Being a mom is exhausting, and yet, when it finally comes to bedtime, a lot of us struggle to drift off. What’s that about? You would think that after running around all day after your kids, come bedtime you’d immediately fall into a deep sleep. For a lot of us moms, sadly that’s not the case. It’s not that we’re not tired enough, it’s just that with so much going on in our heads, drifting off can prove difficult.

A good night's sleep

If there’s one time in your life when you would rather not be sleep deprived, it has to be when you’re raising young kids. There’s nothing worse than having to get up and out of the house for the school run when you’re exhausted. The good news is that getting a better night’s sleep isn’t as hard to achieve as you would think. In most cases of insomnia, the cause is a combination of factors. That’s why taking these five simple steps on board is crucial if you want to achieve a better night’s sleep.

  1. Reduce pre-bedtime screen time

One of the most common reasons that we struggle to get to sleep is because of our electronic devices. If you’re someone who spends all their time in the lead up to bed on a screen of some description, this could be what’s making it hard to drift off. You see, iPhone, Kindle & laptop screens have been proven to keep our minds in an active state. To calm your mind and get it ready to rest you need to relax for at least an hour after using an electronic device. With this in mind, ban screen time before bed – opt to read a book instead, and you should see a difference in how easily you fall asleep.

  1. Get into a routine

When it comes to getting a good night’s sleep, often the problem that causes us to struggle to drift off is the fact we haven’t had time to wind down. If you get into bed with a mind that’s still in active mode, the chances are you’ll struggle to drift off. That’s why implementing a pre-bedtime routine could be a good idea. The great thing about having a bedtime routine is that it helps your mind (and body) to know that it’s time to start winding down. This routine could be made up of a lavender bath – lavender helps the body to relax, and a cup of hot milk. Or half an hour snuggled up reading a book.

  1. Ensure your bed is comfortable

Is your bed as comfortable as it could be? If the answer is no, this could be why you’re not sleeping well. When it comes to how well we sleep, our beds play a crucial part. If you’re sleeping on a mattress that isn’t comfortable, this could be causing your lack of sleep. The best way to deal with this is simple – buy a new mattress. Of course, as mattresses can be expensive, it’s crucial that you take your time choosing a suitable one. The most common dilemma when buying a new mattress is memory foam vs hybrid foam mattresses – which is best? This is a tricky one as everyone has different likes when it comes to mattresses. Your best bet is to take the time to lay on a few mattresses and see which type feels more comfortable to you. Once you find the one, you’ll never have problems sleeping again.

  1. Focus on your bedroom environment

If your room is too hot or too cold, this could make falling asleep more difficult. Or, if your bedroom is too bright at night, this could also make it hard to drift off. Think about your bedroom environment and look out for any factors that could be affecting your sleep. If for example, you notice that your bedroom gets too stuffy at night, before getting into bed open a window. Or, if the room is too bright at night thanks to a road outside or a street lamp, invest in blackout blinds. It’s small changes like these that can make all the difference when it comes to whether or not you get a good night’s sleep.

  1. Practice yoga

Studies have shown that practicing meditational exercise before bed can help to soothe and calm the mind. While aerobic exercise can make drifting off more difficult, meditational exercise helps to calm the mind. While yoga is often seen as being the most relaxing form of exercise, Pilates can be just as soothing. If you’ve never practiced meditational exercise before, you can find plenty of tutorials online. The best site for this is definitely YouTube, as there are so many different ones to choose from.

I hope that you find these tips helpful and can finally get a good night’s sleep. It may take a bit of trial and error but by following this guide, you can work out what’s causing your sleep problems.
