The importance of Counseling for the Stay-at-Home-Mom

I chose to become a Stay-at-home mom in 2009 when my first son was born.  for nine years, this has been my life. Although I am confident in my decision to be a SAHM- But it comes with many challenges.  It’s a never-ending job where I wear many hats and hold many titles, but my favorite one of all is being Mom to these four wonderful kids.

 

It goes without saying that I love what I do. What many forget is that being home is IN FACT a JOB.  You work hard as a mom, with many rewards also come challenges.  Being at home all day with littles is not only physically exhausting but also mentally.  You face many emotions daily, with loneliness being at the top of the list.

 

You become so consumed with your children and day to day life that you forget to do things for you. You also have a hard time holding onto friendships you once had before children.  This loneliness can lead to depression.  It’s very important to take care of your mental health and get help immediately.

 

Here are some tips that have helped me, especially recently with the birth of my fourth child.  It’s not an easy journey and there are many tools out there to help us moms.

 

Counseling

 

Counseling   is a great way to talk about your feelings. With all of the modern technology of today there are so many ways to get help.  It gives you have a chance to open-up in a different way than you can with family or friends. I started talking to a counselor after being diagnosed with PPD, and it has helped me tremendously.  I have found that I am not alone and that many women like me suffer from PPD and the loneliness that comes with being a stay at home mom.

 

Support Groups

 

Support groups are AMAZING! I belong to two different groups- one for special needs parents, and the other is parenting.  It’s a great way to talk to other moms who understand EXACTLY what you’re going through. Each group is different and some provide child care which is very helpful and encourages you to go back every week.  There are also some great online support groups through social media platforms where you can ask questions and get answers right away.  This is a good way to meet new moms and share stories and advice.

 

 

Make Friends

It’s important to make friends when you can.  I recently connected with some of the moms from my children’s PTA at school and it’s a wonderful relationship. They understand what it’s like to be a mom of more than one child, and the challenges I face.  I can be myself with them and reach out for help when I need it.

 

Try not to be so hard on yourself.  This unconditional love we call motherhood is not always a walk in the park and butterflies and rainbows.  It comes with many battles in between.  Try to enjoy the moment as much as you can and get help if you need it.  If you have any questions or comments feel free to reach out.

 

 

Are You Giving Your Garden The Use It Deserves?

No one can deny that having an outside space is a blessing. The chance to get out on a hot day is the best thing of all, especially when you have kids in the house. That garden space can play host to some amazing learning benefits for your children and some fantastic family days.

But, a shocking amount of us with this benefit fail to use the space half as much as we should. When you don’t have the option of sitting outside, it may well be all you think about. But, when the lawn is there, and your life goes on, it’s not unusual to go months without setting foot outside. After all, you have so many other things to do, and there’s no pressing reason for you to head out there.

If this sounds all too familiar, it might be time to consider a few of the ways you can turn your yard into a valued space. After all, the addition of a garden will have affected your house price. And, given that you’ve paid for it, it seems only right to use it. Admittedly, a blank lawn isn’t the most inspiring. After sitting out there for five minutes, you’re sure to get bored. But, there are plenty of ways to inject fun, and thus inspire yourself to get outside more. Read on to find out about a few of them.

Many of us are reluctant to put patios in our gardens. After all, greenery looks best, and you might worry about ruining the view from your windows with this. But, if you aren’t using that greenery, is it really worth getting precious about? Of course, we’re not saying that you need to pave the whole garden. But, a small patio space backing away from your house could make a huge difference. Here, you can place anything from sofas to tables. You could even invest in a barbecue and keep it safe on that paved space. These may seem like small additions, but you would be amazed how much difference they can make. With these in place, you’ll even be able to eat outside on beautiful days. And, just sitting out for an hour or so each day is a whole lot better than keeping that back door closed all the time. You’ll also find you’re more liable to sit out with a drink or have conversations with friends at your patio table. Just like that, your garden will get the use it deserves.

Turn to animals

As already mentioned, having an outside space when you’ve got kids is fantastic for education. Through exploration, they can learn about everything from plants to wildlife. And, that’s all essential stuff. Only, your blank lawn is hardly an educational oasis right now. Your children are unlikely to learn anything more than the fact you don’t cut the grass enough. But, to rectify that, you could always turn to animals here. For one, transforming your yard into a haven for wildlife could work wonders here. That way, your kids will get first-hand knowledge of native animals. And, when there are animals to see, you may find yourself much more inspired to head outside. You could go as far with this as you want. It may be that you invest in bird feeders. Even just heading out to keep them topped up is better than not using the garden at all. Or, you might want to go all out with hidey holes, bird boxes, and flowerbeds to encourage insects. Suddenly, there’ll be a whole load to look at in your otherwise dull outside space. You could even take this further by buying animals like chickens, which will give you a pressing reason to head out. Collecting those eggs each day could be the ideal chance to breathe in a little of that fresh air!

 

 

 

Grow a vegetable patch

When it comes to reasons to get outside, few things are better than a garden vegetable patch. As well as working wonders for family health, your path will need daily care and checks to ensure that all is well. So, you’ll really have no choice but to get outside every single day. And, once you’re out there, you may find that you’d like to stay a little longer, or perhaps fiddle with some new seeds. You could get the kids on board here, too, by buying them something like these garden gift ideas, and letting them get stuck in themselves. If all goes well, you might even catch that gardening bug. And, before you know it, the whole family will spend more time outside than they do in the house. We’d say that’s a pretty fair exchange.

If you’re willing, it’s also worth considering a swimming pool somewhere on your lawn. Again, this does bring the risk of ruining that greenery a little. But, a well designed pool could enhance rather than destroy your yard. And, once this is in place, it could be the ideal kick to get you into regular outside use. You certainly won’t have any trouble getting the kids outside with this baby on board. You, too, are more liable to make a daily effort to get swimming once you’ve spent this money. You could even go all out with garden parties. Pair this with a patio, and you could have barbecue swimming pool parties the whole summer long. Your garden might even get so much use after this that you forget it was ever neglected in the first place!

Taking time to get outside isn’t easy. If we’re honest; the majority of us would admit to neglecting our yards far more often than we should. So, don’t be afraid to give yourself a little motivation to get out. Even if you’ve never considered these options, they have the power to transform your backyard. Shears

 

Shears will come in useful in many different ways in your garden. You can use them to quickly trim grass around the bottom of any trees, bushes, and shrubs. Therapy and PPD: My Journey through Postpartum Depression

 

Postpartum Depression is Real

Postpartum depression is a condition that affects more than three million women in the United States alone.  Many of us, do not recognize the symptoms or shake off as “nothing” or “not a big deal”.  As a mother of four, my pregnancies have been different each time.  Thankfully I’ve had awesome pregnancies and natural deliveries, but postpartum is tough.

Adjusting to having a new baby at home, balancing my older kids’ routines, and making time for myself is very challenging.  This time around, PPD hit me in a way I never expected, here is my experience and few tips I’d like to share with all of you.

 

My Story

My daughter was born in February of this year, she’s my fourth and final baby. She is amazing, healthy and the perfect addition to our family.  Initially after her birth I was exhausted like any new mom, I felt all the pains, getting used to having a newborn again and the breastfeeding routines.

I struggled with the thought of coming home to my kids. It scared me, I wanted to stay in the hospital longer and have more time to really bond with my baby girl.  I knew real life was about to set in and I wasn’t ready for it.  An overwhelming feeling took over my emotions.

Once I returned home, my kids were so happy to see me and meet their new sister, although I was in a house full of people I felt so alone. I felt sad and incomplete and couldn’t explain why.  I would just sit and cry.  Not only was I exhausted, but my routine kicked in the following week.  I was expected to cook, clean and dive right in to normalcy. It was harder than I anticipated.

Didn’t I deserve more time? I just gave birth, wasn’t I allowed a little more time to heal. But as mothers, we get right into it, because, well that’s life and it has to be done.  Being my fourth, I already knew how to take care of a baby, and ideally what to what to expect—but it’s never what you expect! You can’t predict the baby’s reaction after birth, every baby is different and so are you.

 

We’re invincible until we realize we’re not.

I felt talking about my kids in any negative way, or complaining about being pregnant or the birth, was selfish.  What good will complaining do, I knew what was going to happen with four kids,  I am thankful for each of my children  I was not looking for someone to feel sorry for me, but I hoped for a little compassion.

With four kids I don’t expect a lot of help, and asking  is not my strong suite. I felt guilty for needing help, I wanted to do it all, but part of the problem with that is  we all need it every now and then.  We need to accept that parenthood is hard! There are many challenges and like the saying goes, “It takes a village to raise a family”,and it’s so true!  We don’t realize how hard it is and that being a mother is never ending. Accepting the fact you are not almighty and taking or asking for help is perfectly fine.

If you are like me and do not have many options for help, I feel your pain. Everyone in my immediate life works and has their own lives.  Ultimately, I needed to sulk it up and figure things out for my kids and family.  But while doing that I didn’t know I was hurting myself in the process.

 

I didn’t realize I had a problem

I am always so busy that I didn’t recognize I had PPD until I  my six-week postpartum appointment. They handed me a questionnaire, which asked some difficult questions. Some were hard to answer, and others I couldn’t relate to, all the while I had no idea I felt these things. After filling in my answers I bursted into tears.  I had so many questions;

How could I possibly be sad when I am so filled with joy?

I love my baby and kids, what’s wrong with me?

What am I complaining about?

I am lucky to have children, why am I being so selfish?

I felt guilt and shame because I am so blessed and there was no reason to feel this way. Looking back to that day, I see now I shouldn’t feel that way. This happens to all of us, after taking to my doctor I needed help, and I wasn’t alone.

 

Seeking Help

My Doctor referred to a therapist. I didn’t know how to react to talking with a complete stranger regarding my feelings.  The thought of telling my husband was overwhelming.  Being strong for my family is important for me, I am a fighter and for the first time I felt I lost the battle.

Despite my reservations with therapy, deep down I knew this was the right thing to do.  I met with the therapist -who is wonderful by the way, I began to open up like a flower in bloom.  Taking about everything from my kids, my son’s autism diagnosis, relationships and lack of of relationships and friendships, my constant feelings of loneliness and so much more.

It’s been a few weeks, and while I may not be cured, I’m feeling stronger every day.   Talking with someone has been the best thing that has ever happened to me.  I know that it’s going to take time, but I am willing to put in the work to get back to my happy place.

 

Support System

One of my biggest fears was telling my husband about my PPD. Not because I was afraid he wasn’t going to support me, but because of my role in the family. I am a full time stay-at-home-mom, my husband works a lot of long hours.  It’s my responsibility to take care of the home, think of me as the executive Vice President of my home.

I run everything from budget to groceries.   If fell apart the whole house would come crumbling down with me.

I wanted him to believe that I am superwoman and can handle it all while he works.  But I also accepted we are a team and can conquer anything together. So I told him all about it, and his reaction was wonderful yet unexpected,  It was a simple response, “Let’s fix it”.  He was was right.

He understands I can’t do everything and he’s been doing little things that are a big help.  He takes the kids to school or picks them up, takes them for a few hours on his days off so I can rest and spend time with the baby.  He’s been encouraging me to write my feelings in a journal.  I explained to him that these things go a long way and if I am well rested and feeling good, the house will run smoothly.

My advice is to talk to your spouse and let them know what’s going on.  Take some time when they come home for work to talk about your day, and communicate.  This is so important, because having that support system is crucial for your recovery.

 

You’re not Alone

Little by little, day by day you start to feel human again.  It takes 9 long months to make a baby, why do we rush ourselves to bounce back after two weeks of giving birth? We need to acknowledge the symptoms and talk to our doctors for support.  Women are amazing beings, but we’re not invincible it’s OK to ask for help.  Ultimately remember you’re not alone, many women are going through the same thing.  Stay strong, and take things one day at time.

Choosing a Dog For a Family with Children

There can be many reasons to get a pet for the family home. It can be as a companion for you or one of your children, including seeing more and more service dogs that help members of the family. It could be simply because you love animals and want one around the home, or because you want to teach your children some responsibility and help them to be accountable and patient. Regardless of the reason, you still need to make sure that you’re getting a pet that will be a good fit for the family.

 

Not all dogs are created equal, and there are many different varieties and breeds. As you might imagine, they all come with unique and distinct personalities and traits. And naturally, some will be better suited to be around families, particularly little children, than others. Most dogs will have a sense of loyalty to you as you have them in the home and raise them. But some will cope better with the strains and busyness of family life.

Temperament

 

This is all about the personality of the dog. And for a dog that is going to be around children, a playful but calm personality is good, as well as one that is agreeable. A dog that is quite snappy or impulsive can be a negative thing around children. When a dog is calmer it will be easier for it to make good relationships with your children, as it will be more aware and take time to get to know them.

 

Size

 

The size of the dog that you choose for a family pet can be all relative. You might want a particular size, for example, one that doesn’t grow too much as you only live in an apartment, for example. Size can also be a slight indicator of how they will behave too. While a smaller dog will eat less and take up less space, it could be giddy and excitable than others. Larger dogs could be more docile, though they will take up more space, need more exercise, and eat more. So you have to think about what is best for you and your situation.

 

Energy Level

 

The energy level of your dog, as has been mentioned slightly, can be a personal preference. You might want a dog that can go running with you each morning and keep up with your active lifestyle. If you have small children than a dog that doesn’t need to be walked too far could fit better as toddler legs never want to walk too far. Again, think about your situation and circumstances and what will fit in best.

Pug

 

Pugs do love kids. Though they are small, Pugs are not delicate like some small dog breeds, so it is a good choice for families with children. However, if you have children who want an active pet to retrieve balls or play soccer with, they could be a little bit disappointed with a Pug. All in all, they are a small breed that stays small, and they are fairly docile and chilled, especially for a smaller breed dog.

 

Bulldog

 

If you want a loyal, devoted, and patient pup, then a Bulldog is the one for your family. That being said, they are a pretty docile dog, and they will get on well with other pets if you already have some in the home. Beagle

 

Beagles have a small size and a pretty calm temperament, making them a good choice for families. They will work well for your family if your kids love the outdoors, as they really do love to explore outside and follow trails. This could be due to the fact that they were originally kept as hunting dogs. They have a lot of energy and like to play games, so again, good for active families. All in all they are smart, happy, and friendly breed that gets along well with other pets and animals.

 

Collie

 

There are a few different breeds within the ‘Collie’ breed, such Border Collie and Bearded Collie. Though you may know the classic ‘Lassie’ dog is a border collie and does make a great family per. They are a gentle and predictable breed, in that they rarely misbehave and you’ll find that they are simple to train and obey commands well. If you’ve never had a dog before, then that can make it a good option for you. They are pretty protective too, which makes them a great addition for families with children, as well as companions for older people.

 

There are some other great breeds for families too, such as Poodles and Golden Labradors. Even Bull Terriers can be good for families, as they have been unfairly branded with an aggressive label. The pet you choose will just depend on those three things mentioned above, as to what breed is going to work best for you and your family.
