Futureproof Your Family’s Finances

Keeping a roof over your family’s head, making sure they’re fed and have everything they need is an essential job as a parent. So when money is tight, making ends meet can be stressful. Here are some of the ways you can improve your money situation which will benefit you in the here and now, as well as later down the line.

Get out of debt

Being in debt is expensive. Because things like loans, credit cards and store cards all charge significant interest, every month that you carry a balance you’re paying out extra money. One of the best things you can do in terms of your finances is pay off your debts. Sell things you don’t need to raise money, cut back on luxuries for a while and take on some extra shifts at work.

At the very least, consolidate debts with one loan or card which has a smaller interest amount so you’re paying less overall. If you’re in serious trouble with debt then speak to a debt management agency. They can liaise with your creditors and arrange more affordable monthly repayments as well as get interest frozen.

Save money

Once you’re out of debt, your next step to giving yourself a secure financial future is to save money. Have an emergency fund that’s only ever used in true emergencies– this will stop you from falling into debt or getting in a pickle if you’re landed with an unexpected expense. You can always have a separate savings account for things like luxuries that you want to buy- new technology, a new car, a vacation etc. But keep your emergency fund in tact.

Get insured

To prevent getting stung with certain expenses, it can be worth getting insured. Medical, dental, pet and home insurance can all prevent you from being left out of pocket if the worst were to happen. While these will be an extra expense that you will need to work into your monthly budget- however it could save you thousands in the event of an incident. While a good injury lawyer will be able to get you the compensation you’re entitled to if you have an accident, medical insurance will pay out while you’re waiting for the claim. That way you don’t end up in tons of debt and go broke waiting for the claim to pay out as this can take some time.

Establish a side hustle

You can work a job for years and years and feel totally secure, but what happens if one day the company goes into administration? What happens if they’re bought out by someone else and decide to get rid of you as an employee, or you lose your job over unforeseen circumstances? This is a worry for everyone, but one way you can protect yourself is to build up a side hustle. Something that you can do in your spare time (and ideally is fun and enjoyable) but earns you a second income.

Even if it’s not a full time wage, having a second income to fall back onto can be a lifesaver during a difficult time. Start an eBay business, write a blog, or build up your ratings on freelancing site so you can always get some extra work when you want it.

Questions to Ask Yourself Before Making a Big Decision

As you move through life, there are all sorts of big decision which you will need to make. Each choice that you take will then go on to have a ripple effect in influencing other aspects of your life, so you need to make them wisely. At the same time, you don’t want to remain paralysed in indecision, as some of these big choices need to be made quickly. The following set of questions are just a few of the general ones which you can ask yourself as a way of making your mind up about whatever decision is currently troubling you.

Is There a Time Limit on Your Decision?

Some big life choices need to be made quickly, while there are plenty more which you can take your time over a little bit more. So, it is worth working out which category your current dilemma falls under. When you have a deadline, this means that you know how pressing the decision, so you know how much thinking time that you have in front of you. Of course, there are some major life decisions which require you to set your own deadline. For example, you may be weighing up whether or not to change careers. If you don’t set a time limit for yourself, this can end up dragging on indefinitely.

Have You Done the Research?

The internet is the perfect tool that allows you to conduct research in a whole host of different areas. For example, the choice before you could be whether or not to have kids. So, you could start reading about becoming a parent and the pros and cons involved. You could also do some research into practical matters like the financial cost that you will have to bear. And you could also look into the different options out there when it comes to conceiving. Just take a look at ConceiveAbilities as a starting point. Doing the proper amount of research can really help you out when it comes to making the right choice when you are struggling.

Is There Anyone You Can Talk to About Your Choice?

Getting some advice from someone who has already been through your current situation can end up helping you out in a big way. So, consider your social circle to determine whether there is anyone who you think is up for the job of giving you some advice. Don’t rule out people who you don’t know all that well as it can sometimes be easier to talk to them on a deeper level. Otherwise, perhaps there is someone who can help you out in a professional capacity. For example, if you are thinking about starting a business, you could turn to a professional consultant to give you the guidance that you are looking for.

Have You Written Down Your Goals?

Life has a habit of not working out quite as you expected it to, but this doesn’t mean that you can’t think about your goals in the long-term. Try to work out what you want to five, 10 or even 20 years time to determine how your current decision falls in line with this. If nothing else, the simple act of writing things down can help to stop things jumbling around in your head and clarify your thoughts in a positive way.

What Are the Pros and Cons of Your Options?

And while you are writing things down, you can start to analyse each of the different options that you have in front of you. One of the best ways of doing this is with a simple pros and cons list. Obviously, some of these things are going to be hypothetical as you can never be 100 per cent sure how something is going to work out. But once you have all of these advantages and disadvantage in front of you, you may find that one choice is leaping out at you ahead of all the others.

Have You Thought About the Risks of Not Making a Decision?

When you are trying to make a decision, it can be very tempting to do nothing about it at all. But have you considered that this is an option which comes along with its fair share of risks as well? After all, change is an inevitable part of life and if you simply avoid it all the time, you could find that your life is stuck on stand-still rather than moving forward.

Could You Become A Law Enforcement Mom?

If you’re looking for a new career that will help you to give something back to society and make your local community a safer place for the kids; you might think about joining the Police Force and becoming a Law Enforcement Officer. It’s a big step, and the job is not suitable for every mother out there. However, if you’re sick and tired of hearing about crime in your local area, and you want to improve the situation before the next generation matures; the career move could be the best option on the table. With that in mind, let’s take a look at all the benefits.

You will make your community safer

There are lots of excellent jobs available for working moms. However, the most important benefit of becoming a Police Officer is that you will help to make your local community safer for every family. Kids will be able to play outside without their parents getting worried if they know you are around. Also, you can help to catch some of the criminals who have plagued your society for years. You might even encourage other local mothers to walk the same path, and so you could completely revolutionize the way in which policing happens in your hometown. If you don’t consider becoming a Police Officer for any other reason; that should help to convince you.

You will become an excellent role model

All mothers should want to set a positive example for their children. The last thing you want is for your little ones to grow up and join a gang or something similar. They would put their lives at risk alongside the lives of many others. If the children see you as a Police Officer all their lives; there is a chance some of your career goals will rub off on them. Who knows? Maybe your kids will end up signing up for the Police Force too? Perhaps they will go a step further and get a degree in criminology? More about that in the next section!

You can continue to educate yourself

While working for the Police Force will bring many benefits and opportunities; it is vital that you don’t overlook the fact that you can often continue education. There are lots of specialist colleges and online learning companies that provide education for Police Officers. So, you could contact them at any time and pay for some classes in the hope of gaining new qualifications and progressing within your career. You might even convince the Police Force to pay the bill.

As you can see from the information on this page, there are lots of advantages to becoming a Police Officer in your local community. It is something more mothers should consider because females tend to take a more compassionate and rational approach to criminals. For that reason, you might manage to lower the number of incidents in which Law Enforcement gets into conflicts with young people in your town. Sometimes all those kids need is a stern talking-to and a lift home to their parents. You will take a less heavy-handed approach, and that should benefit everyone.

6 Jobs And Careers Perfect For Working Moms

Choosing to be a working mom is far from an easy decision, but most would agree that the benefits far outweigh the difficulties. After all, despite wanting to spend as much time with your little one as you can, you know that the occasional break is vital for your sanity. Plus, children are expensive, so the extra income will really come in handy. To make this process easier, you need to choose the perfect job, so here are six options for you to consider.

Sales Assistant

Every parent needs to get away for a little while, and working as a sales assistant could be the perfect way for you to do this. Unfortunately, the pay isn’t the best, but the few hours away from home will be absolutely priceless and most stores do offer a small staff discount. This is also a relatively flexible option that you could easily fit around your home life and regular schedule.

Small Business Owner

Whether you know it or not, everyone has a talent that they can make money from. For you, it could be your artistic side, your fondness for baking, or even your passion for writing and blogging. Starting a small business isn’t always easy, but, if you’re willing to work hard, then it is something that you can do from home. As you set your own hours, it’s also incredibly flexible.

School Teacher

If you’re like most parents and hate heading off to work when you’re children are at home, then consider becoming a teacher. This way, you’ll have roughly the same hours as your kids and will also get the school holidays off. Unfortunately, you will need a teaching qualification and may have to complete further education, like a masters in reading, but the work will all be worth it.

Ridesharing Driver

When you spend a lot of your time driving your kids, friends, and family around, you can start to feel like a personal chauffeur. That being said, you don’t have the paycheck to match. If you did want this, however, you could sign up to a ridesharing site, like Lyft or Uber. This way, you can choose your hours and journeys and can drive paying customers around whenever you want to.

Real Estate Agent

More often than not, real estate agents set their own schedules, but generally, they do have to be available on evenings and weekends. This is perfect if your partner works a nine to five job, as it would mean that you don’t have to leave your kids with a sitter. Although this career does require qualifications and certifications, it offers competitive pay and can fit around your home life.

Makeup Artist

Beauty will probably never disappear, which means that there will always be a demand for makeup artists and hairdressers. Depending on your wants and needs, you could complete either of these jobs from a salon or your home. You can also set your own hours and choose to specialize in weddings and other formal events, which would provide you with even more freedom.

Being a working mom can be a challenge, but choosing any one of these jobs or careers could make it a lot easier for you.

If you’re still questioning whether you need a shed in your garden, there are many perks to building or buying one. This article will discuss some of the main benefits of garden sheds so you can decide whether you will utilize one fully. However, if you are feeling pushed for space and you need extra workshop or storage room, the shed can be extremely handy.

WHAT IS A GARDEN SHED?

A shed is classed as an outbuilding that usually goes in the back garden. It can be used for storage, undertaking hobbies, converted into a playhouse, made into a workshop and much more.

THE BENEFITS OF A GARDEN SHED

With so many uses and coming in so many designs, garden sheds offer numerous benefits. Some of the main ones are:

  • Increased storage for your home– can be perfect when you are running out of space in your attic and garage.
  • Potential play area for kids– the shed can be converted into a playhouse further down the line for bigger families.
  • Great workspace– for those activities such as painting, building and other crafty things, you often need more space. The shed is a perfect place to set up shop and start working on these things.

KNOWING WHICH TYPE OF SHED YOU NEED FOR YOUR GARDEN

There are plenty of shapes, sizes and materials that sheds can be purchased in. This makes your job harder if you don’t know what you are looking for. Here are the most common shed types you will find in the home stores:

  • Wooden sheds
  • Metal sheds
  • Plastic sheds

Each of these come with their own set of positives and negatives. Let’s look through them briefly –

Metal Sheds

They are great for the long term as they are sturdy and durable. This means if you have costly tools and equipment, a metal shed will do you well. However, if you don’t maintain them properly, they can get rotten due to weather conditions and become less aesthetically pleasing.

Wooden Sheds

These are by far the most common and come in a range of contemporary or traditional designs. They provide flexibility as the user can often add shelving units easily but they do need treating regularly compared to other types of sheds.

Plastic Sheds

Being the cheapest option, you would think they aren’t highly durable. However, they do offer good resistance against the rain and adverse weather conditions, so they manage to avoid rusting. If you are storing valuable items however, they won’t be as secure as their counterparts.

Now we have looked into the world of garden sheds, you should gain more clarity and confidence into what you will buy.

Consider Your Family Abode

Maybe the whole idea of a better and bigger income is so that you and your family can move into a new home within the next five years or so. If your plans are focused on getting yourself further up the property ladder; it might be worth putting your effort and investment into the house you’re currently all living in.

A family home can always be improved to make it a more appealing option to buyers, and more importantly; increase its value. Therefore, look into ways that you can up the value of your house so that when you do come to sell it; you’ll have more money to utilise for your next property. Extra bedrooms, open plan living areas, and an added bathroom, can all help increase the value and appeal of a family home.

You may need to consider you financial options in regards to fixing various parts of your home, updating areas, and improving it as a whole; learning more about this topic will help you to discover your options regarding your income, and planning will become more straightforward.

You can always use professional services like accountants, architects, and financial advisors, to ensure that you’re on the right footing to achieve what you want and need from your property. Keeping an eye on the market will also be crucial to your investment journey; therefore, utilise your coffee breaks, or time in the evenings when the kids are asleep, to open that laptop, and have a look through what’s out there, and what things will cost.

The more you educate yourself on what other families are doing with their home, and the current prices and cost of things, the better you’ll be armed for success with your property journey.

Find The Fun In Flipping A Property

If you’re planning to buy, renovate, and sell a home efficiently; it’s always best to pick somewhere you can visit with ease and be onsite throughout the building process. You can buy your first house or apartment to flip in a variety of ways; however, old and rundown homes in need of TLC can often be found in auctions. It’s worth visiting a few property auctions (take the kids along, they’ll love it) before you go to bid for yourself.

You’ll get to understand the process and get a clear idea of the current market and if it’s a good time to buy. Don’t get caught up in buying something just because you want it; you must set yourself a strict budget and never go over what you’ve worked out the house is worth. Your sole focus is to make money on what you buy, so a bidding war will never work out well.

Much like a rental property; you’ll want to keep an eye on developing and expanding areas around popular cities and suburbs. These places may not be the most desirable locations now, but if young couples and families are already starting to populate the area because of affordable housing, and there seem to be plans for further development;

you need to strike while the iron is hot. Once you’ve secured your doer-upper; it’s time to start the process of making it a desirable and habitable abode. If you, your partner, or family and close friends have any skills that will help to renovate and decorate a home; you could save thousands in building and renovation costs, so utilize them wherever you can.

Utilizing A Vacation Home

One of the best things about looking at vacation homes to rent out, is that you can invest in somewhere that you could potentially visit. If you keep returning to a particular part of the country or world and understand the amenities for families like yourself; you’ll have excellent insider knowledge and an idea of how well the property will rent out during different seasons.

Depending on how you plan to rent your investment out; you can pop along as a family each year and have somewhere to stay free of charge. Not having to pay for expensive hotels and accommodation during in peak periods, will start to add up over the years, so you’ll be making your money back in more ways than one.

If you’re choosing to purchase a property that you’ve researched, but never visited; it’s always worth taking a trip to see where you feel the best areas are that will suit your chosen market and potential renters. You’ll have the advantage of looking through a family renters eyes, along with putting on your landlord hat.

Overseas property investment can sometimes be more challenging, but if you choose the right location; you could get a huge return on your investment in the future. As long as you’re doing all you can to work with a team or company based in the location you wish to buy, and don’t make any impulse or risky moves with your money; there’s no reason it couldn’t be the beginning of a lucrative real estate journey.

4 Distracted Driving Habits You Might Be Teaching Your Teen

When your teens reach driving age, it can be a bittersweet experience for you as a parent. You might feel pride at them reaching this stage of burgeoning independence but be fearful of what could happen to them as they venture out onto the road. Accidents can happen for many reasons, but one of the most common is distracted driving, which caused over 3,000 deaths in 2016, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. If you are teaching your teens the rules of the road, there are a few distracted driving habits you may want to curb in yourself first.

  1. Eating and Drinking in the Car

If you make a habit of stopping for drive-thru food or coffee at your favorite cafe;, you may want to think about how this might affect your teens, who may observe your driving behavior without commenting on it. Do you pull over before putting your change or credit card away? Do you pull out into traffic with one hand on the wheel and the other holding a cup full of hot coffee? If so, you can change your habits to set a better example.

When you stop to get food, have your wallet ready so you can tuck away your change before you pull away or have a designated spot to set it, such as a cup holder in your console, until you get home. Sip your coffee at long stop lights and avoid eating anything until you get home so your attention remains on the road.

  1. Adjusting the Radio or Bluetooth Connections in Traffic

If you enjoy listening to music while you drive, you may station or song hop in traffic. However, even hands-free controls and pull your attention from traffic, which might increase the chances of you rear-ending someone. This kind of crash can cause a variety of injuriesand you will likely be the responsible party, as you failed to retain control of your vehicle. If you must change the station or a streaming playlist ends, ask your passenger to choose another.

  1. Texting at Stoplights or in Slow-Moving Traffic

How many times have you caught yourself glancing at emails and texts while you are sitting at a stoplight or moving through a slow line of traffic? This is a common distracted habit that many people find acceptable because they are stopped or traveling at a low rate of speed. However, it can be just as dangerous and a bad habit to teach your observant teens.

You can cure yourself of this habit by using an app that restricts cell phone use when your car is in motion. These apps can send automated messages to those who text you and let them know you are driving. Some can auto-reply to phone calls as well. These apps may help you break the automatic urge to respond to texts and emails when alerts come in. You may want to ask your local insurance agentsfor advice about how to find these apps or if using them might earn you a small discount on your premiums.

  1. Road Rage

Job stress, being late for an appointment, or a lack of sleep can give you the urge to shout at other drivers or engage in rude driving behavior. This can affect how your teen behaves once they are behind the wheel, so trying to be a courteous and patient driver might help them develop their own good habits. If you are feeling tired or stressed, ask your spouse to drive or rest beforehand if you know you have a driving errand to run.

The driving lessons you teach your teen now can last a lifetime. Realizing and ending your own distracted driving habits might help them understand the importance of remaining focused when they head out on the road.

Back to School Bedtime Routine

After several weeks of summer fun and late nights, year-round school begins, again. For us, this means a new school year routine, as well as back to school bedtime routine.

Typically, to wind down at bedtime, we use a Himalayan salt lamp and spiritual meditations from YouTube on my phone with my favorite one being Crystals Healing: Healing Music For the Soul.

However, the meditation sounds ends after an hour or so, and moves on to something else, and/or drains my battery throughout the night.

AuCuTee Noise Machine for Sleep

This school year, however, I’m incorporating the AuCuTee White Noise Machinefor Sleep. This small, flat device helps to mask external noise so that we are able to get a good night’s sleep without having to drain my phone battery or moving to a different music that is not so soothing.

This noise machine for sleep plays 20 soothing sounds with a memory function and has a headphone hookup. In addition, it has the ability to play for sounds for more than 10 hours, and is rechargeable using a USB. It is ideal for everyone in the entire household.

Final Thoughts

While we are using this noise machine for our new bedtime routine, I’m excited to have it because it’s portable and easy to pack on our travel adventures or when the boys spend the nights at Grandma’s.

Cheers to back to school routines!

Stay at Home Moms Need Help Too

Being a mom is one of life’s greatest gifts, I am blessed enough to be a mom to four beautiful children. Nine years ago, I decided to be a stay at home mom. It’s been eventful to say the least. I have continued to learn and grow, not only as a mother but as a woman. However, this job comes with many downsides as well.

For one, my husband works long crazy hours, especially since we’re on one income.  That means I go more than eight hours a day with very little adult interaction. I love my kids and spending time with them but this job as a stay at home mom can be quite lonely.

After having my fourth baby, I struggled with postpartum depression and it was very difficult. I needed to overcome many obstacles on my own. I learned that it’s important to interact with other adults and make time for yourself. After all, stay at home moms need help too.

Here are some simple tips that help me daily to get through my emotions.

Write it out

HappinessIshomemade.net

In one of my previous posts I talked briefly about Bullet journaling.  This has been a Godsend for me. Not only does it help me organize my day, but I am also able to write out my feelings. You can include anything in your journal, personalize it for your specific needs.  I have found that this is a great way to gather your thoughts, plan, and keep goals.  You can find many supplies at your local Target, Walmart or amazon.

Take a walk or exercise

This is something we should ALL do! I mean how wonderful does it feel to be outside with the fresh air and birds chirping? It’s amazing! This gives you an opportunity to reflect and really focus on what you want and gather your thoughts.  Exercise helps you physically and you start to feel better with a little sunshine.  Find a walking buddy and get moving!

Ask for help

As mothers, we are proud individuals.  We try to do it all ourselves.  Well guess what ladies? It doesn’t have to be that way.  Put your pride to the side and reach out to someone you trust for help.  We all need breaks every now and again, you’re not a terrible mother for asking no matter what your husband says-HA.  We need to focus on us first.  I know it’s the hardest thing and I too struggle with this. But if your struggling I recommend asking for a helping hand.  Remember it takes a village to raise a family.

Time for yourself

I know…What is this, right? If you’re like me you’re used to having little ones follow you around every second of the day. But every once and a while you should treat yourself.  Go get a mani/pedi while the kiddos are at school, or do a mud mask at home when they are asleep.  Sometimes a little pampering can go a long way and set your mood for the week to come.

When to talk to someone

If you’re having serious thoughts of loneliness or have signs of depression you should talk to someone right away.  Don’t be ashamed of these feelings, it happens and it’s best to get help as soon as possible.  Today there are so many ways to reach out, whether you go online or into your doctor’s office.  It’s best not to let it go and get out there and talk it out with someone who can help you.

The most important thing to remember is that whatever you’re feeling you’re not alone. At one point or another, we have all been there. Being mentally healthy is crucial when you’re a mom because your alone most of or all day and it can be very draining on your emotions.

These little people are awesome and you love them but they can be a handful. It’s OK to admit that to yourself and talk or get the help you need before doing something you may regret one day. There are so many options.

They grow up so fast and our time with them is short. Try and enjoy it by being the best you. Reach out when you need help when you need it.

Thanks for stopping by mommies, and remember to keep striving for mommy success.
