Knowing your way around a toolbox is a useful skill to have. Not only does it save you money on hiring a professional for a quick DIY fix, it allows you to keep your home in good condition. However, no matter how many DIY articles and books you read, you are not an effective replacement for a trained electrician or plumber. When things break around the house, it’s better to admit that you don’t know what you’re doing and call someone in to fix it. Attempting to repair things that are beyond your understanding in an attempt to save money, often result in much bigger expenses. You will be lucky if those bills are only for repairing your work, and not a stay in the hospital.

Plumbing

There are quite a few plumbing jobs that should be easy to do yourself. Unblocking the drains either requires a good plunger and some elbow grease, a solution of baking soda and vinegar to clear the blockage, or you can even clear it by hand as a last resort. Plastic traps are easy enough to remove, but metal ones may require some tools and muscle power. Once the pipe is removed, you can push out the blockage.

Where you can get into trouble is if you try to modify your plumbing system, which includes extending hot water lines or re-routing your sewer pipes. Working with hot water means copper pipes, and that requires a blowtorch. Unless you have some serious welding experience, it’s best to leave the torch jobs to a plumber. While this isn’t as dangerous as electric work, plumbing problems can get out of hand fast and lead to an expensive and wet future. Your brief plumbing career won’t seem like such a money saver once you have to pay to fix the damage to your house, and to have your work redone properly.

Roof leaks

Even with well-meaning guides on the internet, fixing a roof can easily go very wrong. Fixing a leak is the most common thing that your local roofer will get called in to fix after the homeowner has made a botch job. They usually just keep adding caulk and think that will fix the leak, but usually it doesn’t. The result of their hard work is a soggy attic and a lot of wasted caulk. A trained professional can patch the leak using real roofing materials.

Asbestos removal

Asbestos has been used for about 150 years on a large commercial scale for fireproofing and insulation. Unfortunately it can also cause serious lung diseases such as mesothelioma, asbestosis and lung cancer. This is the biggest reason why you need to hire an expert to help you remove it. While it’s possible to perform a DIY asbestos removal, it’s not recommended. Aside from the inherent dangers of toxicity, there are many laws that govern the removal of asbestos because it can pose a danger to those in close proximity, like your neighbors.

Of course, not every child is going to that interested in exercising their physical muscles. Instead, they might want to give their creative muscles a workout. If that’s the case, then art classes are a fantastic option. Kids often struggle to be able to express themselves through words and it can be the cause of a lot of frustration. Art classes help them to learn how to channel their emotions into something positive. Whether they’re feeling angry, sad, excited, afraid, or any of the thousands of emotions that kids feel throughout the course of a day. The other wonderful thing about art classes is that there often isn’t any kind of limit to the sort of things that kids can do in them. If you child is a big fan of painting, then they can do that, but if not then they have options for plenty of other things like sculpting, drawing, and any number of other options. Kids can be complete show-offs sometimes. Now, that’s not necessarily a bad thing, but it can get a little grating if they’re constantly trying to get your attention when you’re trying to get some work done or do the cooking or cleaning. For those kinds of kids then drama might well be the perfect option. There’s nothing better for kids who like to be in the spotlight than by letting them strut their stuff on the stage. Not only will it be something that they will enjoy but will also help to build their confidence, improve public speaking, and teach them how to communicate more effectively with people. Plus there are few moments where you’ll feel more proud than when your child takes a bow up on the stage to a huge round of applause.

Kids love music. There isn’t a child out there who doesn’t love listening to music, just look a the number of posters on most kid’s rooms. So why not find out if they would be interested in actually learning to play it as well? Ask them what kind of instrument they’re interested in, and there’s a pretty good chance that their school offers music lessons for them. One of the best things about music is that it allows kids to learn a skill and be creative but they don’t necessarily have to be part of a group. Of course, that’s always an option, and many kids love setting up bands with each other, but if your kids are a little more introverted, then they may well feel happy sitting and getting deep into a piece of music. Of course, be prepared to be asked for music stuff for every single birthday and Christmas for years to come if they find themselves really enjoying it.

There’s nothing wrong with kids having a bit of competitive spirit, as long as it’s something that they’re able to channel and use in a productive way. If your kid loves to be active and also feels a desire to win at everything they do, then there’s a good chance that they’d do incredibly well on one of their school’s sports teams. Schools often have teams for just about every sport out there no whatever kind of thing your child is a fan of, there’s a solid chance that the school can accommodate them. Not only does playing for a sports team allow them to exercise their competitive spirit but it also teaches them a huge amount of valuable skills. There’s no room on a sports team for someone who wants all of the glory all of the time. If you want to be a great team player then you’ve got to be able to communicate with your teammates, work with other people, follow directions and know when it’s best to step back and let other people take charge of a situation.

Of course, not every child is built to be a sports star, but that doesn’t mean they can’t still be a part of a team. Marching band is a fantastic activity for kids who need a little extra discipline. It offers the creative outlet that music provides as well being very active, while also offering a structured activity that can help them to learn an incredibly valuable degree of discipline. Marching bands teach kids a great deal of things about following instructions, working as part of a unit and understanding that sometimes the group is just as important as the individual. It’s the sort of thing that some kids think of as lame or nerdy, but after they get a hold of some color guard practice flags, they’re likely to find themselves totally hooked! You really would be amazed at how much the lessons that marching band can teach help kids to get more out of school as a whole.

So why not help them channel that productively by signing them up for the debate team. That way they have the chance to flex those muscles without getting themselves in any trouble. Not only that but the ability to research and argument and make a point in a clear and concise way is the kind of skill that they will likely find incredibly useful once they get into adult life. Every person finds themselves needing to argue their case from time to time and the lessons that being on the debate team can teach will help your child get a serious advantage in later years.
Of course, there’s no way that a kid will be able to take on every activity that they’re interested in. Every child is different, so it’s important that you talk to them and help them figure out what kind of thing would be fun and engaging for them. Also, one of the most important things to remember is that your child’s life shouldn’t always be filled up from dawn until dusk every day. There is definitely a lot of value in kids being able to take time just to spend doing nothing. It’s during those times that kids process and understand the kinds of things that they learned during the day, use their imaginations, and unwind from the stress that things like school can often bring. With all the daily challenges and tasks surrounding the lives of us busy moms it can sometimes feel like we never have enough time for ourselves. Between all the taxiing, shopping, dinner, pack lunches, organising homework, bathtime, bedtime and cleaning there really is very little time left to call our own.

 

But investing in ourselves and finding time to pamper ourselves and unwind is a crucial part of being a happy and loving mom. If we get overwhelmed, tired and stressed our kids feel it so we owe it to ourselves and our kids to find pockets of time where we can do something nice for ourselves and treat ourselves from time to time. So here are two of our favourite ways to relax and destress to keep us feeling happy and healthy.

 

When the Kids are at School

 

This time can be full to the rafters will daily tasks such as food shopping, cleaning and work. This can certainly take up the majority of our days but there is always time to squeeze a little extra something into our days to look after our general wellbeing and find an extra 30-60 minutes a day.

 

One of the best things we can do stay in peak condition is exercise. And of all the best exercises we can do to stay feeling calm, relaxed and happy is yoga. A full mind, body and soul workout it truly is one of the best ways we can spend time with ourselves working on both our physical and mental fitness and wellbeing.

 

Why not look for local yoga centres in your area, check out their time table and see which classes you’d be able to go to. Alternatively there are some fantastic free videos online that you can try if you’d prefer to try it out first, in the privacy of your home. Yoga is all about feeling great so why not treat yourself to a beautiful pair of new yoga leggings to have you really feeling the part and get you into the yoga and meditation mood.

Once the kids are finally in bed and in the land of nod it’s all too tempting to just launch ourselves on the sofa and put in some quality time with our latest beloved Netflix series. However sometimes we can do ourselves the world of good by treating ourselves to something a little different.

 

Creating a home spa is a lovely idea to pamper ourselves and make us look and feel fantastic. It’s really easy to get a little home spa set up with so many home spa products on the market these day, it’s never been easier to bring a little spa luxury into our homes.

 

First of all put on some relaxing music and light some candles. Pour yourself a hot water soak and add your favourite essential oil and just sit back and enjoy the glorious feeling of your tired feet being soothed back to life. Whilst you’re at it, there’s really no reason that you shouldn’t go the whole hog and exfoliate the dead skin off your feet, clip your nails and complete your food spa with a pretty nail colour.

 

Using the same bowl (washed of course) you can fill it again with hot water and a beautiful scented essential oil, place a towel over your head and give yourself a fabulous pore opening facial steam. After 10 minutes, wash your face with cold water to refresh your skin and then give yourself an indulgent face pack. As you wait for the face pack to work its magic, why not use the same nail polish that you used on your toes to give yourself a manicure. Seeing your nails looking pretty and polished can give us all a little boost in the self-esteem stakes. With your beautiful feet, nails and skin you can now proudly walk into the next day feeling refreshed and fabulous.

Dogs, much like humans, can suffer from all kinds of mental health issues. One of the most common problems that we see in dogs is anxiety. When you leave the room and they appear to be distraught or if you find them scratching walls and barking in an attempt to run away from you, then those are behavioural problems that might stem from their anxiety.

What causes anxiety in dogs?

 

One of the most common causes is a pre-existing illness or physical condition. These can often develop into anxiety and can turn into larger issues, such as fears or phobias. Fears can also be a major component in behavioural changes, often as a result of a nasty or scary experience when your dog is forced into a bad situation. Dogs can also be deprived of social interaction if left cooped up at home without anyone to interact with. There’s also separation anxiety, to the feeling that your dog has been abandoned by you. This usually triggers if the dog has multiple owners or is being neglected by the owner.

Whether you’re getting a new pet or if you’ve decided to take your dog’s health issues seriously, it’s recommended that you take them to your local veterinarian. Usually, the first thing your veterinarian will do is rule out underlying problems such as diseases that could cause the behavioural changes. Blood tests will also be carried out to rule out the possibility of toxic substances affecting your dog. Once those possibilities are ruled out, your veterinarian will move on to the history of your dog. They’ll ask you about fears, anxiety problems or phobias, and your dog might require medication to solve their issues.
