Living With A Loan: Everything You Need To Know

I think it’s fair to say that there are quite a few people who rely on loans to get by. Either they want to live past their means or they struggle because they are constrained by a limited income. Many parents rely on loans simply to pay for the needs of their children. This brings us to the question of whether taking out a loan is always a bad idea. The answer of course, is no. You just need to be prepared for what that loan entails, understand the right way to take out a loan and recognise the warning signs.

Paying It Back

JPhotoStyle

It’s easy to forget that when you take out a loan you are not getting a freebie. Loan companies are not charities and one day you will be expected to pay any money that you take out back with interest. We fail to remember this because once we have the cash in our account, it can be freeing. Finally, we can buy everything that we want or needed that used to be out of our price range. Suddenly, we have the cash for our luxury holiday or even just a new dishwasher. Just keep in mind that the money isn’t yours and that’s why you should aim to take out as little as possible.

You also need to think about the cost. Make sure that you are looking at any company you choose to borrow from carefully. Look at the interest rate and any other charges that might be mentioned on the site. If you do this, there should be no chance of you ending up in a situation where you can’t afford to pay back the money you borrowed.

Are You In Control?

Pic Link

They key thing to remember is that you should be in charge of the loan. It should be up to you when you pay it back. For instance, you may find yourself in the position where you can pay back the loan earlier. If that’s the case the company should allow you do this without facing an extra charge. Lenders such as Credit24 do allow this possibility while others won’t. That’s because they know if you pay the loan back earlier they lose out on a higher level of interest. It’s important to understand that lenders are businesses like any other. Their main purpose is to make a profit, not to give you financial support.

Are You Becoming Dependent?

Picture Link

You don’t want to find yourself in a situation where you’re dependent on loans to get by. Loans should be used sparingly and occasionally. Be aware of falling into the situation where you’re borrowing money to pay off a debt. This is essentially a debt spiral and it can be incredibly difficult to escape. It will slowly eat away at your finances until you have nothing left. Only borrow if you know that you’ll be able to pay it back before the interest rate becomes too high to manage.

I hope this helps you navigate the tricky world of borrowing, lending, and loans.

Red Alert! What To Do During Common Home Emergencies

(Wikimedia)

As I’m sure you discovered a long time ago, life isn’t fair. In fact, as we get further and further into adulthood, it seems it gets less and less fair with the increased amount we have to protect and maintain! One of the many harsh truths of adulthood is the risk of various home emergencies that can jump on us out of the blue. Here are some of the most common house emergencies, and how to handle them.

Leaking Roof

(Wikimedia)

This can be a really disheartening one, especially if you’re always telling your kids about how much you do to keep a roof over their heads! As soon as you discover a leak, the first thing you need to do (as I’m sure you’ve guessed), is to try and find the source of the leak, and place a container somewhere to collect the water. After that, you need to remove any nearby electrical appliances, then switch off general power outlets which could be at risk until you’ve managed to resolve the leak. If there’s any soft furnishings getting dripped on, move them out of the way where possible or cover them in plastic. Finally, call a local emergency roofer to come in, pinpoint the source of the leak, and patch it up.

Burst Pipe

(Wikimedia)

Of all the common home emergencies, this usually feels the most stressful, even though it’s not that much more chaotic than other domestic disasters. If you’re lucky, a burst pipe will be obvious; one continuous dripping which forms an unwanted puddle of water somewhere on the floor. This is in comparison to the kind which stays isolated in the wall, and is very hard to detect. Because these aren’t immediately obvious, a lot of people can leave them alone for a long time, which can make the damage worse and worse. If you hear a dripping but can’t see anything, investigate! Again, the first thing you should do is put out a container if necessary, and then make sure that any kind of electrical items are out of the way. Next, find your water meter and turn off the water supply to the whole property, but leave your sink taps on until you drain the pipes completely. Finally, call an emergency plumber, have them come out to your property, and leave the rest to the professionals.

Hot Water System Issues

(Pixabay)

This home emergency is much more forgiving, provided you’re not in a rush to get out of the house fast and blindly stick your head under the shower! The most obvious sign of issues with your hot water system is, of course, a lack of hot water. However, leaks in odd places, and strange smells which seem to irradiate from one part of the house, can be a sure sign that your hot water is on the fritz. The first thing you need to do here is call a plumber. Then, turn the water off by the hot water system and turn on a hot tap somewhere to release the pressure.

By handling these home emergencies the right way, you’ll keep your whole household safe and minimize damage to your home!

Why Every Mom Should Consider A Freelance Business

Image from Pixabay

Being a stay-at-home mom can be tough. Many financial difficulties come with running a single-income household. Plus, you might have aspirations of taking your career further. At the same time, getting a job can be just as hard. You’ll have less time to look after the kids and might need to pay for child care.

But there’s another option. Freelancing can be a fantastic idea. You can do most of your work at home, gain valuable skills, and bring in some extra income. Here are some of the key reasons why all moms should consider creating their own freelance business.

More Time With The Kids

One of the main reasons some moms don’t want a 9-5 is it reduces their time with the children. Someone needs to be there to look after the young ones and pick your older ones up from school. If you do a freelance job from home, you get the best of both worlds.

Freelancers have the opportunity to set their own schedules. Need a day off to take your youngest to the dentist? No problem. Have to take a break to pick your child up from school? You can. It gives working moms the perfect work-life balance.

The only concern you might have is the hassle of working and running after the kids at the same time. But it can be done. Use some of these tips to make life easier as a working mom, and you can take care of both.

It Takes Limited Resources

The kind of equipment you need depends on what kind of freelance business you intend to run. But in most cases, you’ll barely need anything! You can do all sorts of freelance work using nothing but a computer. Of course, you might also want a smartphone for communication purposes.

There are a few other tools which can help. If your work involves going out to meet clients, a credit card reader will work great for taking fast payments. You might also need some specialist equipment depending on what you’re doing. For instance- freelance transcribers can benefit from a transcription kit.

It’s something you can do yourself with minimal investment. It’s worth splashing out a little on a solid computer and smartphone, though- these will help you make your money back.

There Are Plenty Of Business Ideas

You might be worried about certain qualifications or education. But with freelancing, all you need is a skill and the chance to prove it. Maybe you’re well-versed in graphical editing. You can show off your previous work on social media and find clients that way. Or maybe you want to use Craigslist to advertise your marketing abilities.

Blogging is another great freelance business idea. No matter what area you’re passionate about, you can create content based around it and bring in viewers. It can be monetized through ads, merchandise, and even selling eBooks.
Sites like eLance and Fiverr can also give you some ideas. People often advertise the jobs they need doing on these sites. While you might not make much money, it can be a useful stepping stone and help you build up a portfolio and client base.

A Trio of Health-Friendly Drinks To Introduce Your Kids To

It is only natural that as parents we want our children to have the healthiest lives possible. Part of that comes in the form of protecting them; the rest comes from the things we provide for them.

Modern science has shown us the damage that conventional ways of eating can cause. Most of us now have the knowledge to know what we shouldn’t give to our kids, but rarely do we focus quite so heavily on the things that we should. There are a variety of at-home ideas to try, all of which are best being suggested to your children early so they can gain a taste for them.

Like the idea of introducing good, positive and somewhat alternative concoctions in your child’s life – but in need of some inspiration? Never fear, I’ve got you covered…

  1. Matcha

PixaBay

Matcha is one of those things that has been tarred as being in the realm of hipsters when in reality we should all be making more of an effort to consume it. The health benefits of matcha are off the charts; it’s rich in antioxidants, improves memory and concentration and a multitude of other wonders.

When brewed correctly, it can be a pleasant drink as the likes of Joy of Matcha are more than aware. However, it can take a little getting used to – so it’s worth focusing on ensuring your kids get a good start.

One thing to keep in mind is that Matcha does contain caffeine, as it is a form of green tea. It may be best reserved for older children if you have a concern about caffeine (bear in mind how much caffeine is in soda!). Like all teas, matcha contains L-theanine which helps counterbalance the hyperactive energy we associate with caffeine – but still, use with caution.

  1. Fire Cider

PixaBay

If this sounds a little intimidating – well, that’s largely because it is. On the outside, the ingredients for this traditional winter drink sound somewhat alarming – the temptation to drink horseradish is not something most of us have ever felt. Running your eyes down a list of fire cider ingredients can feel like a flirtation with the ridiculous.

Fire cider is an old remedy, and that tends to be a good thing. People throughout the world have relied on it for hundreds of years for improved immunity and good health through winter. It’s, therefore, worth considering, and introducing children to it while young will give them a chance to adjust to the taste.

  1. Elderberry Syrup

PixaBay

In the above examples, I have focused on substances that it may take awhile for an adult to get used to. Start them young and all that.

The last item I want to draw attention to does not have a taste that will offend. In fact, when brewed correctly, elderberry syrup is a delicious winter spoonful of goodness that just happens to have a multitude of health benefits. What’s more, it’s incredibly sustainable, making use of a berry that most dismiss as useless.

Which one will you try to tempt your kids with?

Home Is Where the Heart Is: Future-Proofing Your Home for Your Children

The future is a topic that very few people enjoy talking about. Sure, the immediate future is fun. For example, maybe you plan to go on a trip with your kids soon, or perhaps there’s an upcoming party that you can’t wait to attend. That’s fun and games, but when we talk about the distant future, our mood can quickly shoot down when we realise how much work we’ve got ahead of us.

Our homes are one of the few things that we’ll leave behind with our children once we retire. Perhaps we might stay in the same home as our children, or maybe we’ll move to another location—either way, it’s never a bad idea to future-proof our homes so that our children have less work when it comes to managing and improving it.

Pexels
Here are a couple of long-term improvements that’ll make your home more comfortable to live in, and ways to improve your house for the future when your children grow up and take over.

Protecting Against Disaster

If you live in an area that’s prone to weather disasters, then you’ve probably thought about installing anti-flooding measures, hurricane panels and possibly even a generator in the basement in case your power goes out. These are just the tip of the iceberg too. When it comes to making your house a castle and preparing for all kinds of incidents, you also might want to consider build and stocking up a disaster shelter.

Most disaster shelters are built underground so that they’re immune to the effects of weather and radioactive fallout. It might seem a little cliche to have an underground bunker with years worth of supplies, but survivalists swear by it and, at the end of the day, they’re going to be the ones with an advantage of something was to happen to your city or local area.

However, a disaster shelter is a very time-consuming job. In the meantime, you can invest in
protecting your home from things such as hurricanes, storms and power outages by utilising several home improvements. You won’t want large objects to slam through your windows during a storm, and you don’t want power cuts to interrupt your cooking or crucial work.

Extensions for the Family

If you plan to turn your home into a mansion capable of housing your grandchildren as well, then you need to start thinking about a house extension. Most extensions require permission from local authorities, but once you’ve got confirmation you can pretty much build whatever you want. You can extend existing bedrooms, build another floor onto the house, increase the basement area or even build an entirely separate building if you have a lot of space in the back yard.

You might also want to consider building additional bathrooms, studies and changing rooms. It can be costly to rewire your home and extend plumbing, but it’s worth the investment if your children plan to grow old and stay in their current home. It’s also a good opportunity to reinforce the structure of your home if it’s suffered damage in the past.

Home Decor Inspiration From Across The Globe

We all absorb influences, unconsciously and consciously, in all areas of our lives. We take influence from people who are important to us and from what we read. We use processes from our work lives in our homes, and vice versa.

In our decor, too, we take a tip from trends that are in vogue. Feature walls, clean lines, and hidden storage are part of that. But one type of influence we don’t always talk about is the international flavor. When we go abroad for a holiday, we marvel at the styles of architecture and decor we see. So what can we take from other cultures to make our homes look and work better?

French Cafe Culture In Our Gardens
Saying it this early in the year may make it seem less attractive, but come May you’ll want to spend more time outside. Popular cafes in Paris make use of what French people call the “terrasse.” The outdoor, seated area usually consists of pretty, lattice-patterned tables and chairs. A parasol is a perfect way of stopping the sun from becoming overpowering, and also deflects brisker winds.

Scandinavian Softness In Our Bedrooms

The average Scandinavian winter is much like a typical Canadian one. Dark and snowy, and even in spring and summer it’s not exactly scorchingly hot. So cozy interiors with soft lighting are a fundamental aspect of Scandi decor.

It’s something worth considering in your bedroom, where winding down in a warm environment is key. Light fleeces are a great addition to bedding in winter and a replacement for it in summer.

Chinese Functionality In The Living Room

First making a big hit in the west in the 1990s, Feng shui is a concept that divided people at the time. Whether or not you believe in all its principles, it certainly has its applications in the living room.

To allow the flow of energy (or Qi), Chinese living rooms are furnished sparsely but comfortably. It can certainly help eliminate stress and fuss in your living space. Sites like bloomingsense.com are a perfect source of ideas.

Italian Elegance In The Kitchen

Few countries in the world take cooking as seriously as Italy. The influence of their cuisine is in evidence on our dining tables for sure. It’s therefore no bad thing to take a few tips from them on arranging your kitchen.
The key aspects of an Italian kitchen are elegance and efficiency (for both cooking and housework) – two things that often don’t go together. Not too many gadgets, just the important ones. A coffee maker is essential, of course. A rack attached to the wall is the place to hang your pans like this: http://www.moneycrashers.com/make-diy-hanging-pot-rack/ – unless you’re feeling brave enough to have one that is fixed to the ceiling. The key is to keep room on your surfaces so you can work freely and quickly.

If all of the above makes you feel like your home is a bit mish-mash, you don’t need to do all of them. But for many, the functional simplicity of these approaches makes for a house that works smoothly and looks superb. Effortless class, affordable prices – what more
could you ask for?

Family Vacationing In The Arctic: It’s Not So Scary

The Arctic is one of the most magical places on Earth. It’s a frosty, winter wonderland where, for some parts of the year, the sun doesn’t shine at all.

It’s important not to confuse the Arctic with its more extreme counterpart, the Antarctic, where only a few frigid scientists live in total isolation. The Arctic is milder and more varied, offering families the opportunity to have a fantastic time.

Here are some of the places you must visit with your kids in the vast, Arctic expanse.

First Stop: Canada

Of all the places in the Arctic, Canada is one of the friendliest. In the far North of the country, you’ll find the Yukon, a vast swathe of the Northern Territory buried deep within the arctic circle. It’s a barren and bleak landscape, dominated by beautiful vistas and incredible wildlife. Here children will get a chance to see caribou, musk oxen, and seals up close and in their natural environments.

Flickr

The region is also home to a large Inuit community, settled some 25,000 years ago when humans first migrated away from the plains of Asia and over the Bering Strait during the last Ice Age. Here there are opportunities to learn about the Inuit’s way of life and how the manage to survive and thrive in such an extreme environment. Being with the Inuit is a testament to human ingenuity, and a great opportunity to show your children just how diverse a place the world really is.

The Svalbard Archipelago: Norway

The Svalbard Archipelago in the northern tip of Norway sounds remote, and it is. Flights from Norway’s capital, Oslo, can take nearly 3 hours to reach their destination.

The main island of the archipelago is Spitsbergen, an ideal place for family adventure, thanks to the fact that it is very well served by transport links compared to the rest of the region. Here, you’ll find genuine tundra and immense glaciers.

The main attraction of the area are the polar bears, as well as Austfonna, a giant 3,000-plus-square-mile ice cap that dominates the landscape. It’s worth noting the roads are in short supply here, so most of your trips will have to be by boat. Don’t forget to wrap up warm.

The Lulea Archipelago: Sweden

One of the best holiday adventures for families is a trip to Lapland, especially in the Lulea Archipelago region. Here families can explore the more than 1,300 islands that make up the area, as well as take advantage of the local Swedish hospitality. There are log cabins galore, as well as plenty of activity sites where kids can try out new things. Activities include dogsledding with huskies, snowmobiling and winter safaris in the Arctic wilderness.

Greenland

Greenland is both an ancient Inuit settlement as well as a Dutch colony. As a result, the culture here is nothing short of magical. The capital city, Nuuk, is a great place to introduce kids to entirely new types of food they won’t have tasted before. There’s also a chance to see the Ilulissat Icefjord, a world heritage site since 2004.

As a busy Mom, you can often feel like you’re running a million miles a minute (on empty!), there’s always a chore to be done, or that you’ve forgotten to do something. It’s bittersweet. One moment, it can feel like the greatest thing in the world – you have a beautiful family, great work and a lot to keep your mind active. Then the next, it can feel like a curse – you’re always tired, you never know what time or day it is without asking, and you’re forever wondering when you’ll get a break.

Let’s talk Mom life to kick us off. You’re busy, and it’s unlikely that you can change that. Not
only do you have commitments, but you also kind of enjoy having things to do and being needed. And that’s okay, we all do. But, you just wish things ran a little smoother from time to time. If you struggle to get from school to work or home, to school, to practice or rehearsal and back again in one piece, to get your chores done, or to get through to your fussy eater, or even to get your kids to listen to you at times, you might feel like you need a little magic. When all you need is a plan.

The Solution:

Whether it’s educating and disciplining your children, or getting things done in-between your duties as a Mom, you might need to pick up a few tricks. Whether that’s hacks on keeping your kids calm when they’re unhappy with something, or getting them to help out with chores, these handy hints will give you that AHA moment!

Health

https://www.pexels.com/photo/sliced-oranges-kiwi-melon-blueberry-and-dragonfruit-on-white-ceramic-platter-218844/

As a Mom, you’d probably get a ton of A+’s for looking after your kids’ health. When you have
more than one, you’ll feel like a seasoned professional at medicating the flu, wiping noses and even scrubbing the floor after an accident. But, when it comes to yourself, you may have no idea when you last went to see a medical professional. Either it’s too hard to focus on yourself when your family needs you, or you feel like you don’t have the time. But, it’s time to drop that attitude and make sure your health is covered in the easiest of ways (and no, we’re not talking insurance here).

The Solution:

Forgetting about yourself is easily done. The best way to stop it from happening in the future is to have a quick and easy way to get appointments made. When you need to find a new doctor or dentist, you can often feel like you put off doing it, thinking that it will take you hours

to do. Instead, find a directory site like Dentists.Local24Hour.com to find a new one quickly and easily, book your appointment and remember to show up!

Home

https://www.pexels.com/photo/love-pen-bed-drinking-1880/

Staying organised around the home is probably one of your biggest concerns. It’s not always easy to prioritise what needs to be done and when. Between making sure your children are cared for and at the right place at the right time, and that you are too, work on your house can often take a backseat. Days turn into weeks, weeks turn into months, and then, before your now it, years have gone by without a single home improvement taking place.

The Solution:

Although home improvements, renovations and decorating can seem like huge jobs, they don’t have to be. You just need to adjust your mindset when it comes to getting them done. If you really want to improve your home, you can – regardless of the time, you have to do it in and your budget. Start by sitting down. Take fives minutes to write up the jobs that need doing, then walk away. The next day, spend five minutes prioritising them. Then, the day after that, work out a budget and time frame for the task at the top of your list. Tackling things bit by bit will allow you to become more organized in a short space of time.

Socially

https://www.pexels.com/photo/happy-coffee-6347/

How often do you feel like your social life is either entirely forgotten about or non existent? You’re not the only one! When you’re schedule is jam packed with playdates, practice, tutoring, work, volunteering and keeping your house in order, how are you supposed to have the time to interact with your friends (and not other Moms)? You might even feel like you can’t think about a social life, when you have other priorities to focus on. Well ladies, that just won’t cut it. You’re a person as well as a Mom and you need to interact!

Chores

https://www.pexels.com/photo/person-looking-searching-clean-2371/

If you ever hear another mother saying that they love doing chores, they’re probably lying. Or embellishing at least. Nobody loves to do chores. They’re a called a ‘chore’ for a reason. But, you can learn to love them. If you feel like you run on a never-ending cycle of doing the laundry, vacuuming, making beds and cleaning the bathroom, it’s time to draw up and schedule and call in some help.

The Solution:

A schedule. Plain and simple. With a chores chart, everything will get done a lot more efficiently. You’re able to see clearly what jobs need doing around the house and on what days – even if some things are done every day. Then, you can allocate a specific job to each person (if they’re old enough) in the family. Just because you’re a Mom, it doesn’t mean you
have to do everything for everyone.

Food

https://www.pexels.com/photo/bread-breakfast-cheese-food-236813/

Whenever the idea of food is brought up, it’s likely that you immediately are full or panic and guilt, or you’re full of exciting foodie ideas and recipes. Or, of course, you could be completely lacking in any sort of reaction. Either way, the idea of food and children can either excite you or fill you with fear. When you have fussy eaters, meal times can feel like a nightmare. If you struggle with healthy recipes, getting food prepared fast enough or knowing what you buy, hopefully, a little organization will help.

The Solution:

Having healthy children doesn’t have to feel impossible, especially not when you have a system that works. Organize yourself when it comes to your children’s food and eating habits
by getting them involved, creating (even more) charts and even educating them a little. Firstly, you’re going to need to find some recipes for inspiration – Pinterest is perfect for this. Then write up an ‘essentials’ shopping list that you can work off each week for a variety of different meals. Next, you’re going to want to involve your children in the shopping and preparation periods. This way, they’ll take an interest in food and how it’s prepared, and they’ll likely be more interested in eating it too.

Fitness

https://www.pexels.com/photo/woman-in-white-jacket-holding-silver-iphone-196654/

And now we’re on to the seventh and final step. By this point, you’ve probably learned a little, taken in a little, and be wondering what could possibly be left. It might be last, but fitness certainly is a step not to be missed. You might think that your fitness levels can be forgotten about when you have everything else to do – but that’s not a good enough excuse. After all, if you’re fit and healthy and full of energy, you’ll be more productive with the other six steps and be able to show your kids how it’s done.

The Solution:

You don’t have to set exercise or fitness goals to want to work on your health and fitness. All you have to do is do! As long as you start to do something, you’ll be well on your way to a better level of fitness. But, if you find organizing it hard, why not join a weekly class that is local and at a convenient time? You might also want to rope in a friend and go running in the park after the morning school run, or maybe even swimming. The trick to organization here is to plan ahead and find support, not drown in the thought of doing something on your own.

Avoid Health Hassles With Your Dog By Keeping On Top Of Things

A pet could be the perfect thing to complete your family. There’s no better family pet than a dog. Those four legged furries have a habit of cementing their place in your home and your heart. Though dog ownership offers many rewards, it’s a big responsibility. As well as caring for your dog’s needs, you have to care for their health, too. A dog can’t tell you how they’re feeling. It’s important you spot any problems before they get serious. You’ll also need to take steps to cover the financial costs of illness! This list should give you some idea of health commitments any dog owner needs to consider.

NEUTERING
Unless you intend to breed your dog, it’s crucial you get them neutered. There are various  reasons for this. It can improve your dog’s behaviour, and make them easier to train and handle. It also ensures there won’t be any unexpected accidents! Most importantly, though, neutering can save your pooch many health problems. This is especially the case for female dogs. Without neutering, they’re exposed to health issues such as womb cancer.

VACCINATION

From the moment your dog is old enough, it’s your responsibility to ensure you get them vaccinated against disease. Your vet will tell you which vaccinations are necessary for your pooch. After the initial round, you’ll need to remember boosters as and when they’re necessary. Your vet will send you useful letters to remind you what needs booking and when.
Keeping on top of this is crucial. As your dog goes out and about in the world, they’re exposed to many possible hazards. Not protecting them is careless, and can lead to significant problems down the line!

KNOWLEDGE

The more knowledge you have of dog diseases, the better you’ll be able to spot problems in your dog. You don’t have to gain a vet qualification here; you just need to know basic warning signs. Take the time to research so that you’re prepared. Remember that your dog won’t be able to tell you when something’s wrong. Having some idea of possible diseases could save crucial time when making a diagnosis. A vet only has a short period with your dog. They’ll appreciate any suggestions you can offer about what you’ve noticed. It’s also important that you take the time to notice your dog’s behaviour. You’ll come to know how they greet you
each morning or their regular eating habits. Understanding this behaviour is essential for seeing when something changes.

PROTECTION FROM PESTS

You’ll also need to protect your dog from parasites. Tics and fleas can be unpleasant for your dog and can cause serious health issues. Not to mention that a flea infestation can be extremely hard to get rid of in your home. Every three months or so, you should apply an all-in-one pest treatment to your pet. These treatments are pain-free for your dog. Just apply underneath their collar! Doing this will ensure you protect your dog from any pests they come across when outside.

5 Most Common Plumbing Emergencies

Let’s not beat around the bush – plumbing emergencies can be an absolute nightmare to deal with, particularly when you have young kids. If you don’t have access to water or are suffering from clogged drains, it makes childcare very difficult indeed. And, of course, Murphy’s Law suggests an emergency will always happen precisely at the worst time. With this in mind, I thought we would take a look at some of the most common plumbing emergencies experienced by parents with young kids – let’s take a closer look.

Blockages
When you are busy looking after young children, it’s easy to forget to care for your drains properly. Food goes down the sink and congeals. Soap suds and hair end up being washed down the plug hole in your bath. And your kid, inevitably, will learn how much fun it is to flush inappropriate materials down the toilet. If any of these scenarios arise, and you notice you are having difficulty draining water or flushing your toilet, get help as soon as possible. According to  Alexandria plumbing experts, while most blockages will be easy to remove, if you leave them too long it can result in significant damage, including raw sewage backups.

The leaking tap

On the face of things, a simple leaking tap doesn’t seem like much of an issue. But unless you fix it, it’s going to end up costing you an astonishing amount of money over time. A leaking tap can waste anything up to and over 180 liters a day, and cost you hundreds of dollars across the year. It’s also important to understand that leaking taps will only get worse over time, so your costs will keep on rising. Sometimes the fix is as simple as changing a washer, but anything more than that, and we would advise calling in the pros.

Burst pipes

Burst pipes tend to occur in cold weather. The pipes will freeze, then thaw, then freeze again – and it can take its toll. Any pipes that are exposed are at risk of bursting, which could lead to flooding issues, and will almost certainly cause damp problems. You will need to call in a professional unless you are a certified plumber. It may be that you have to have an entire pipe replacement installed, and might even have to have covering and pipe insulation set up, too.

Boiler problems

It’s every parent’s worse nightmare – no hot water to keep your children clean. And make no mistake about it, when your furnace and water heater goes kaput, it’s going to be expensive to replace. Ensure that you have some form of cover through an insurance plan. For a small payment every month you can rest assured that if anything does go wrong, you will have a quick solution – and it won’t cost you a small fortune.

Sewer spillages

Another big nightmare for parents is when one or more of your external drains blocks up, and results in sewage spilling out. Some plumbing rods might help you unblock the problem, but in many cases, you are going to have to call in a professional. The cost of a sewage backup can be enormous, and not just for the plumbing work. Sewage can ruin your garden and home, and it is also incredibly unsafe when you have small children kicking around.
