3 Easy Steps to Creating a Pest and Bug Free Home

Whatever your feeling about bugs or household pests, we can all agree that they belong outside. They can create an unhygienic environment, as well as literally being a pest! How annoying is it to hear buzzing or to get an itch bite on your leg? There are so many different kinds of bugs around, depending on where you live. So for many, it can feel like a bit of a losing battle. So if you have a way of knowing why these bugs are coming to your home, you can do something about it. Luckily I’m here to shed some light and help you with those reasons why.

Keep Doors and Windows Sealed

If you think of bugs like an intruder, then it can help to shed some light. If you think about how an intruder might get in your home, then it can be if there is an opening for them. If a window or door is left ajar, it makes it easier to pry it open. The same goes for bugs. If the seals on your door aren’t the best, then bugs can find their way in. In summer months this can be more of a problem, if you don’t have air conditioning. You will leave windows open to cool the house down. But with cooler months coming up, you need to think about the seals on your windows and doors. Otherwise, you might get plenty of unwanted bugs coming in for somewhere that is warm and dry.

Keep the House Clean

If there is food for the bugs, then they are likely to keep coming back. Think about things like rats or mice. Even things like cockroaches and ants. If they know that they can get scraps of food or crumbs, they will keep coming back. Especially if there is a gap for them to get in. So keeping your home as clean and tidy as it can be, can help massively. The kitchen and dining areas should be kept especially clean. As these are the areas that are more likely to have food waste and crumbs lying around. Then you can keep pests and bugs at bay. If you find you have a recurring problem then it might be worth seeking a pest controller. There are specific ones for each pest too. So think about whether you’d need cockroach, rodent or ant control, for example.

Keep on Top of Your Yard and Trash
If your yard and garbage cans are a mess, then it is just an open invitation for bugs and pests. If they are that close to your house, then the chance of then getting in is much more likely. For example, mosquitos and fleas like to have water to be able to breed. So if you have pools of water in your yard, it can entice them. So get rid of them after a rainstorm as much as you can, and clear any guttering if water gathers. Move piles of leaves and garden waste, as it can be a hug attraction for bugs and rodents to stay in.

What To Buy The One Year Old That Has Everything

When a child is born, they are immediately festooned with gifts. Everything from clothing to toys to nappies to books that neither the babies nor their parents are interested in. And the list goes on.  So it can be a chore to think of anything to get them for their first birthday. For all intents and purposes, that kid really does have it all.

Thankfully, there are still some ideas out there to satisfy this problem. What can you buy the one year old who has everything? Take a look at these ideas and you’ll soon be inspired.

A Deluxe Edition

Your normal, everyday book is no good for a one year old. They can’t read it themselves (unless we’re talking about a genius), and their parents may not have the time nor the inclination to read it to them. However, a deluxe, pop up edition of a children’s classic such as Winnie-the-Pooh or The Wizard of Oz is a great alternative. Choose one that looks as beautiful as the story within the cleverly designed pages, and you’ll have found a gift that will stand the test of time.

The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, by Stephen King, is a great book that's even better in pop-up form.

Limited Edition Shoes (That Are Too Big)

Buying outsized clothes may sound like an odd idea, but it’s actually a pretty good one when you think about it. Kids grow out of their clothes in no time, which means that buying something to fit the size they are now is a mistake. Instead purchase a pair of limited edition shoes that, by the time they actually come to fit the little one are no longer available. This means that a) the parents have something for the child to wear when suddenly nothing else fits anymore and b) those shoes will be chic and stylish and no one else will have them! Trend setting starts early…

Traditional Wooden Toys

Toys can be pretty annoying – squeaky, garishly coloured things that grind on parents’ nerves. That’s why gorgeous traditional wooden toys are just the thing. They look stunning, they work wonderfully, and the novelty factor alone makes them beloved of children (and their worn out parents) across the world. Not sure where to start looking? This shop has kids toys online for delivery.

A One Of a Kind Stuffed Toy

It’s an unbelievably lovely feeling to give a child a toy that they love forever. When you see it pop up in family photos down the years, when it’s the one treasure from childhood they choose to take to uni with them… that’s special. So why not buy something that has every chance of becoming that much loved toy for their first birthday, and start at the very beginning? A unique stuffed toy that has been made just for them is the ideal gift. There are various options if you want to go down this route. They include toys made from the child’s own (old) clothing (such as the first babygrow they wore). Also available are toys made in the child’s likeness, or even toys created from a drawing the child has made!

So, when you next ask yourself what you should buy the one year old who has everything, just remember – a little imagination (and a bit of googling) go a long way.

Home Security Made Easy With These Essential Tips

When it comes to buying a home, it can be one of the biggest purchases you make. So it’s essential to make sure you protect your assets at all costs. While you can control how others behave, you can control how secure your home is. With burglaries on the rise, it’s a sad fact that we have to be more proactive about safety and security.

key-565607_1280Image

However, you may think that adding security measures to your home can be quite costly. But sometimes making informed choices and changing a few things can be all it takes to ensure your home is protected. So I thought it would be an excellent idea to share with you some of the essential tips to make securing your home easy.

Image

Think like a burglar

This may seem like a strange thing to suggest but thinking as a burglar could highlight potential problem areas. Or perhaps some parts of your home that need extra protection. Take a long hard look at your property, on the interior and exterior, and work out the main entry points. Consider things like doors and windows, even cellars or balcony access. If there is a way to your home, then it’s a potential security breach.

Consider an alarm system

An alarm system is another potentially great tool to deter intruders or burglar entering your property. Especially if the alarm itself is visible on the exterior of your home. Sometimes even just seeing it is enough to put someone off. An alarm system can be used in different ways. But primarily you will activate it when you leave and deactivate it on your return. Often done by a key fob or secret code. However, some systems only work on the doors being opened. So it may be worth extending the sensors to things like windows as well. Some people consider adding motion sensors to the interior property. So if someone happens to gain entry, then they could potentially be rumbled when those sensors pick them up. In each case, a loud alarm will ring if it hasn’t been deactivated alerting everyone around that something untoward is happening. Some smarter systems can even ring your mobile or alert your smartphone if something has happened with your system.

Why not add a security camera system?

You may want to take the security one step further and consider adding cameras to the exterior or interior of your property. Again if these are visible, they can be enough to put off anyone even trying to enter your home. Especially because of the risk of being caught on camera is greater. Security Camera System Pro rated the best outdoor cameras around and offered some great tips and advice. A camera system could also be the difference for catching these criminals and can aid police in their investigations. These work well for bigger properties that have a lot of outdoor space and interior rooms to cover. It enables you to ensure there are no weak spots on your property.

Make practical changes to your home

Sometimes the simplest of security measures you can take are the most useful. If your windows have locks on them, make sure they are locked, and the keys are hidden away. If your doors have added security latches or top locks, make sure you use them. Sometimes it’s these practical ways of securing the home that have the biggest impact in protecting it.

Add warning signs as a deterrent

Adding visible signs to windows and doors letting people know is a great little tip. Even if you don’t have some of them in place, no one is likely to take that risk. People consider dog warnings, camera alerts or alarm pictures. All of which can work well to deter intruders.

Consider getting a dog

Sometimes a practical approach can give the best results. While dogs shouldn’t just be bought for security reasons, they can be a huge deterrent to a burglar. Dogs can bark and alert neighbours or people around them if something untoward is happening. They’re great for when you are out and about locally. However, when taking vacations, you might want to add other measures in place.

Make sure your boundaries are secure

Finally, make sure all your borders are secure. It is especially important for properties that have large gardens or outside space. Using things like high fences or gated access is an additional security measure. Often those things will be the first hurdle a potential intruder will have to cross. Making things difficult for them right from the start may put them off even attempting to gain entry.

Preparing For A New Baby: What To Buy Before Your Due Date

Are you expecting? Are you counting down the days until your due date and eagerly awaiting the arrival of your new baby? If you’re having a baby, you’re probably working through lists of things to buy. But what do you actually need, and what can wait until after the baby is born?

Newborn essentials

Even if your due date is weeks away, it’s always best to be prepared. Babies can come earlier than expected. If you go into labor earlier than planned, the last thing you want is to be panicking about nappies and sleepsuits. Once you’ve had your scans and everything looks ok, you can start planning for the new addition. It’s easy to get carried away and want to buy everything. But there are lots of things you won’t actually need.

Before your baby arrives, it’s a good idea to stock up on changing supplies and clothes. In the early days, you may feel like your time is spent changing nappies and swapping vests and baby grows. Ensure you have a stash of nappies, wipes and nappy cream in your nursery. Newborns go through a lot of clothes, so invest in plenty of basic vests and sleepsuits. You don’t need to spend a fortune on clothing. But it’s understandable to want to treat your new bundle to some special outfits. It’s an exciting time, and you may want to splash out on an outfit for them to come home from hospital or for a special occasion, like a family birthday party. If you’ve got a little boy, you may have dreamed of buying their first pair of dungarees or a hat with bear ears. If you’re expecting a little princess, you may be looking forward to buying baby headbands and colored tutu dresses.

You’ll need a car seat to transport your baby home from hospital, and for all those trips out to meet friends and family. Search online to compare models and read reviews. Take a look at sites like http://www.babycenter.com/best-convertible-car-seat for recommendations. It’s also wise to buy a changing table and a bag. You’ll also need plenty of bottles and sterilizing equipment. Many parents also choose to buy a Moses basket or a rocker for their baby to snooze.

Getting ready for birth

You may be focused on shopping for your newborn. But it’s also essential to make sure you’re ready. Pack a hospital bag in the run-up to your due date, just in case you go into labor early. You’ll need some comfortable clothes and sleepwear, a dressing gown, and toiletries. You’ll also need breast pads, nursing bras and clean underwear. You might also want to take some magazines, snacks, and some soothing music with you.

Shopping is one of the most exciting parts of preparing for a new arrival. It’s tempting to go into a store and buy everything in sight. But the truth is that you don’t need to buy everything straight away. Invest in the essentials and a few treats, and you can get everything else once your newborn has entered the world.

Detoxify and Purify Your Life With These Easy Ideas

From highly processed foods to pollution and toxins and pathogens to the stress of the modern world, there are many negative things we come into contact with every day. Because we have gotten so used to them, it can be extremely difficult to rid ourselves of these toxins. So to make a start, here’s four easy ways to begin detoxifying and purifying your life the simple way.

Dark chocolate

Carbonated drinks, certain meats and foods jam packed with sugar can all be harmful to our bodies. When we take in too many of these toxins, our body can be overwhelmed and react with feelings of lethargy, weight gain and muscle and joint pain. So if we want to detox our bodies we need to eliminate as many of these foods as possible. But then what, I hear you ask, can be our sweet treat? Well, we have the answer! Dark chocolate happens to be good for our bodies. Hallelujah! It is jam packed with polyphenols which assist in protecting the body from free radicals. This, in turn, can reduce your risk of certain cancers and also heart disease. When we talk about dark chocolate though, we are talking about raw cacao. So only buy the best!

Water Filter

We all know the benefits of drinking water for your health. But are you ever worried about whether your water is clean and healthy enough? Using a device such as the big berkey water filter will ensure your water is as pure as it can be. A filter will remove fluoride, viruses, iron, mercury, uranium and more. By removing things such as chlorine and bacteria, your water will taste and smell better. There are many toxins found in water, and a filter flushes them out. So if you want to purify your own and your children’s lives, definitely invest in a water filter.

Organic Fruit and Vegetables

The trouble with buying fruit and vegetables is that pesticides can be found in them and on their skin. If you are eating a lot of fruit and vegetables, it is always best to buy organic. Fruits such as strawberries and apples can be contaminated with pesticides, which can cause all sorts of problems. Organic food is processed in a different way by farmers. Organic farmers use only natural fertilizers to feed their soil and use mulch or crop rotation to get rid of weeds. When buying organic always make sure your food has the the USDA certified label. Organic fruit and vegetables are free of harmful chemicals. And we simply don’t know the long-term effects of such chemicals in non-organic food. Organic foods also taste better and contain more nutrient value. For a purer way of life, always opt for organic.

Keep House Plants

Our last tip for a purer life is to keep some house plants in your home. Not only will they make your home look nicer, but they also function by breathing in carbon monoxide and breathing out more oxygen for your home. They will provide purer, fresher air inside your home which is beneficial for better health. But remember that if you have pets, some plants can be toxic to them. So do your research to find the best super plants to have in your home to keep fresh air circulating.

Getting Environmentally-Friendly in the Kitchen

Environmental Kitchen

Environmental Kitchen

Wikipedia

Homes are producing a lot of waste these days. One of the most concerning areas in the average home is the kitchen. If you want to start living your life a little greener, you should make the kitchen a focus area!

Recycling

Recycling seems like such an obvious point that it’s not really worth going into too much detail about it here. You’ve heard it all before, right? Make sure you have recycling station, in the form of a bag, can, or bucket, in which recyclable materials can be placed after use.

Using things that will last

It’s amazing how many households use disposable cookware and utensils. You probably wouldn’t have thought it was that common a practice. But for a long of people, it makes more sense. They’ll buy things that they can throw away after using them to prepare and eat meals just so they don’t have to wash the dishes afterwards. This is a practice you shouldn’t be tempted to get into. It creates so much unnecessary waste. Some people may think that it saves on water, but the benefit there simply isn’t big enough to justify this.

cutlery-62852_1280Pixabay

This doesn’t only apply to disposable items. You also need to think about the general quality of the items you use in the kitchen. Dishes and pans that are built to stand the test of time will save you money in the long run. It will also reduce waste.

Garbage disposal

If you believed everything you see on TV, you’d think that everyone in America has a garbage disposal unit. Actually, the majority of homes don’t have a garbage disposal unit. A lot of people aren’t actually all that keen on having one. They wonder how such a unit could possibly do you any good in the kitchen. (They also probably don’t think much of the grinding noise!)

recycling-305569_1280Pixabay

But garbage disposal systems are actually great for the environment. Food scraps make up between 10-30% of the waste in your average household. For the most part, that’s all sent to landfills. But a garbage disposal unit turns food scraps into liquid, getting rid of it through the plumbing. It reduces landfill usage and saves on the emittances of waste transport. If you’re interested in one, why not try here?

Invest more in fresh food and home cooking

Way too many of us are buying frozen meals and using various methods of defrosting and cooking them. This results in an enormous amount of energy usage. You also have to consider all of the plastic and cardboard materials that come with these things. Not only that, but producing these meals also requires a lot of energy in manufacturing and transport. Takeout meals suffer from the same problem.

4911238308_cdf6c34ffe_oFlickr
It’s important that you start buying fresh foods and start cooking meals yourself. Not only is this healthier, but it’s also so much better for the environment. Sourcing the ingredients yourself means you can keep a close eye on the overall processes that result in your meals. If you really want to take it to the next level, you could try growing your own fruits and vegetables. Not everyone has the time for that, though!

DIY Dos And Don’ts For Every Parent

There’s a door hanging off and walls that need painting. If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Most of us have niggling DIY jobs that never get completed. Some of us love taking on household tasks. For others, the thought of getting hammers and spanners out is a nightmare. If you’re a busy parent, the last thing you need is a DIY disaster to contend with. Here are some simple dos and don’ts to keep you and your kids safe.

DIY dos

Do get involved if you have the time and necessary skills

If you enjoy doing DIY, get involved when you can. If you can complete tasks at home, this will save you a lot of money. If you have the time, the enthusiasm and the skills, give those half-done jobs a shot.

plumber-228010__340

Do get everything ready before you begin

Are you guilty of starting jobs and never finishing them? Do you want to tick off the to-do list as quickly as possible? If so, it’s always beneficial to plan ahead. Get everything you need sorted before you start. Don’t begin painting a wall if you haven’t got enough paint or the right brushes. Don’t try and fix the decking outside if you haven’t got suitable screws or a drill to hand.

Do accept offers of help

Has your dad offered to lend a hand? Have you got a brother who’s a DIY whizz? If so, take advantage of their generous offers. Getting help will save you time and effort.

Do know your limits

Are you busy all the time? Do you have limited experience when it comes to DIY? If so, think about whether it’s wise to take on extra responsibilities. If you have a hectic schedule, or you lack confidence in your skills, call a firm like Handyman Connection. There’s no shame in getting the pros to do jobs that are tricky or time-consuming.

DIY

DIY

DIY don’ts

Don’t attempt dangerous tasks

If there are jobs that need doing that are dangerous, don’t attempt them yourself. However appealing it may be to save cash, it’s not worth risking your health. Leave tasks, such as wiring, roofing, and plumbing, to the experts.

Don’t ignore professional advice

You may think that you’re a skilled amateur. But the chances are that you haven’t got the same level or expertise or experience as a professional. If you’ve had builders or plumbers in, take their advice on board.

Don’t skimp on safety

Safety should always be a priority. If you’re doing DIY at home, make sure you have the relevant equipment. You should wear goggles and ear defenders when using power tools, for example. Keep harmful chemicals and tools well away from children and pets. Make sure ladders are sturdy, and ask somebody to hold the base for extra support.

goggles

goggles

Most us have attempted a DIY job at some point in our lives with varied levels of success. If you are doing renovation work at home, or you’re carrying out a mini makeover, bear these dos and don’ts in mind. Good luck and stay safe!

You can do this now the kids are back at school!

Back to school for kids

Back to school for kids

The school holidays seem to go on forever sometimes don’t they?

You love your little ones, but they seem to be impossible to tire out at times! You spend weeks upon end running around after them or tidying up after them. You may have had a trip to the emergency room or two for when they got that bit too excited. Or perhaps a few possessions seem to have gone missing after your yearly camping trip. They can be little terrors at times. But it’s all part of the fun really.

Now the kids are (finally) back at school, you can re-engage with your normal, adult life. Pick up where you left off before the holidays and resolve to get everything done this time that you’ve been putting off all summer.

Find yourself a new hobby

It seems strange how quiet things are once the children return to school. You almost start to wonder what you did before the holidays. Your summer seems to have been taken up by the kids 9-5 for as long as you can remember now! That just means it’s time to pick up a new hobby to distract you. Perhaps you could start going to the gym or power walking with some mums that live nearby. Maybe embrace your creative side with pottery classes or life drawing clubs. Even if you just dig your nose into a good book, take the opportunity to indulge in some “me-time” during this quiet period.

Get your home looking shipshape

There is always work to be done on the house, but somehow it always seems to be pushed to the end of the to-do list. Take this time to prioritise your home. You can do some DIY yourself including painting, shelve-fitting and home decorating to spruce up the place. Make small, simple changes that can add greatly to the value of your home. Not only will you feel more content with the place you live in, you will be setting yourself up for a more financially stable situation in the future.

Rekindle the romance

Romantic picnics and day dates suddenly become nothing but a distant memory when the kids are on holiday. Actually, ever since the kids have been on the scene the romantic gestures seem to have gradually faded away. This is natural and nothing to stress about – it’s hard not to focus on your little bundles of joy when they are speeding right into you! But it is so important for you and your partner to take some time to yourselves. Remember why you fell in love. Maybe take a day trip to the beach and just walk along the sand. Maybe book a meal at a fancy restaurant; it’s been awhile since you got all dressed up. And maybe, just maybe, you can book yourself a romantic weekend getaway. Hopefully, your parents or neighbours will agree to watch the kids for the weekend. That way, you can spend a few days snuggled up in a log cabin in the middle of nowhere.

Feeling stressed? Do one or all of these things.

simple ways to destress

simple ways to destress

Unfortunately, stress is something that plagues us a generation. There is the constant feeling that something needs to be done that hasn’t been or that we’ve accidentally missed a payment. Sleeping problems are very common now. There is a unanimous struggle with “switching off”.

Sleeping and relaxing are some of the most important things you can do for your health. Take as many of these steps as you can to help relieve any stress you may be experiencing.

Fill your house with relaxing scents

Incense and candles are perfect for helping you and your muscles relax. Go for rich, woody and vanilla tones for the best relaxation benefits. Lavender is also great for relaxing too. Just have them burning as much as you can in your home or maybe even add essential oils to a bath. Burning rich oils before bed are known to help you sleep, so try this if falling asleep is something you regularly struggle with.

Sort your finances

Not feeling on top of your money is one of life’s biggest stressors. If you feel out of control, it may be time to bite the bullet, go into the bank, and sort your savings out once and for all. Pay off credit card bills, pay off your mortgage and any other outstanding payments you can afford to. Starting afresh and keeping on top of money business will be beneficial for your mental health and stress levels without a doubt!

Take up a sport

You know what I’m going to say, don’t you? Yoga is often recommended for helping people relax. Not only is it great for stretching and strengthening muscles, but it’s also great for the mind. Breathing and relaxation exercises help wick away the stressors of the day. If yoga is too slow for you, try pilates or something similar. Any exercise releases endorphins; the natural feel-good hormone.

Meditate

Meditating properly is seriously difficult. But even just sitting quietly for half an hour and trying to meditate has its benefits. Focussing on things other than money and deadlines will help you to gain perspective and clear your thoughts. There are plenty of guided tutorials online that are worth trying for beginners. Soon enough, you’ll be able to lead your practice and maybe even share your tricks with others to help them relax.

Read more, TV less

Staring at screens before bed will make it harder for you to sleep. This is a known fact! Looking at bright lights and moving objects just keeps your brain whirring around when you need it to switch off. So sleeping seems less and less possible which then makes you even more stressed! Stop TV or phone-screen time for a book before bed. You will naturally feel yourself getting more and more tired this way. When your eyelids start to feel heavy, you know it’s time for sleep.

These kinds of habits are invaluable in life. If you find something that works for you, share it with any friends that are stressed too; they’ll be grateful no doubt! Also, reading more and exercising can help any kids that have trouble sleeping well.
