I think as parents the top thing we hope for is that our kid looks back at their childhood with fondness. After all, we want them to have happy memories to tell their future kids and grandkids about! Therefore, here is some advice you need to ensure your child has happy memories when they grow up!

Go on plenty of days out together

It’s often not the things you buy your kid, but the time that you spend together that they remember. After all, a toy will only last a few years, while a day out will create memories that will last forever. Therefore, make sure you are putting your kid first by spending quality time together as a family at weekends. Limit rows with your partner

You will be surprised how much kids can remember about rows between their parents. After all, it’s scary to see two people they love arguing in front of them. And it can often dampen their memories when they look back at their childhood. Therefore, to ensure they have a happy childhood, you need to avoid rows with your partner in front of your kid. Of course, you might have little rows with your spouse; no one gets on 24/7! But try and do it away from your child to ensure they have happy memories.

Ensure they have special birthdays

As much as buying your child a great present will fill them with joy on their birthday, it’s often how they spend the day which will create a lasting memory. Therefore, make sure they have a special birthday party which they will love. You might want to arrange a family party so that they spend their birthday with their loved ones. Or you could even arrange a fun party with their friends. You could do an activity such as bowling or laser tag. And you could even contact the venue to see if they do kids birthday parties. That way, you can all enjoy the cake at the center without having to go back to yours! It will definitely leave happy memories for your child!

But if there isn’t, consider using larger rooms such as your living room. Also, consider where you intend to be while the sleepover is occurring. Once you’ve chosen the right room, you should then consider how to make it more appropriate for the sleepover. There needs to be a comfortable place for your child’s guests to sit and sleep. You may need to buy air beds and sleeping bags beforehand to do this.

You could also buy kids bean bags, extra pillows and blankets to provide additional comfort too. Try to make as much room as possible by pushing back your furniture. You should also remove anything that could get accidentally broken before the sleepover begins too.

Create invitations

While some parents seem them as unnecessary, invitations are a fantastic idea for your child’s first slumber party. They can provide vital information which can be useful not only to your child’s guests but to their parents too. The more details you can provide beforehand, the more comfortable the parents will feel in letting their children stay over. So ask your child to help you choose a sleepover invitation design and fill it with plenty of relevant information.

You should include the date of the sleepover and what time it is going to begin. Stating a pick-up time for the following day can also be useful. Your address and contact details should be clearly stated on the invite, should the parents need to get in touch. If you are providing food at the sleepover, it can be worthwhile to mention this on the invite too. Set a light’s out time

When your kid’s friends have settled into your home, let them know when the light’s out time will be. Explain that once the lights are out, you don’t expect to hear loud music, talking or laughing. As it get’s closer to light’s out time, give them a quick reminder that they only have 10 minutes left with the lights on. This can be the perfect time for them to get into their pajamas and use the bathroom too.

Snacks can help make your kid’s first sleepover even more enjoyable. So you need to start thinking about what food and drink options you can provide. Mini-pizzas, popcorn and chips and dips are fantastic choices that most kids will gladly eat. But you can find plenty of exciting snack recipe ideas on blogs or in cookbooks if you want to create something different. Keep in mind any food allergies that your child’s friends may have and avoid any ingredients that are too spicy. The last thing you want is to be dealing with an allergic reaction or upset stomachs.

Make sure you place a table in the sleepover room before everyone arrives where you can place your snacks and drinks. Try to serve the food early, particularly if you have sugary snacks and drinks on offer. Serving these just before bedtime could leave you with a house full of kids on a sugar rush. This can make it difficult for everyone to get some sleep. Serving heavy meals too late can also result in sickness, which can also put a downer on the night. The Clean Up: Steps To Take After The Worst Has Happened

We don’t like to think about disaster striking our home. Apart from putting the relevant precautions in place, we tend to put it out of our minds. But if the worst does happen you will need to act quickly. So it’s useful to have some steps in place to ease the burden.

Flood

In the current eco-climate floods seem to be increasing. Householders are spending thousands each year to protect their properties and families. But if disaster strikes and your home is flooded, there are several steps you should take regarding the clean up.

  • Always take precautions where water is concerned, to avoid electric shock
  • Contact an expert for a quote on the price per square foot to fix water damage
  • Contact your insurance company
  • Remove furniture, furnishings and other clutter
  • Scrape up as much mud from floors, ceilings and walls as possible
  • Salvage as many appliances as possible and wash and dry them quickly
  • Dry wooden furniture outside after removing drawers
  • Dispose of any food exposed to water

Depending on the severity of the flood, it may be some time before you can redecorate and live in the house again. It will need to be completely dried. This process should begin as soon as possible to avoid structural damage.

Fire

A fire in your home can be terrifying and life-threatening. Once the fire is under control, and your home is deemed safe to enter again, the cleaning can begin.

Kids Will Be Kids – Get Them A Winter Wardrobe That Survives The Season!

Before you become a parent, you hear people say things to new and relatively new mums, and you just smile and nod. Things like “they learn so fast, don’t they!” and “she looks just like you.” And if you’re not really paying attention, it just sounds like standard stuff one woman says to another. Another example is “they get so big so soon!” and it’s easy to be cynical. Just looks like another tiny human to me, mate, honest.

Of course, these are things that all new mums hear so often that they kind of just let it wash over them. But when you are a mum you learn for yourself pretty swiftly that yes, the growth rate is like something from a sci-fi movie. It seems like only yesterday, a small pot of strained carrot was a meal for your little star. Now they’re eating you out of house and home. No wonder they’re getting bigger!

When you’re an adult, the time sometimes comes that you realise clothes wear out. Those trusty jeans that survived trips to the park, DIY and more, they no longer preserve warmth nor dignity. They need to be retired. For your kids, clothes often don’t get to that point.

Hand-me-downs often become hand-me-downs not because you don’t have the money to buy new. It’s more because when you buy them, they fit. A couple of months later? That cute summer dress might work as a summer top.

But when it comes to clothes for kids, the one area where you can’t skimp is in the winter wardrobe. A warm winter coat needs to be durable, waterproof and capable of holding a child who may well be a different size by the time spring has sprung. You might get a second winter out of it, but these are clothes that need to look good and perform a function. You need to be ready to pay what it takes to get the right ones.

Make Sure They’re Age Appropriate

As a parent, your first priority is always going to be practicality. If your child were given the family credit card and let loose in a clothes shop, they’d come back with a lot of things they liked the look of. When it came to actually keeping the rain out, or staying warm, it’d be a different story. But at the same time, there needs to be a balance.

Who are we kidding? It’s still fun when you’re 30.

Most kids – well, most people, really – would rather ask for forgiveness than seek permission. So by the time you would advise them to keep their good clothes good, it may already be too late. This is especially true for winter clothes, which may have to deal with heavy rain and snow. And where rain and snow come, mud and slush follow. Often on the coat you just spent a week’s wages on.

Make Sure They’re Easy To Wash

If something is going to be worn often by a kid, then it is also going to spend a lot of time in a washing machine. Often, during the winter, it will also see some action in the tumble dryer. This means that your child’s winter clothes need to be ready for that kind of routine. It is not a good idea to buy a coat that needs to be washed on its own or one that can’t be tumble-dried. So before you buy it – certainly before you let children wear it outside – you need to check washing and drying instructions. That’s certainly something you don’t want to find out too late.

Being a new Mom is incredibly hard. There is no denying that. After 9 months of playing house to a living, breathing and kicking little-person, your body can feel alien after the birth. It takes a long while for everything to deflate a little and although you might just want to bounce back into shape, finding time could be a challenge. You may not want even to think about a workout regime for months, but if you do, there are some great resources available to you to make it work.

  1. Plan your workouts

Home workouts are going to be a blessing during this time. If you have a kettlebell or a skipping rope then squeezing in a gentle workout during nap time is going to be much more worthwhile. An excellent way to maximize your results when you only have a short amount of time is to know exactly what you’re going to do; even if you don’t know when! If you haven’t worked out your legs in a while, then schedule that to be your next routine. Be kind to yourself and take it gently.

  1. Wear your athleisure gear

One of the best and easiest ways to feel motivated for a workout is to change into the correct outfit. It sounds strange, but it really works. When you get changed in the morning, put on your yoga pants and a comfortable sports bra. You’ll feel ready for anything and if you do get the chance to workout that day – you’ll be more than ready!

  1. Know when it’s time to relax

This is crucial. You may want to get back into your size 10 jeans for that wedding you have to go to, but too much pressure will stress you out and be bad for the baby. There are so many lovely blogs online that you can browse when the baby is asleep, thebabytrend.com has some great articles that will amuse you. It’s important during this period that as well as keeping your body fit and healthy, you are also mindful and calm.

  1. Don’t be too hard on yourself – you have a newborn!

If you don’t get to exercise and pump the iron for a few days, well, that’s absolutely fine. You have plenty of time to settle into a gym routine, and it’s important that you stay chilled about it all. If you’re lucky enough to have a partner or a friend who can watch the little one for 30 minutes while you go for a run; that’s great! But if you don’t, don’t panic. Everything good will come in good time.

  1. Try something brand new

If you have never tried yoga or Pilates before, now is the time. Some people worry that they’ll hate it because it’s not ‘proper’ exercise. But trust me, it’s not easy! You’ll be stretching out your body like never before and it’ll do wonders for your back. Give it a go; you might never look back.

How You Can Encourage A Healthy And Active Life For Your Children

We hear about it all the time these days. Obesity is becoming a huge problem and more so in younger children. This is because younger children are developing bad habits when it comes to their diets and activity levels. That, and the advanced technology that has become at their disposal. More and more children are spending less time outside and more time glued to the television and computer games. Team that with an unhealthy diet of junk food and chocolate and they are on a one way journey to bad health in the future. However, it doesn’t have to be that way.

It is so important to teach children about good healthy choices from a young age. Be that not giving them the option of unhealthy things or just encouraging them in different ways. The power lies with us, the parents. So I thought I would share with you a few ways that you can encourage a healthy and active life in young children and beyond. Hopefully establishing good habits for the future.

Healthy diets

Your diet is one of the leading things that can cause you to become overweight. If you, or your children, are gorging on junk food each day. Not getting a good intake of fruit and vegetables, then you aren’t doing yourself any favours.

Weaning

One of the first ways we introduce young children to food is through weaning. At the time, your child doesn’t know that they dislike anything green. They are curious to the new textures and tastes that they are about to experience. But, many parents don’t take advantage of this. The thing is, a child has to try something at least eight times before they can make a conscious decision of whether they like something. Especially at this age. If they spit it out once many parents assume they don’t like it and never offer again. But the chances are the next time they will eat it. The issue is we set a lot of the habits from this age. Thankfully with the introduction of methods like baby led weaning, it’s easier to help our children experience new foods.

Eating as a family

Another great way to encourage good eating habits from a young age is to eat as a family. Serving up one meal helps diminish any risk of fussy eating in the future. It enables you to lead by example. Most children will try something new or eat their meal if they are surrounded by others doing the same thing. Plus it is a great opportunity to spend some quality time together bonding. Eating a meal as a family is something families don’t do enough of. But it’s a great time to reconnect with one another.

Try and not make a drama out of food or meal times

Finally, when it comes to food and trying new things try and not make a drama out of mealtimes. Easier said than done when your young child is refusing to eat a lovingly prepared meal. Just accept that there will be good days of eating and bad days. But being consistent with healthy options is key for good habits to be developed in the future.

Getting active

Being active is another thing young children today don’t do. Smartphones and games consoles are far more appealing. Too many times you will hear about children residing in their bedrooms playing video games non stop. While technology is great and it’s important to encourage healthy use of it, it is also vital to ensure that children remain active. This means getting outdoors and burning off energy the old fashioned way.

Have active family days out

Again sometimes the best offence is to do things as a family. So enjoy active days out by going on a hike, heading for a walk in the local woods, or just playing with a ball at the local park. Sometimes the chance of spending quality time together is enough to entice a child from their beloved tablet. To do something fun and active for a change. On the more serious side a good level of fitness is vital for good health in the future.

Encourage extracurricular activities

Another great way to encourage a more active lifestyle is to enrol your children in some after school clubs. Or extracurricular activities on the weekend. You will find that there is literally a class for anything, so you are bound to find something your child will take an interest in. From gymnastics for preschoolers to soccer and baseball practice there is something for everyone. Many times your school will offer such clubs. But researching online will often unearth some great local clubs. It’s also another fantastic opportunity for your children to socialise with other children. Allowing them to make some friends outside of the school environment.

Listen to what your child is interested in

Finally, it might be hard to stray away from the dream you have for your child but you need to ensure you listen to them. You may want them to be the next tennis star or football hero, but they may have other ideas. The last thing you want to do is force a more active lifestyle on your child. This could cause rebellion in the future. So make sure you listen to the things they will like to try and ensure you encourage that wholeheartedly.

Drinking plenty of water

The last thing to consider is the amount of water your child drinks. We can be too easily strayed towards cordial drinks or sugary alternatives, but in the long term these are no good for young children.

Avoid sugary drinks

Try and ensure you stay away from the sugary drinks alternative or diluting water with flavours. This develops a taste to your child that will be difficult to break away from as they get older. Especially as most schools offer just milk and water as drink options now.

Added benefits

There are some great added benefits to drinking water. Not only could it improve the mood of your child but it could also help them sleep at night and increase their energy levels. In a good way. Water is a great detox, even for children, so try and encourage a decent water intake from an early age.

Working out routines

When you’re a parent, you tend to focus your attention on getting your child into a routine. But it’s actually incredibly beneficial to adopt a regime yourself. Your body has an internal clock. If you get into a routine of going to bed and getting up at the same time each day, your body adapts to these timings. This means that you shouldn’t struggle to get to sleep when you get into bed. It may also make you feel more refreshed in the mornings. Once you’ve got your children into a routine in the evenings, take steps to establish your own. Give yourself a couple of hours each night to relax once the kids are in bed, and then get your head down. It may take a few days to get used to a new sleep pattern, but you’ll soon reap the rewards.

Enjoying you time

When you’re a mom, your main priority is your kids. However, it’s essential to have some time to yourself as well. Everyone needs a little time for rest and relaxation, especially if you’ve been up in the night or tearing around after a toddler. Schedule some time out once the kids are in bed or arrange an outing during the day. You could ask your parents or a sibling to babysit while you have an indulgent facial or catch up with friends over lunch, for example. It’s important to have a break from mommy duties now and again.

Getting into the outdoors

If you’ve not been out for a few days, you can get cabin fever. It’s beneficial for both your mind and body to get out and about and enjoy some fresh air. Take the kids to the park to let off steam or go for a walk or a bike ride. Being in the outdoors can help you to clear your mind, and it’s nice to have a change of scenery. Alternatively, if you can get a sitter, take the opportunity to go for a walk or a jog. Exercise helps to reduce stress and anxiety, and it can also help you to sleep at night.

Creating a beautiful bedroom

Many of us look forward to the moment we can turn off the lights and climb into bed each night. If your bedroom is a peaceful, tranquil retreat, you’re more likely to sleep well. If your room is a mess or you have light streaming through the window, this can make it difficult to sleep. Try and take steps to turn your room into a haven. Go for soothing colors for the walls and de-clutter. Hang blackout blinds or thick curtains, and make sure your bed is supportive and comfortable. If your mattress is on its last legs, research memory foam mattress toppers. Mattress toppers can prolong the life of your mattress and make your bed more comfortable. Light some candles, put some calming music on and scatter throws and cushions to create a cozy vibe. Try and avoid taking phones or laptops to bed with you.

Getting things off your chest

Do you struggle to get to sleep because your mind is racing and you can’t seem to shut off? If so, make sure you get things off your chest before you go to bed. If you’re thinking about things or worrying, you won’t be able to get to sleep. It may help you to call a friend for a chat or speak to your partner.

Running a bath

Before you hit the hay, run a hot bath and enjoy half an hour to yourself. Close the door, turn the taps on and play some music. Being in the water will make you feel more relaxed, and it will also prepare your body for sleep. When you get out of the bath, the temperature drop mimics the change in temperature from day to night. This encourages your body to wind down, so you should find it easier to nod off.
