Parenthood: How To Look After Yourself As Well As Your Baby

When you become a mom, you instantly shift your focus to your child. As long as they’re OK, you’re OK, right? That’s not actually the case, of course. Becoming a mom is a full-time requirement, and it’ll change your life forever. You need to make sure you’re focusing on yourself as well as your baby if you want to get through the tough times. Here are a few ways to do it.

taking care of you while taking care of baby.

Rest Often

You’re going to struggle to get rest now that you’re a mommy! You’ll be awoken multiple times during the night, so get used to the feeling of being tired! As a result of this, you need to try and rest whenever you can find a spare moment. If your significant other will take care of the baby for a while, be productive and get some sleep. Invest in a good bed with high quality and comfortable bedding, too. You need to be able to sleep in comfort if you want to recharge those batteries.

relaxing and enjoying a break

Relax!

You’re not going to get much downtime, but you need to make room for it wherever possible. It’s easy to get burned out with the stresses of parenthood, much like it is for those who constantly work. Take the time to watch your favorite TV program or read a good book. Seek help from those around you for times when all you want to do is relax.

Eating RIght

Don’t Neglect Your Health

You’re so busy taking care of your baby that it’s easy to neglect your own health. You’ll eat anything and drink anything as long it fills a corner, right? That isn’t the way to be. Take the time to eat the right things and continue to get exercise. If you keep yourself in a healthy state, you’ll be a better position to deal with the demands of looking after children.

spending time with friends and socialize

Socialize

Socializing is one of the things that most moms do after having a child. They’ll take them to baby groups where it’s easy to make friends with others who share a similar situation. Take the time to introduce yourself and try to form a bond with some of the moms. Parenthood can be quite lonely from time-to-time, so having that support network is important.

Spend Time Away

This is the one that you don’t want me to tell you, right?! It’s very difficult to leave your baby for the first time. It’s still difficult for the second or third! However, it isn’t a bad idea to spend time away from your baby. Attachment is natural for the first few years, but eventually, it can be to a child’s detriment if it gets out of hand. Most importantly, though, it allows you to get away from it all and have fun. You need that time to yourself.
You can tailor these suggestions to your own personal situation, but try and abide by them whenever possible. Your health is just as important as that of your child’s, and you’ll be better prepared for the demands of parenthood by taking care of yourself.

Can You Have A Child Friendly And Luxurious Home?

If you family is about to grow, then you might find yourself asking this question. Don’t worry though, the answer is yes. With a few adjustments and a bit of forward planning you can have the luxury you desire, while making sure your home is child friendly.

Baby Proofing

Luxury homes, can often contain valuable furniture and it doesn’t hurt to think about any possible issues that you might have in the future. Go round your home and make a list of anything that might be problematic when Baby begins to crawl. You need to think about things like open plug sockets, furniture with hard edges and anything that looks tempting for them to climb.

Becoming a parent can be expensive, but one one thing that you can’t do without is a quality changing table with raised sides. It’s vital that you know Baby will be safe when you are changing their diaper and that there is no risk of them falling onto the floor.

Keeping it your home

Just because you are about to be parents, it doesn’t mean that you can’t have a luxurious home as well. I think some people give up on high-end living as soon as they have kids because they just don’t want the hassle of trying to keep it all clean and tidy. Contrary to popular belief, children are not Tasmanian Devils and will not destroy every part of your home. Make sure that the kids have specific areas in which to spread their toys out. As they grow, be clear with them that they need to eat meals and snacks at the table. Give them plenty of storage to make sure everything gets put it away at the end of the day. Then you will be able to keep that high-end luxury look as well as having kids.

Space

If this is your first child then, you will probably be ok with space. But if you have lots of kids already, you might be concerned as to where everyone will sleep and play. If that is the case, then you need to consider an extension or renovation. This can provide you with enough room to house all the family comfortably while allowing for everyone to have their areas. Check out sites like milliondollarmakeovers.net.au. You can find some great renovation and extension inspiration there that have a luxury twist.

Luxury touches

It’s true that when you become parents, your priorities do shift, and your child becomes the first thing on your list. It’s a good idea to keep a bit of luxury in your surroundings for you too. Parenthood can be tough, and sometimes you are going to need to retreat, even if it is just for 15 minutes to regain your sanity. That’s why having a luxurious jet bath, reading nook or a balcony are so necessary. Keep these areas as only adult zones. Then you will always have a place of peace to retreat too when things get tough, just make sure one of you is watching the kids!

Everything You Need For A Suitable Family Home

If you’re looking for a home that will be perfect for your family, then you really need to take your time. There are a few things you need to have to ensure your home is as perfect as it can be for the people you love the most. Read on to learn what you need for a suitable family home:

The Right Location

Before you can say you’ve got the perfect family home, you really need to make sure that it’s in the right location. You can change everything about your family home, but you can’t change the location. This means you need to check the crime rate, visit at different times, speak to neighbours and really do your research. The right location will make a huge difference to how happy your family is in the home you’ve chosen.

Sturdy Foundations

Making sure you buy a home with sturdy foundations is absolutely essential. This should be checked over before you buy, so you’re not left with a home that could crumble and fall at any given moment.

Insurance

Insurance will protect your investment and help you if something should go wrong. Of course you need to take more measures to ensure that nothing happens, but if something does end up happening, insurance can protect your money and get you back some of what you’ve lost.

Security And Safety Measures

Safety and security measures will ensure you keep your home as safe and sound as possible. Whether you have a family yet or not, putting these in place will prepare you for any eventuality to come. It’s a good idea to install alarms and things like that, to alert you to any serious goings on. Having reinforced windows and doors is a good idea too. Security screen doors are perfect.  What you install and invest in will totally depend on your area and who you’re living with. Just remember that you can never be too careful.

Plenty Of Room For Everyone

You need to make sure there’s enough room in your family home to accommodate your entire family. Bear in mind they will grow, and as they do so they’ll need more space. They’ll also accumulate more things! Make sure you assess how much room each member properly needs so that you’re all comfortable.

The Right Layout

Having the right layout will make your home more practical. It’ll stop accidents from happening, and simply make it more comfortable to live in. You can use apps and things online to come up with a layout, or you can use practices like feng shui to see what you come up with.
Having a suitable family home is essential, whether you have a family or you’re thinking of starting one in the future. Looking out for them now will be one of the best things you decide to do. If you have any tips of your own you want to leave, make sure you put them in the comments section. See you again soon!

Amazing Tips That Will Make Your Home Move Easier

11705392445_86c98890bc_z

Moving is considered by many to be one of the most stressful things a family can go through. Even if you’re really excited about the move, packing up and clearing out is never a particularly fun task. The last thing you need is to get a lot of little things get you down during this process. Here are a few quick tips to help you and your family make the move as easy as possible.

Getting smart with boxes

The first thing people usually see when they imagine moving is boxes. Boxes, boxes, and more boxes. They can see themselves having all sorts of trouble with them. Not just with packing things into them, but carrying them around and then sorting them out once you’re at your new place. You need this move to be as stress-free as possible, so make sure you make this stage easier for yourself.

Try color coding the boxes according to what room the items in them originated from. If you want to write labels, make sure you write them on the side. Most people write the information on the top, which isn’t much good once they’re all stacked up! Consider getting see-through plastic boxes so you can see what items are inside with a quick glance. And if your boxes don’t have handles, then cut some into them.

Protecting the things in those boxes

Moving things around leaves them vulnerable to damage. This is one of the biggest worries for anyone in the middle of a move. This usually leaves people with the need to buy expensive padding for the boxes. But that’s not your only option! You can use the towels and sheets in your home for free and smart padding. Wrap them around big, fragile objects like your television before it goes in its box. And as for plates, you should get styrofoam plates. Put the styrofoam plates between the real plates for cheap and effective padding!

Getting help with the move

A lot of families get a little cocky when it comes to the move. They think that it’s better for them to save money and just get everything into their own car and move things that way. But as someone who has been through many moves, I can assure you that it’s much better to get help from experts, especially with bigger objects. It makes everything so much less stressful. It can also ensure the safe travel of your belongings, especially as they’re in the hands of professionals! Consider looking into getting help from movers!

Using your smartphone
You know there’s an app for pretty much everything these days, right? And that includes moving house! There are loads of apps out there that can help you manage your move. You can set up schedules and arrange home inventory lists. Move Advisor is one of the most popular such apps on the market right now, and it’s completely free! Of course, there are several of free ones out there, so you should consider giving them all a trial so you can pick the one best suited to you.

Bereavement And Grief: Helping Your Child Deal With The Death Of A Loved One

dealing with death and bereavement

dealing with death and bereavement

Kids will have to face the death of close friends and relatives at some point in their lives. But, hopefully, not for a long time yet. However, if death strikes in the family, you will need to be ready to support them through this difficult time. It won’t be easy, especially if you are finding it particularly difficult to come to terms with the bereavement. To give you a guiding hand, here are my top tips for helping children deal with the death or a loved one.

Answer Their Questions

Kids usually have a lot of questions after a death, especially if they are still quite young. They will want to know more about death and why their close friend or relative passed away. It is important to always answer their questions, even the most difficult ones. If you don’t know an answer, tell them. Let them know that it is a tricky subject and even adults don’t understand everything about what happens after we die or why some people die.

Give Them Plenty To Do

Don’t just stop going through life because you are overcome with grief. You should try and continue with your life as normally as possible, for the sake of your child. Make sure they have plenty of activities and things to keep them occupied. This can help to take their mind off the pain and sadness, even if it’s only for a very short time.

Remember The Person Who Died

Talking about the deceased is all part of the healing process. You should remember all the good times you had together. Sit down with your child and ask them about how they are currently feeling. You should also ask about their memories of their loved one. By sharing stories of the deceased together, you can remember all the happy times you had together. This is a great way to join together as a family to pull through a rough time together.

Understand How Your Child Grieves

You and your child might grieve in completely different ways. You might find that crying helps work through your sadness while your child might not even shed one tear. No matter what happens, don’t try and tell your child how they should be grieving. They need to figure out their own process that suits them. Likewise, don’t expect anyone to tell you how you should work through your grief and sadness.

Create A Memorial

There are lots of ways you can commemorate the death of a loved one. Some companies specialize in making diamonds from ashes. These can be used in jewelry or ornaments. You might also like to collect all your photos of the deceased person and create a collage that you can hang on your wall.  Ask your child how they would like to commemorate the death. It is important to involve them as much as possible in helping them grieve.
Work together as a family to help each other come to terms with the death. Eventually, you will all find it easier to live with the grief.

Top Tips To Make Cleaning Much Quicker

tips for cleaning

tips for cleaning

We all know just how much of your time cleaning can eat up. The trouble is, it has to be done, but sometimes there just isn’t the time. As well as trying to make more time to clean the house, what else can you do? The fact is, there are a number of tips and tricks you can use to help clean your house a little faster. Some of them apply only to small and specific items around the home. Others still are more generic, and will make a whole day of cleaning go by much quicker. If you are keen for ways to speed up your cleaning ritual, then read on. Here are some top tips for achieving just that.

Choose A Cloudy Day

Often, we clean when we are in a good mood to do so. And that usually means that it is bright and sunny outside. However, cleaning when it is sunny might actually make the whole process take longer. There are a few reasons for this. One is that you are likely to get tired out faster if it is hot. However, there are also more specific reasons that you should avoid cleaning in the heat. If you are cleaning windows, for example, you should always choose a dry and cloudy day. This is because cleaning them on a sunny day will cause the cleaner to dry onto the windows in unattractive streaks. We all know how awful that can look. Not to mention that it makes the whole job take twice as long.

Use A Robot

So we might not be living in a future paradise yet, but the fact is there are already robots around to help us. Especially when it comes to household chores, these robots might actually be quite welcome. One which you are sure to be able to trust is the vacuum cleaner robot. This makes the job of cleaning the floors so much easier. If you are someone who is tired of always having to vacuum, then this is the solution for you. Using a robot means that you can busy yourself with something else at the same time. This is likely to maybe even double or triple the amount of cleaning you can get done in one day. Take a look at these i Robot vacuum cleaner reviews if this interests you.

Clean Silver Easier
Silver can be famously difficult to get clean. However, there is a little-known method which can make the whole job a lot easier and quicker. Next time you need to polish your silver, consider using baking soda. If you think this sounds like it shouldn’t work, give it a try. First, hand wash your silver items in warm soapy water. Then, pour over a mixture of baking soda and water and let it sit for a few hours. Ideally, you should leave it overnight, just to make sure. However, even after only a few hours you should find that it is as good as new. This is one of those tricks that you will find yourself sharing with everyone.

How To Survive Baby’s First Road Trip

Whether you’re visiting a new destination or reuniting with family, a road trip is a fantastic experience. It’s a chance for your family to bond and adds some spontaneity and excitement to your lives. Yet just the thought of taking a baby on a long road trip is enough to fill many parents with dread. It’s easy to imagine continual screaming, endless traffic jams and difficult diaper changing scenarios. This fear is enough to put many parents off until their child gets a little older. This is unfortunate as a road trip is something that you and your baby can both benefit from.

So despite what you might think, your baby’s first road trip doesn’t have to be such a terrifying prospect. Take a look at these road trip survival tips to make it stress-free and, more importantly, fun.

Get the car seat right

One of your top priorities when planning your road trip is to ensure that your baby’s car seat is safe and comfortable. The last thing you want is to have an uncomfortable baby crying for the entirety of your trip. You also don’t want to be constantly worrying that your baby is in danger while in your car. Road trips require a lot of sitting, this is unavoidable. But you can make your baby feel more comfortable throughout by investing in a top quality car seat. Car seats are an essential item that your baby can quickly grow too big for. Putting your baby in a seat that is too small for them will only add to their discomfort. So even if you have one already, check to make sure it is a suitable fit. Read detailed online reviews on different styles of car seat, paying close attention to the size, safety features and comfort. You could also check out the best-selling travel system by Britax, called the B-Agile 3 B-Safe 35. These travel systems combine a car seat with a stroller, which could potentially save you valuable space in your car.

Alternatively, you could visit a baby retailer to see what their best selling car seat products are. Ask about the pros and cons of each seat and for advice on infant car safety. To put your mind at ease, it can be worthwhile to have your new car seat fitted by a professional before you leave.

Packing the car for baby's first road trip

Packing the car for baby’s first road trip

Pack the night before

Now you have your car seat in place; it’s time to start packing up your vehicle. It’s no secret that babies need a lot of stuff, so it’s best to do this the night before you set off. This might seem like a lot of effort, but it can save you lots of time and stress. In the week leading up to your departure, start making lists of items you need to buy and pack. This will make you feel more in control and prevent you from forgetting anything. You can find extensive road trip packing templates online if you need help getting started.

When it comes to your baby, buy extra diapers, baby wipes and anything else you deem essential. The last thing you want is to run out when you’re on the road. You should also consider what books, toys, and snacks you can take on your trip. Once you have everything you need, clean out any unnecessary items from you car to make plenty of room. Make sure all of your baby’s essential items are kept in a bag that is within your reach. Putting these items in the trunk could mean you have to stop and start more than you need to.

You might also want to ensure your baby has some form of entertainment which they can access easily while you drive. You could place a basket of toys next to their car seat or hang some from the roof using ribbons. Now is also the opportunity to install safety mirrors, stock up your cooler box and prepare your travel wear. This tip applies to your journey to and from your destination.

Be flexible

No matter how organized you are, your road trip can easily get disrupted and altered when traveling with your baby. The best survival tip you can use is to make your road trip plans as flexible as possible. Decide which route you want to take to your destination but also have a backup planned too. Traffic jams are not fun with a grouchy baby, so stay up to date by listening to the radio or by checking traffic apps. This will give you the chance to plan ahead and take your alternate route if you need to. When you’re sticking to a tight schedule it can be hard to be flexible. So instead of racing to your destination, give yourself plenty of time to get there. This will make your journey safer and far less stressful. Factor in time for breaks along the way, because you never know when you might need them. Your baby could get sick or feel hungry which will most likely result in a screaming fit. Look for attractions along your intended route where you can both spend time away from your car. There could be parks, cafes or restaurants you can visit.

It can be tempting to ignore your baby’s cries when you’re eager to get there. But taking breaks will put you both in a more positive mood, making your road trip more pleasant. A screaming baby can also be a big distraction which could take your attention away from the road. So even though you might be stopping a lot, it’s better to do this than put your family at risk. Having adaptable plans could also help you discover new destinations that could make your trip more memorable.

Hopefully, the tips in this guide will have inspired you to start planning your baby’s first road trip. There’s no denying that you might face some unavoidable issues along the way. But the more prepared you are, the less stressed you will be should they occur. Focus on keeping your baby safe and happy and make some memories that will last a lifetime.

Going On Vacation? Here’s Five Things To Do Before You Go

Heading away on vacation is an exciting time for anyone. The chance to relax and have some quality time with our loved ones. But the lead up to your vacation can be a stressful time. There just seems to be so much to think about and remember. Not to mention whether you have packed everything you need. So I thought I would share with you five things you can do before you go away that will hopefully take some of the stress away.

Going on vacation? Here's what to do before you go.

Going on vacation? Here’s what to do before you go.

Write a list of what you need

It is so easy to forget things when you are packing and trying to remember everything. Which is why it is a great idea to write a list. You can make a note of clothing items the whole family will need and then tick them off as you pack them away. But it doesn’t need to stop there. Writing a list could get you completely prepared for going away on vacation. You could have a list for getting yourself ready, preparing your home for going away and anything you don’t want to forget before you go. You will be completely organised and on top of things.

Keep your tickets and documents in a safe place

The last thing you want to do is lose your tickets and travel documents. So make sure you keep them in a safe place. This means passports and visas if needed, boarding passes and flight tickets, anything to do with your traveling, keep them safe. No one wants that last minute panic where you are trying to find something important five minutes before you are due to leave.

Make sure your home is secure

Many of us are too busy focusing on packing our suitcases and getting the children organised and forget about our home. But going on vacation means that we are leaving our home empty and open to any threats. All you need to do is a take a moment to think about securing your home. It doesn’t take much, but the peace of mind will be worth it.

Going on Vacation? Here's what to do before you go.

Going on Vacation? Here’s what to do before you go.

Get yourself ready

As moms, we can forget to take care of ourselves. We focus on getting the children ready, and our partners. We can neglect to take care of ourselves. So try and make some time just for you. You will appreciate it when you are on vacation. Take some time to shave your legs, paint your nails and get some nice outfits packed for yourself. The vacation isn’t just about the family but a chance for mom to unwind to.

Prepare for your homecoming

Finally, it may be depressing to think about the end of your vacation, but it’s worth to spend a little bit of time getting things ready. This might mean planning a meal ready for the day you come home. Or asking someone to come into your home with some food essentials like milk and bread for the morning after.

I hope these points have reminded you of some of the things you can do before you head out on vacation.

Why A Good Night’s Sleep Is Non-Negotiable

Sleep, along with water, is one of those things that we all know we should get plenty of. When the doctor asks us how much we’ve been getting, we nod along and mutter an answer that we think is close to acceptable. According to you at your most mendacious, you get six to eight hours sleep a night. You drink six glasses of water a day. And yes, of course, you always get your five a day and don’t drink except on social occasions.

They might seem like white lies, designed to explain a hectic lifestyle in a world that doesn’t give much time for pause. Between work, managing a household, kids and trying to have some semblance of a social life – of course, you miss a few hours shut-eye. You know you shouldn’t, that you should rest more, but like the saying goes – you can sleep when you’re dead.

maintaining healthy sleep habits

maintaining healthy sleep habits

Sorry to drop a hammer of unpleasantness on to your day, but there’s a simple truth you’re blinding yourself too. If you’re not getting enough sleep in life, then you’re going to speed towards those post-life hours all the faster. Not only does a lack of sleep impair your ability to drive and work properly, but it shortens your life expectancy by a frankly terrifying amount.

Sometimes it takes a little bit of tough love to make people see sense. If you get a handle on your sleep schedule, then your life will benefit in a variety of ways. All you need to do is follow the five golden rules.

  1. Low lighting

If you try to sleep in a bright area, you’re not going to get as much rest as you should. Try and darken all sleeping areas as much as possible. If that’s not going to happen for logistical reasons, then use an eye mask.

  1. Five hours a night is fine- but not all the time

Try and sleep for more than five hours per night at least three times a week. Aim low and try to better it. If you have a short night’s sleep the night before, try and catch a few more minutes the next night to keep yourself balanced.

  1. Sleep comfortably

comfortable sleeping

comfortable sleeping

As a rule of thumb, you need a good mattress and supportive pillows to feel comfortable. Consider any concerns like back pain, and if you need to address it, seek items that will help. Always check information before you buy; this Zinus mattress review is an example of helping you buy with all the information you need. If something isn’t working for you, return or donate it.

  1. Don’t expect yourself to sleep through

The idea of sleeping through the night is a relatively modern invention. If you need to sleep for three hours, potter around awake for an hour or so and then head back to bed, that’s fine.

  1. Don’t use sleeping tablets

sleeping tablets

sleeping tablets

They might help, but they will cause problems in the long run. Sleeping is about finding a natural schedule that works for you, not disrupting a natural process with medications. Better to go sleepless every now and again than mess with your circadian rhythm – which can take years to realign.

Now go and catch some Zs!
