Transform Your Garden into a Haven for Wildlife

Instead of simply transforming your garden so that it looks great and gives you the perfect place to sit and enjoy the outdoors when the weather is good, why not transform it so that its a great place for nature too?

No matter how good your garden looks, it can always be enhanced by the beauty of birds, bees and other cute critters and the kids will get so much more out of the garden when they can watch nature and learn about the world around them.

Sound good? Here are a few things you can do to transform your garden into a haven for wildlife:

Plant a Mini Wildflower Meadow

One of the best things you can do if you want your garden to look beautiful and attract wildlife is to plant a mini flower meadow. It will brighten up your garden with a veritable cornucopia of beautiful, delicate colors and it will have the birds, bees, caterpillars, frogs, and butterflies, amongst others, flocking to them for your enjoyment.

Install Bird Boxes, Bird Feeders, and a Bird Bath

If you’re particularly fond of our feathered friends, then the simplest way to encourage then to come on over and brighten up the garden is by putting out a range of bird food in feeders and by buying or making your own bird boxes where they can make their home, as well as checking out the best bird bath fountains and adding one to your lawn. These will cover the basics of food, water, and shelter that the birds need to thrive and they will love your garden for providing it. If you want to get the kids more involved in nature,  put up cameras that they can watch on their tablets too. They’ll love the birds’ antics.

Leave Lots of Foliage

If you want wildlife to feel safe in your garden, it’s a good idea to have lots of dense foliage that they can hide behind/under as well as hedges that they can disappear into. Ideally, this should be located near to sources of food such as seeds, berries, nuts, and cones, so when you’re working out where to plant what, bear in mind the proximity of food to shelter.

Variety

Speaking of planting it’s important that you provide a variety of different plants and food sources as possible if you want to attract as many different animals as possible. Not only that, but you should choose native species where possible because they are what native wildlife will prefer, and you should aim to have a range of plants that are growing in each season so that there is always food and shelter available.

Install a Pond

All animals from birds to woodchuck need access to fresh water, so if you install a pond or pool in the yard, you can pretty much guarantee that you’ll get many more visitors than you usually would. You’ll have so much fun watching them in the water!

If you can provide all of the above and you can do so in abundance, then not only will your garden look pretty good, but you will have a regular influx of wildlife to enjoy watching too!

How Ready Are Your Children For University?

If you already know with confidence that your children will absolutely be attending university, then you will probably be doing everything you can to prepare them for that time in their life. But knowing how to do this is another matter altogether, and something which will often take a lot of patience and effort on your part. Nonetheless, there are certain things you can do if you want to make sure that your children are going to be as ready as possible for their university years, and it’s worth considering some or all of these as soon as you can. If you do, you will be giving your children a much better chance of success with their further education.

Start The Learning Early

One of the best things you could do for your child is to help them begin their further education early. As well as joining a university, it is also perfectly possible for them to gain some knowledge in other ways first so as to improve their chances of doing well. One of the best ways to do that is to find a online course through an institution such as the St. Bonaventure University where they can begin their learning in a part-time manner, so as to get a head start with whatever they are going to be studying. You can either encourage them to study something from within their field of discipline, or something separate which will supplement it nicely. Either way, it could be the perfect head start your child deserves.

Get Them Reading

Even if you still want to allow them to have a full summer break without official learning, you might still want to think about getting them reading to some extent so that they can start to flex their critical muscle. This alone could be all that they really need to get off to a great start, and you might want to think about putting together a good reading list with them which they can then begin to work their way through. This is a great way to get them ready for university, and it’s one which the majority of children will take on board pretty easily and quickly. Make sure that they also find one or two things to enjoy for the sake of it, so that they don’t get bored with the process during the summer months.

The Emotional Side

As well as the educational side of things, it is also important to remember that there is an emotional aspect to university, and the better you prepare them for this the more likely it is that they will be able to make the most of their time there. The best way to do this is to simply be there for them in the way you normally would as a parent; you will probably find that that is enough to keep them happy and relatively worry-free. The emotional side of things is the most important in many ways, so that is worth remembering if you want to really prepare your child as best as possible.

4 Methods To Become A More Attentive Mother

Pexels

Staying attentive is one of the golden goals of most mothers, but one of the hardest to achieve. After all, there are many, many things trying to steal your attention over the course of a day. Staying strong and only focusing on that which matters could be considered one of the most important things to do, but one that takes the most practice. There is almost no caring mother who doesn’t find herself busy, busy, busy on a daily basis, and so ensuring that you’re able to stay as attentive as possible could be considered one of your first and foremost important priorities to achieve against this.

There are many ways to do this. We have compiled a list of four very important methods, and you can add more at your leisure. However, mastering these four will stand you in wonderful stead, and surely add even more competency to how wonderful you already are as a mother.

Watch

To be more observant, you of course need to watch your child. There are many things that can present itself to you if you place your effort here. For example, how well is your child socializing? Could it be that their unwillingness to listen is simply because they are nervous, a very young child, the other child has been too aggressive, or that a physical ear health issue might be preventing them from hearing the other child at all? Never be sure to jump to conclusions, but certainly be aware of the issues and symptoms that might occur as a result of this happening. Watching your child in a range of solo and group play scenarios can help here, as well as observing how they react to small things, such as certain foods or bathtime. This can certainly help you understand if things are fine, or if you need to take further action.

Regular Checkups

It’s law for you to have your child attend checkups regularly, but sometimes even more of this can be worthwhile. For example, ensuring your child is brought to the opticians to gauge eye health and the necessity for glasses is important. If your child reacts badly to certain foods you might have found an allergy, and this will need some careful planning to factor around. You will only know if any of these issues will matter if you speak to the professionals, but you can also refer to approved books with educational and referral based informational perspectives.

Talking

Sometimes, your child will try to express to you issues they are facing. This might be in broken speech as they learn to talk, or through physical expression. It could be a simple recurring issue they bring up. Talking to your child in whatever way you can will often lend you more insight into how they feel than many other circumstances. Sometimes, not expressing can be as powerful as talking. If they are routinely quiet as a stone before entering their swimming class for example, they might be feeling intense fear and will need some gentle encouragement to help them through. Communicating with your child is the most important thing you can do, and as a mother you will have likely defined your own particular way of doing so.

Dividing

Many families have more than one child. This is a wonderful thing. However, when your new and gorgeous baby enters the family, it can be difficult for the current child to cope with the lack of attention. This is not because they are greedy or narcissistic as a child, but they simply have certain requirements for maternal and paternal care that must be taken into account if they are to develop well. If you can, dividing your attention between them both equally is something that must be striven for every day. While of course this will never be a stock 50/50 line that you will draw each day, aiming for that can help you avoid allowing a child to feel left out, even if that belief is less rational than they consider it to be.

This can be achieved by keeping tight control over your schedule, and ensuring that personal one on one time is always factored in with the new child. You might take them to the cinema while the father stays home with the baby, or generally play silly games with them throughout the course of the day. Anything you can do to give personal attention, particularly after they return home from school, can simply and gently show them that they will always be sustained and loved, despite the requirements of the new baby.

With these tips, you can be sure that you’ll develop into a much more attentive mother, or stay the currently fantastic one you are.

Common Tax Questions For New Mommies

Being a parent comes with so many wonderful rewards from the simple pleasure of watching your baby grow and develop, to meeting the wonderful community of like minded and supportive Moms who you never realized were on your doorstep. But among the many and varied gratifications, there’s a whole lot to learn. Some of it comes quite naturally, while a lot of it comes with months and months of repetition and persistence. With the often frantic life of a new Mom as busy as it is, it’s unlikely that you’ve given much thought to the tax implications of your little one, but as April 15th draws near, we thought this might be a pertinent time to address some of the questions you may have filing for your first year with an adorable little dependent. All Moms need to box clever with their finances and getting their tax affairs in order is a great start…

Can I claim my new baby on last year’s taxes?

This depends on how old your little one is. If he or she was born on December 2017 or any day before that then the good news is that they are classed as a dependent for the entire year. This is why it’s really important to keep your baby’s social security card in a safe place or at the very least make sure that you have easy access to their social security number (simply take a photo of it with your phone if all else fails).

Do I get tax benefit for having a kid?

You betcha! When your baby is born you now have a dependent which the state understands impacts upon your income, giving you a reduction on your taxable income of $4,050 per child. This can reduce the tax you pay per year by as much as $,1000 per child. Your child remains a dependent until they turn 19 at the end of the calendar year, live with you for more than 50% of the year, are financially supported by you (teens can have part time jobs so long as they don’t cover more than 50% of their living expenses) and aren’t claimed as a dependent on anyone else’s taxes.

Does having a kid increase my chances of an audit?

We all live in fear of an audit from the IRS and it’s always worth having a tax lawyer like Alexander Law Firm on speed dial just in case the IRS wants to take a closer look at your tax return or wants to raise a dispute. Fortunately, however, having a child is not one of the typical red flags that increases your chances of an audit.

What about President Trump’s new tax law?

Lots of parents have hears about Trump’s tax law and how it applies to them. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act will double child tax credit to $2000 per year and increase the standard deduction to $12,000 for single parents and $24,000 for married couples. This will not, however, come into effect until the end of the 2018 tax year so it’s certainly something for parents and expectant parents to look forward to.

The Power Of A Family Bond In Therapy

If you, your family member, or someone you know has to ever go through therapy, you need to understand that it can actually be a really stressful and worrying time. It doesn’t matter what they’re in therapy for, it’s the thought of having to talk to a stranger about problems that they might find personal to them. At the opposite end of the scale, it can be one of the most relieving things to do for some people. Another thing you also need to understand is the power of a family bond during a time of therapy. So to make sure you’re fully supporting someone who is in your family and might be going through therapy, here’s the power that it has.

Comfort & Openness

If there’s one thing family has the power to bring, it’s comfort and openness. Unless your family bond is so ruined that there’s no communication at all, then for a family member to know you’re by their side is one of the best things you can do. As we’ve said, it’s a really scary time for said family member, so the more comfort the feel for you, the more they’re going to relax into their therapy. As for openness, you often find that family members will share the most with the people they know the best, so if you’re at the therapy session it could open up a whole new side of them that the therapist so desperately needed to see. It’s also important that you’re open and honest with them about your feelings with regards to what they’re going through. If you’re scared, talk to them, it could help to build a better connection.

The Road To Recovery

The road to recovery comes to quick when family is involved, it’s the support unit that was always needed. Not just in therapy, but outside of it to. For example, there are facilities such as the The Recovery Village that is a therapy and recovery center for people with problems such as addiction. So many people are now attending places like this to try and get their life back on track, because it is so easy to go off the rails. With places like this, the road to recovery is supported through the outside help of the family. Without it, it can often feel like the person in question is alone, meaning they’re more reluctant to to carry on with the treatment. Outside encouragement from family members could be all they need.

Stronger Connections

The more you involve yourself with the family member, the stronger connections you’re going to make. Not only with the person needing therapy, but with the therapist themselves. It is often the case that people assume a family member going through therapy, no matter what it is for, will lead to a family break up, when in fact, it can only make the bond stronger. The best thing you can do is make sure you’re not judging no matter what, and that you’re always by their side through thick and thin. Arguments will only prolong the process.

Defending Yourself In The Case Of An Accident

It’s not always easy to follow up correctly after an accident has taken place. There are many reasons as to why you might have experienced this accident, but trying to pin down those facts directly after it occurs can be very difficult to manage, largely because you’re likely in a relatively dazed state. There are many guides out there helping you with the process of ensuring you communicate with the other party and exchange information amicably.

However, what if the accident wasn’t your fault? Could it be that there are many other methods you could take to overcome these issues? We’d argue that there absolutely are. Defending yourself in the case of an accident might not be something you really want to partake in thanks to the stress it offers, but it might be necessary to ensure you’re not penalized when you really shouldn’t be. Here are some methods to help you achieve a cohesive defence:

Get Your Story Straight

This means finding the facts, and immediately recording what happened as soon as you’re able. If you’re perfectly honest about everything you can remember, do not embellish facts, and consult with your lawyers at all times, the car wreck that wasn’t your fault is likely to be resolved in your favor, as offering a complete narrative that makes sense is more than likely to happen here. Getting your story straight is not something to consider to be a second priority. Without it, there is no way to defend yourself. This will help point out inconsistencies in the other parties argument. It will also hopefully align with any witnesses or camera footage that was captured at the scene.

Don’t Get Angry

It’s easy to become angry. It’s easy to feel that this injustice requires your aggressiveness to resolve. However, this is not the truth. When you are being tested by the false testimony of another person, you must understand this is human nature. The other person is of course doing something heinous, but it’s not your place to aggressively communicate with them. If you remain calm and professional and stick to facts only, you are much more likely to gain favor with the judge or jury. A calm persona will lead to a calm mind, and this often accurately helps you ascertain the facts and draw together a stronger defence from the get go.

Never Compromise

If you’re in the right, you’re in the right. Allowing a settlement or other silly confidence to simply make the case go away can set a precedent, and it won’t look kindly on you. It might affect your driving record or a whole host of other factors. Don’t allow yourself to give in. Prove yourself right, even when you lack evidence. With the simple advice listed previously, you will go a long way. Don’t give in simply because the court proceeding is cumbersome. When you win the case, you will be thankful to yourself for this.

With these tips, you can be sure that defending yourself in the case of an accident is much simpler to achieve.

Warning Signs Your Loved One Has Hit A Bump In Their Road To Recovery

We’ve spoken in the past about the struggles of coping with a serious injury in the family. It’s by no means an easy experience, and it can set you back as a unit in a multitude of ways. In fact, during those dark times, the only thing which can give hope is the idea of recovery. Hence why we turn to doctors. If we do that, surely our injured loved one can get back on track soon, right?

Perhaps. But, following medical advice without question isn’t always your best option. We all have different experiences and needs, after all. An injured person’s communication with their medical practitioner should be ongoing. And, that means looking out for signs and symptoms that all is not smooth on the road to recovery. There are a few different bumps and potholes your loved one might hit along the way. What’s more, failure to notice these means your doctor can’t do anything about them. To make sure that doesn’t happen, look out for the following signs that all is not how it should be.

A little too much reliance on painkillers

An increasing reliance on painkillers can become a serious issue. This can be tough to spot. After all, if the injury is causing a lot of pain, it’s no surprise your loved one wants those painkillers so much. But, it’s essential you bear in mind that opioid addiction is a severe and crippling issue. You only have to look to the opioid epidemic currently unravelling in Arizona to see how serious this in. In that state alone, there have been 1,071 suspected opioid deaths in the last ten months. So, with your loved one on those same tablets, it’s crucial you track things. It may be worth taking control of the dosage. Speak to your loved one about this, and make sure they’re on board. If you explain your reasoning, they’ll more than likely agree.

Failure to heal

In some instances, an injury simply doesn’t heal as fast as we would hope. It’s likely your loved one’s doctor gave an estimated recovery time. If you think healing is taking longer than that, head back. There can be many reasons for delayed healing. Some of them, such as infection, can be life-threatening. Make sure you’re all on the lookout for this and keeping that doctor up to date. Make sure, too, that you take immediate action if the injury worsens.

A drop in mood

Healing from a severe injury can also have a significant impact on mood. Many people who are dealing with situations like this slip into depression. This is especially the case if they’re unable to get up and move independently. Signs that this has happened to your loved include a sudden drop in mood, a loss of appetite, and a failure to sleep. If you notice any of these, talk to them about how they’re feeling. If things are bad, they may need therapy before they can get back on their feet.

Navigating Your First Vacation With a Baby

Is there anything nicer than being on vacation with the family? It’s a chance to bond and spend time together, have fun and make memories. You get to introduce your loved ones to new sights and sounds, new foods, new activities and so much more. But if your little family has gained an extra member in recent times, this can make things a little trickier when it comes to travel. However it’s no reason to simply stay at home, and you can still have a wonderful time together. Just bear these things in mind.

How Long Is The Flight?

Flying can be a little stressful for babies and young children, and so for your first trip together it might be best to choose a destination that’s not too far away. A flight lasting a couple of hours or less will be far more manageable with less pressure on you to keep them happy than one lasting several hours or more. Have a look at destinations that aren’t too far away and see how things go, that way if you want to take a trip a little further out next time you know exactly what to expect. Planning ahead is always recommended, you need to make sure your baby won’t be cold or hungry, and that they’re comfortable. Depending on how old your baby is when you want to go away, you might need a GPs note stating that you’re fit to fly. Don’t leave anything up to chance, you don’t want to end up having a nightmare journey when some stresses were unavoidable.

What Will The Weather Be Like?

When you’re taking a baby or small child away, you ideally want to be in a climate that’s neither too hot or cold. Extreme temperatures can be dangerous for babies and you don’t want to spend all of your time making sure they’re not too hot or cold. Choose your location, as well as the time of year you travel carefully. Do plenty of research into the likely weather conditions so you can be prepared and know that you won’t be spending the whole time seeking out warmth or hiding in the shade from the sun. Of course, the weather is never guaranteed but you can still be prepared for what you’re most likely to get.

Is it a Safe Country?

Keeping your family safe will of course be of the utmost importance to you, so when you’re going away there are a few precautions you might need to take. First of all, you will need to check out the foreign travel advice page of your government’s website, and check that it’s safe to travel. Some countries have high rates of crime, political instability, war and much more so certain areas are best to be avoided. Another thing to be aware of is the health of the country, for example in some parts of the world malaria and other illnesses are high risk especially at certain types of year. You might need travel vaccinations, and your baby might need to have their regular childhood injections pushed forward so they’re immune from these illnesses too. Even in very safe parts of the world you should always be aware of risks. Food poisoning, slips and trips and other accidents can happen to any member of your family. Make sure you have good travel insurance to cover you, and speak to a personal injury professional such as https://www.gograylaw.com when you return home if you’ve been ill or injured abroad. They can help you get the compensation you’re entitled to if it was a result of someone else’s neglect.

What Will You Need to Bring?

Most of us overpack when it comes to vacations, and you will probably find yourself packing far too many outfits, shoes and accessories for yourself. But when it comes to packing for a baby it can be even more of a minefield, as they actually do need and use so much stuff. You will need to consider everything from a portable steriliser to bottles, they need enough clothes and diapers, toiletries and much more. Do lots of research here, read articles and ask on forums if you’re unsure. Compile a list, and make sure you have everything you need. The weather and location will come into play so you’ll need to ensure you’re well prepared. Instead of giving every family member their own suitcase, it’s advisable to include some of everyone’s belongings in each case. At least that way if one of your cases goes missing (as they often do when it comes to airlines) you all still have at least some of the items you need. Another thing that you’ll of course want to remember is a camera with a memory card which has plenty of space on it. These will be magical moments on your first trip away together, and you will want to capture as many as possible.

Don’t Stress

When you’re stressed, your baby will also feel stressed. Be mentally prepared beforehand that the journey might not be the easiest. You little one will probably cry, there could be delays and your vacation will be a lot different to how it was when it was just you and your partner. But it’s so worth getting away, building these memories together and enjoying the company of your little family. Be prepared to take the bad with the good, and don’t sweat it if things don’t go exactly to plan. Do plenty of research and planning to avoid as many surprises as possible, but be aware there will probably still be some! Take it as it comes and don’t worry too much. People might think you’re mad taking a baby away when they won’t remember it, but you will! It will still be special to you. Just like the reason we celebrate our children’s early birthdays and throw them parties, the fact that they won’t remember is neither here nor there- it’s still fun for them at the time and something we will remember all of their lives. Our children are young for such a short period, it’s important to embrace this magical time.

Family Teamwork Can Get You Through the Hardest of Times

Families can get through a lot if they’re united as a team to deal with whatever’s thrown at them. That’s what having a strong family is all about. It gives you the support and confidence you need in order to thrive and succeed as an individual. But it can also help you during the most difficult times. When you know that you have people to turn to, it can make a big difference, so never underestimate the importance of maintaining a strong family unit.

A Bunch of Minds are Better Than One

If you all work together to find the solution to the difficult situation you find yourselves in, you’ll get it done much quicker. They say two minds are better than one, so surely a whole family’s minds are a lot better than one when it comes to problem solving and things like that. Everyone in your family will have his or her own skills, and they can all be harnessed in different situations.

Everything is Tougher When You’re Dealing With Loss, But You Can Support One Another

When your family experiences a loss, it can come as a shock. And even when you have time to prepare for that loss, it’s no less devastating when it comes. If you feel the loss was not necessary and was the fault of someone else, sites like https://www.lane-lane.com/chicago-wrongful-death-lawyer/ will be able to support your family. It’s just as important to look out for one another and to know that you can support yourselves as a family unit through this emotional turmoil too, however.

Knowing That You Have People You Can Open Up to Without Shame is a Big Deal

Opening up is difficult at the best of times, but it’s much easier when you have people around you who you feel comfortable talking with. It’s something not everyone has, and it’s easy to take it for granted. But you should never lose touch of how big a deal it is to be able to talk about anything that you need to with your close family members. It’s something you should also continually aim to get better at.

When One Person is Down, It’s the Responsibility of Everyone Else to Pick That Person Up Again

This is the great thing half close knit families. When one person is feeling down, everyone else in the family knows that it’s up to them to raise that person’s spirits once more or just help them deal with whatever they’re going through at that moment. It can be things like that that help families get through the most difficult times without breaking apart completely. So make sure you play your part in this.

Working as a team is not just a corny cliche; it’s something that every family should take to heart. Appreciate what you have with those around you, and even when the tough times do arrive for you, be prepared to work together and support one another so that you can get through it all together.

Working Online Can Be The Perfect Career, But Only If You Know What You’re Doing!

For many people, the idea of having to spend all of their time sitting at a desk in a stuffy office working for someone else is just about the most unbearable thing in the world. Of course, for the longest time, many people simply didn’t have a choice in the matter. However, over the last decade, more and more people are turning to the internet as an alternative. Not only can many online careers like blogging allow you to work for yourself, but you can do so from the comfort of your own home. Sounds perfect right? Well, the truth is that there are a lot of challenges involved in this kind of career that you really need to be ready for. With that in mind, here are some things that you need to keep in mind if you want to start working for yourself online.

Making your website stand out

If you’re going to start working online, the first thing you need is a website. Of course, that probably won’t come as much of a shock to anyone considering this type of career path. However, just “having a website” simply isn’t good enough. If you want your online business to get noticed then your web design has to be good enough to stand out from the crowd. This means everything from your branding to the way in which people navigate through your website has to be as high quality as possible. Working with professional designers is usually the best way to make it the best it can be.

Using social media

Getting your name out there on the internet can often be the biggest challenge. After all, there are so many other people doing the same thing as you that being able to stand out can often seem impossible. The best thing that you can do is leverage your social media accounts for all they’re worth. Connect with potential clients and customers directly and create a sense of community by collaborating with other people. The “social” side of social media is one of the most valuable tools in your arsenal.

Creating valuable content

The world of the internet is one that is ruled by content. If you’re not creating valuable content that people want to engage with, then you’re never going to get anywhere. This means that you need things like blog posts to be as entertaining as possible and, ideally, the kinds of things that people will want to share with their friends and family on sites like Facebook and Twitter.

None of this is intended to somehow discourage you from working for yourself. Rather, it’s there to stop you from coming up against any nasty surprises if you do decide to take that career path. If any of the things on this list, as well as many of the other challenges of working for yourself online, seem as though they’re too difficult to get past, at least you know that it’s not the right career for you before giving up on what you’re currently doing.
