How To Pick Up The Pieces, Whatever Mother Nature Throws At You

We’re all proud of our homes, to a greater or lesser extent. Certainly, we’re all defensive of them, even if we’re not at a Martha Stewart level of housekeeping. The more effort we put into keeping them looking sparkling inside, though, the more reward we will get. And we can do a lot just by following simple rules. No shoes in the house, don’t pour anything thick down the sink, that kind of thing. Follow these, and your family home should be in good shape.

But then there are things that happen to our homes just because. There’s nothing we can do to stop these problems and all we can do is protect the property from damage. You can control what comes into your house, and what you put out of it. The one thing you can’t control is what goes on outside. Climate, weather and environmental factors are there, and will be there whatever you do. So you need to look out for problems they may cause.

If You Live In A Hot Climate

sun-flower-1536088_1280Link

A home in a hot climate is something that a lot of people prize above all others, but they don’t come without their problems. It is during the hotter months that a home is more prone to pest infestations. These infestations can run the gamut from large rats and even raccoons to something as small as termites or wasps.

Infestations can be attracted by something as simple as incorrect storage of garbage. Always make sure bags are not split, and that garbage cans are kept well away from the house. Additionally, perform a twice-yearly check for signs of infestation: droppings, eggs, structural damage.

If You Live In A Cold Climate

Homes are built to last, but the problem with any building large enough to live in is that there are stresses involved just to keep them standing. And when you apply extremes of temperature, the materials involved can expand and contract. Eventually, this can tell and can create gaps where there should be none.

snowflake-554635_1280Link

If you live somewhere that gets snow often, it can be even worse than that. If snow lies on the exterior of a building, the cold contracts the materials while the water caused by it melting can weaken them. Before long you can end up with cracks that need treating. Speak to an expert if you see signs of water ingress in your rooms.

If You Live In A Rainy Climate

water-815271_1280Link

Although homes are built with external factors in mind, it’s a fact of life that problems can build up over time anyway. You can’t fight nature. In a four-season climate, which sees plenty of rain, the soil expands and contracts over time. This can affect the foundations of the home and cause serious structural damage if left unchecked. Speak to foundation drainage repair experts if you’re finding cracks or bowing anywhere in the home.

It’s worth noting that, even if your home has been built relatively recently, these issues can still occur. While due care will have been taken to protect them against it, weather happens every day. Over time its impacts accumulate – so it doesn’t matter how strongly your house is built. You still need to keep a firm eye out for any signs of damage, and get them fixed as they occur.

Don’t Make These Mistakes When It Comes To Technology And Your Family

Over the last decade, technology has taken over our lives. In fact, you will struggle to find a family in your neighborhood who don’t own at least one phone and tablet. In fact, more kids than ever have their own devices before they are even 10! And while it’s important to embrace technology, we need to be very careful. Therefore, make sure you don’t make these mistakes when it comes to technology and your family!

Not filtering their content online

As much as the web can have some benefits for kids, it can open them up to some dangers. After all, it’s so easy to search for something, and inappropriate sites can pop up. Therefore, you need to make sure you are filtering their content online. The best way to do this is to install some kid-friendly software on their devices so that they won’t be able to get on inappropriate sites. It will also record what they are searching for so that you can ensure they aren’t talking to strangers online. Also, as we discussed previously, you can call your broadband provider who will filter search results for you.

Internet Do's and Don'ts.

Internet Do’s and Don’ts.

Not investing in high-speed Internet

With so many different kinds of devices, it’s normal for several to be running at once in your home. But it leads to internet woes when they all start running at a slow speed. After all, the kids start moaning that they can’t do their homework. Therefore, when you are choosing an internet package, you need to invest in a high-speed option. That way, you won’t have to worry about how many devices are connected to the web at one time! You can find packages here which will fulfill your family’s technology needs!

Not restricting their use of technology

It’s so important that you are making sure your family is not spending too much time on the net. There has been so much research which has shown the damaging effects of too much technology on a child’s mental and physical health. And school work can be affected if they are spending too much time with electronics. As this feature explains, they can lose their ability to focus and problem solve which can affect them in later life. Therefore, make sure you set some rules when it comes to using technology and stick to them. You might want to limit them to an hour after school. That way, they will still have time to do their homework. Also, make sure they are involved in extra activities outside of school. If they are part of a class, they will have less time to be on their devices at home!

Not using them in a communal area

A lot of issues start with technology when it’s used behind closed doors. Kids take them to their bedroom and parents are not aware of what they are up to. Therefore, it’s so important to make a communal area for your family to use the net. For example, if they use devices in the living room, you can keep an eye on what they are up to!

cell-phone-1245663_1280Pixabay

And be careful about spending a fortune on the latest gadget for your family. Phones and tablets are constantly being updated which means your kid might not want to use it as it’s out-of-date in less than a year!

The first week of your baby’s life is a very important one. You will need to keep a close eye on them to make sure that they continue with good health. But you will also need to help them settle into their new home. So what should you do in this crucial first week? Here are some ideas that can help you all adjust to life as a family.

The Transition Home

Taking your baby home is a very exciting time for parents. But there are some things you need to remember to make sure the transition goes smoothly. Firstly, be sure to pack seasonal clothes for your baby in your overnight bag. If it is winter, you will need plenty of thick baby grows and blankets so that your baby doesn’t get too cold on the way home. You should also consider the clothes that you will wear. You may still be in some slight pain and discomfort, so make sure you have loose-fitting clothing to help keep you comfy.

Baby’s First Car Journey

If you are taking your baby home in your car, you will need to make sure that the auto is kitted out appropriately. Firstly, you will need to have the correct car seat for your baby to sit in. In fact, it is a legal requirement to have a suitable seat fitted for infants. Even if it is just a short drive from the hospital, you will still need to place your baby in a seat for safety reasons.

Be Prepared For Frequent Feeding

Your baby’s stomach will be tiny. He or she will need to be fed small amounts frequently rather than infrequent large feeds. So you will need to be prepared to be ready to feed whenever your baby gets hungry. Even though your newborn will be feeding a lot, you should expect your new baby to lose a bit of weight in the first few days. You shouldn’t worry about this weight loss though as long as you are feeding your baby whenever it is hungry.

Midwife Visits

When you leave the hospital, you will be put in touch with your local midwife. She or he will come and visit you most days during your first week at home. This is to check up on your and the baby, and to make sure that you are both doing well. The midwife will also help you get used to breastfeeding. They can also tell you everything you need to know about bottle feeding. Every Time your midwife visits, they will weigh your baby to make sure that it is growing as it should be. If you experience any problems with your newborn, you should let your midwife know as soon as possible. You will also be given your midwives contact details in case you ever need to get in touch about an emergency.

Don’t Plan Too Much

It is important to relax during your first week home with a newborn. You will need to give you and your partner chance to adjust to your new lives as parents. You will also need to adjust to a life with not much sleep! So it is very important that you don’t plan too much to do during this first week home from hospital. The best thing you can both do is to put your feet up and enjoy spending time with your new bundle of joy. If your friends and family want to meet the new baby, encourage them to come and visit you at home. This will make things a lot easier for you, as you won’t have to leave the house so much.

Commemorate The Birth Of Your Child

Most parents take lots of pictures of their newborn once they get home. After all, they don’t stay a newborn for very long at all! Some parents like to hire a professional photographer to take some shots of their baby. For an example of the kinds of photos that photographers take of newborns, you can view at Silver Bee Photography. Some parents also like to buy special personalized ornaments to commemorate their child’s birth. For instance, you could buy a pretty silver figure of a bunny with your child’s name and date of birth inscribed onto it.

Check Your Baby’s Nappies

One thing that it is important to keep an eye of in the first week or so of your baby’s life is the content of their nappies. If you are breastfeeding, you should expect about five wet nappies a day. However, if you feed your baby on formula milk, you should expect about ten wet nappies a day. You should keep a track of your baby’s poop and pee schedule. This is because a doctor might want to know about how your baby’s habits. If you do keep track of their schedule, it will also help you realize if there is ever anything wrong with their digestion. If you ever notice any blood in your baby’s urine or bowel movements, you should contact a doctor immediately.

Get Help If Needed

If you ever feel overwhelmed with your new baby, there are always plenty of people who you can reach out to for help. Ask your family and friends if you ever need any help with the housework. You should also seek help if you notice a drastic change in your moods and emotions. If you ever feel depressed, speak to your midwife. She or he will be able to put you in touch with someone who can help you.

Getting Online: Knowing What Kind Of Internet Connection You And Your Family Need

Technology

Technology

We’ve all been there. Five minutes until an important deadline and your internet cuts out. Your hard work goes to waste as you get marks deducted from your assignment for late submission or end up having to have a lengthy conversation with your boss as to why that piece he’d asked for wasn’t on his desk by 5. Then there’s other things. Trying to download a song or film and your server is suddenly slower than a tortoise. You’re right in the middle of a dramatic argument or a deep conversation when “page cannot be loaded” stretches across your screen. Internet woes might be a first world problem, but they’re still frustrating and can throw a spanner in the works of your day.

Find A Reliable Internet Supplier

The key to bringing these problems to an end is to find a reliable and effective internet supplier. Certain companies are notorious for dodgy signals, days without service due to technical problems or bad signal in certain locations and areas. Others such as SuddenLink.com are renowned for reliable service and have great consumer feedback. Before signing any contract, check out customer reviews of the supplier. Contact the supplier themselves to check how their signal fares in your area.

Consider The Price

As the age old saying goes: you get what you pay for. If an offer sounds too good to be true, it might be. You’re not going to get top quality broadband for pence a month. However, this doesn’t mean that you should head straight to the most expensive package deal. Remember that you can always barter with companies. Many will be able to price match if you find the same connection for a lower price. Use price comparison sites and root out the best deals. Then challenge the main companies to give you a competitive price.

Know Your Stuff

Know what kind of internet you require. Yes, there are different types. There are standard connections and fibre optic connections. Different packages offer different speeds. Before you contact anyone, work out what will best suit your needs. How many people are in your home? What are they using the internet for? Are they only checking in on Facebook and tweeting the odd message here and there? Or are they engaging in more intense usage. For example, downloading films and music or playing online games? Once you’ve worked out what you need your internet to do, speak with a professional advisor. They’ll be able to recommend the best types of broadband connection for you.

Child Block
If you have little ones, you don’t want them stumbling over certain darker parts of the internet. There’s a lot out there that little eyes do not need or want to see. Check that your provider can offer child block or protected surfing. This will block certain illicit sites for being loaded. You can have these blocks put on between certain hours or over the whole day. This will keep everyone safe and happy on the net.

Tips On How To Give Your Laundry Room A Fresh Spin

Give your laundry room a fresh start

Give your laundry room a fresh start

Photo from: Flickr

Ok, so doing the laundry may not be a luxurious task but that doesn’t mean we can’t take pride in our laundry room. And if yours is a chaotic mess now is the time to take charge of it and turn it into a functional and pretty space. With everything more organized in the laundry room, the chore is less likely to be a bore. The more efficient your space is, the more quickly you’ll get the job done. Below are some ideas on how to create a super space you can launder in style.

If you have space, it’s a good idea to create a laundry room. This means your fresh washing is kept away from the cooking area and can be dried and folded in this extra space. The best laundry rooms feature a washing machine, dryer, and sink for hand washing. They also include and an array of beautifully designed shelving and storage units. Also, make sure to design the room with lots of counter space, so you have plenty of room for folding. Butcher block tops work really well in the laundry room. If you are looking for some inspiration, check out http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/the-worlds-most-beautiful-laundry-rooms-229078 for some great photos of super swish

laundry rooms.
Choose a stylish faux tile or wood print vinyl flooring for this room. There will be spillages and leaks, so there is no point investing in too expensive a floor. Vinyl is a great choice as it is practical, durable and easy to clean. Color wise choose something fresh and stylish. White and duck egg blue are a beautiful combination for a laundry room, as is yellow, gray and olive green too. If you need some quick fix design ideas that you can use in the laundry room, take a look at my blog post right here.

Storage wise keep all your detergents and stain removers in high up cupboards away from eager children’s hands. You can take a look here http://www.cleanhappens.com/collections/laundry for some ideas on what kind of products to fill your laundry room with. On the lower shelves, you can store extra bales of white towels on any extra bed linens. Also use any free space under the countertop to keep three separate laundry baskets. One for whites, one for colors and one for darks. Keep a smaller linen basket for your delicates. Keep hand soap and hand lotion by the sink and create a special tray filled with all your alternative stain-removing ingredients. These can be anything from baking soda to vinegar and toothpaste to lemon juice. Write a small label for each bottle saying what type of stains they get out. This way if anyone else (read teenagers or husband) is in charge of the laundry, they’ll know what to. Check out this website http://www.savorylotus.com/5-tips-to-remove-laundry-stains-naturally/ for ideas on getting stains out of clothes. Use pretty glass containers to keep everything from pegs to spare buttons in, and also have one for lost socks. Any miscellaneous socks can be thrown in here and checked and matched every two weeks. If the sock doesn’t find a soul mate after this time, it goes in the bin. Other things you may want to store in the laundry room are your ironing board and vacuum. But don’t just shove them in there. Think about designing a cupboard which can be used for the vacuum with a hook inside the door to hang the ironing board on too.

Keeping everything neat and tidy and a little bit stylish in your laundry room will make the tasks feels a little less tiresome. And once you have established a special place to get the sorting, washing, drying and folding all done in one, your time will be used much more efficiently.

A Guide To Make Your Kid’s Halloween Party A Raving Success

Are you looking to throw your kids a cool halloween party this year? Look no further! Halloween parties are perfect for kids and can be so much fun. This guide will help you to make your kid’s party a raving success:

Come Up With Costumes In Advance

Come up with the costumes as far in advance as you can. The costumes are one of the main things that make the party, so really put some effort into your kid’s costumes. Make sure they get a say in what they want to be. You can either buy them ready made, or make them yourselves. Making your costumes allows you to get really creative and make something seriously spooky. Make sure you give plenty of notice for everybody else to sort out their costumes too.

Give Out Cool Invites

The invites are the first thing that set the tone for the party. Make sure they convey the style of the party, and you include all of the important information. There are lots of halloween invitation ideas out there. Again, buy ready made or make them yourself. You’ll save yourself lots of hassle and time if you find a good place to purchase them from.

Use Decor To Set The Theme And Tone

Your decor is going to set the theme and tone for the night. Make sure you take your time with it. Get as creative and detailed as you can. It’s going to make a huge difference! You could even hide spooky surprises in cupboards and behind doors. Just make sure it’s age appropriate for the kids who will be attending.

Create Spooky Snacks

Make sure your snacks are spooky too. You still want everything to look edible, but you can get creative. Make bloody hotdog ‘fingers’. You can even just decorate some cakes and cookies with spiders and other ghoulish things.

Make A Playlist

Make a halloween playlist. There are lots of spooky songs out there that you can include. However, feel free to put some regular songs on there too.

Come Up With Games

Kid’s parties are all about the games. There are lots of halloween games you can play. Why not have a best costume competition too? This will ensure everybody puts effort into what they are wearing. You can play regular games, such as pass the parcel or musical statues. However, there are halloween style games you can play too. Instead of pin the tail on the donkey, how about pin the wart on the witch? You can also bob for apples, and make up your own games. Bear in mind that kids of certain ages will also want to do their own thing. Don’t include too many games.
Make sure you have a clear outline for your party too. You should have a schedule, so that everybody knows when the fun starts and finishes. It isn’t fair on parents otherwise, and some kids might not turn up because of it. Use these tips and it’ll be one to remember!

Caboo Toiletries

https://youtu.be/3TY9dn2FgNk

I had the pleasure of working with caboo products and I am happy that I did. Check out my review on the items below.

I received the caboo review pack, which included baby wipes, a 4 pack of toilet paper, and facial tissue. I was surprised at how much I loved the product. I’ll go over some of the pros and cons of the products below. First let me state that these products are made from 100% bamboo. According to their website, “Global toilet paper use takes 27,000 trees a day out of our ecosystem. Replacing each tree takes decades”. Caboo provides household and commercial products for all your daily needs. You can find out more about their processes on their special website.

Here are some things I loved about the products I tried.

Caboo toilet paper

Caboo toilet paper

I Love the toilet paper- this toilet paper lasted me about a week longer than my normal toilet paper (we use Charmin standard rolls). My son who is 6 likes to use tons of paper so this was surprise.

Caboo travel wipes

Caboo travel wipes

The wipes were perfect for travel and every day use- They came in a travel pack and I loved them, they are perfect for sensitive skin and get the job done with a fresh scent.

Caboo facial tissue

Caboo facial tissue

The tissues were pocket and purse size perfect for every day use.
I loved that I was able to try multiple products, I handed some of them out to my family members to get some feedback from outsiders.

Some of the things to improve the product.

Although they were long lasting the tissue was a little dry around the nose, (this was according to family member A who received a sample)
Toilet paper did not clean as efficiently as regular toilet paper (according to my husband)

Overall I definitely recommend these products. There are a few areas of concern but overall a great long lasting product which also protects our environment in the process.

If your interested in purchasing these products you can do so directly from their website or by clicking here. http://caboopaper.com/products/

Movies show us that it is quite difficult to achieve a healthy and happy family life. Just take a look at the shows of Cleavers, Cosbys, Cunninghams and many more. If your family does not fit the portrait of a happy family, do not be disheartened. There are plenty of ways on how you can turn your seemingly sad family into a happy one. This is because there are plenty of ways on how you enjoy a happy family life. These are some of them:

  • Share stories.

When your husband or kids come home, talk to them., ask them what happened in school and in their work and the most important thing of all, have a story ready for them. Tell them about what happened to you during the entire day too. But make sure that you listen intently and attentively to each and every story that they share. Talk to them first instead of just simply turn on the Tv or cook the dishes or use the phone. Keep in mind that family should always come first.

  • Spend quality time with your significant other.

When you already have children, you will find it difficult to find time for your significant other. However, you must try and have time for one another. After all, your children will get to learn more about their relationships from the relationships of their parents. That’s why you should have some time to relax, talk and connect with one another no matter how busy your life is.  Life can get difficult and sometimes you and your spouse will look for help to communicate and work together.  Here is a helpful website to get started if you’re looking for help. https://www.regain.us/start/

  • Eat together.

As they say, families that eat together stay together. There is a certain truth to that. Keep in mind that having dinner with the entire family is quite essential. This is the perfect time for each and every member of the family to connect with one another, share stories and have fun with one another. Make sure that your family will have at least four dinners together in a week.

  • Look after yourself.

Most parents spend time taking care of the other members in the family that they find it hard to find time to take care of themselves. Keep in mind that you should take good care of yourself too. If you will not do so, you will feel resentful and miserable and it will be impossible for you to provide your children the support that they need.

  • Have rituals.

Families need to have rituals. It does not have to be anything religious. It can just be about establishing weekly habits like Friday Italian meals, Saturday pizzas or an out of town trip every weekend. These rituals help to bring the family members closer together.

Managing a family is not an easy feat. There are times when everything is smooth sailing but there are also plenty of times when you feel as if you would want to be out of that family. That is just normal. But if you want to enjoy a happy and joyful family life, you should keep in mind the tips mention

Busy Moms Need “Me Time” Too! How To Let Go And Put Your Feet Up

New Mom

Moms are some of the busiest people on the planet. School runs, wiping mucky faces, cleaning up cuts and grazes, teaching lessons, tucking little ones into bed and reading stories till they nod off. Even once the kids are snoozing, there’s housework to do and school bags to pack. Never mind everything else that everyone has to do. They don’t get much “me time.” But a little time alone for relaxation and recuperation is so important. Here are a few tips and tricks to make every mom’s life a little more comfortable and easier.

Why You Need To Put Your Feet Up

Stress takes its toll on your health, both mentally and physically. Increased blood pressure can leave you more prone to heart conditions. Excessive stress can even cause stomach ulcers, rashes, and hives. Overworked people often isolate themselves. They can become lonely, depressed and can suffer from anxiety. Your health doesn’t only concern you. It involves everyone around you. Stressed people radiate negative energy and your partner, and little ones will pick up on it. So to maintain a positive atmosphere in your home and to keep yourself happy and healthy, it’s important to have some down time.

Bed Time

Sleep is an absolute necessity. Sometimes it might feel like you don’t get any at all. As soon as you close your eyes and drift off there are little ones bouncing on your bed, excited for their breakfast. So it’s important to make sure what sleep you do get is comfortable. Your mattress should be replaced every eight years. Over time it will lose its spring and start to sag. Choose a good quality mattress that suits your personal needs. Whether pocket sprung or memory foam, you need good support. It’s important for your posture and the health of your joints. Choose some soft, breathable sheets and plump pillows that you will just sink into. Have two different duvets. One lightweight one for the summer months. One thick one for winter. Set yourself a bedtime and a wake-up time and stick to it. A good sleep routine means you’ll drift off easily.

Moms Getting out

Get Out

It’s easy to neglect your extended family and friends. Nobody means to do it, but you get so tied up in your personal affairs that sometimes you’ll go months without checking up on your loved ones. Make time for them. It needn’t be days of endless communication. But pick up the phone and give your parents a call. Have a catch up with your friends over lunch. Facebook may seem like a quick fix to checking everyone is okay, but remember that things aren’t always as they seem on social media. Lots of happy posts might be covering up issues that your friend might need to offload over a glass of wine and a film. Besides, nothing beats hearing people’s voices and having face-to-face interaction. It’s much more personal and intimate. So make a date and relax. Adult conversation will see you laughing stress away.

Eat Well

The kids might want chicken nuggets, chips, and beans but that doesn’t mean that you have to have them too. We get it. Cooking separate meals take more time and effort. It’s easier just to have a plateful of what the kids are eating. But make that extra effort. Whip up one of your favorites. Thai green curry. Quesadillas. Sushi. Whatever it is that you fancy, have it.  It’s important that your little ones have a varied, well thought out diet. But remember your diet is important tool. Just because the little ones don’t want stuffed mushrooms doesn’t mean you should deny yourself them.

Book A Break

Take the children away on a fun-packed beach holiday filled with sandcastles, digging moats, lilos in the pool and pizza galore. But consider booking yourself a separate holiday too. Save up a little and take a weekend off. Leave the kids with your parents or a trusted friend and let your hair down. This could be anywhere. Check out spa packages. There are plenty of affordable ones and sites loaded with discount codes and special packages. Think about it. A nice massage and facial followed by a lovely, light lunch.  Rent out a villa for a long weekend in the countryside. Talk walks in the woods and have a hot chocolate by the fireside at night. Maybe even a music festival. Muddy wellies, tents, and rain might not sound like an ideal weekend away. But with a few friends, you’ll be laughing.

Hobbies for moms

Take Up A Hobby

Invest in a skill for yourself. There are thousands of online courses, local clubs, and groups out there. Whatever takes your fancy, it’s out there and waiting for you. Maybe learn a new language. French, Spanish, German or Italian. If you’re feeling more daring, maybe Russian, Mandarin or Arabic. Take up exercise. This will give your energy a great output. Any frustration can be vented and will dissolve as soon as you start exerting yourself. Team sports can be fun and a great way to make new friends. If you’re dedicated to a cause, start being active within it. Campaign for your beliefs. Get involved in local political groups. Voice your opinion. All of this things will give you something to do that isn’t directly linked to your family home.

Practice Relaxation Techniques

If you find yourself getting overwhelmed regularly, try out some relaxation techniques. Options are manifold. Breathing exercises will prevent panic attacks and hyperventilation. Coloring books are proving popular for adults. Indulge in this. Color in mandalas, scenic landscapes, and images from Vogue. Try out meditation. Deep breathing. Yoga and pilates.
