There’s an idea that, in life, “the more you give the more you get” meaning that when you live in a state of abundance, whether this is with your time or money, it will return to you tenfold.  There’s a popular quote from Tony Robbins that says “the secret to giving is living” meaning the most effective way to feel happiness and improve the quality of your own life is to give back to others.  Think about it, when are you happiest – is it when you’re receiving a gift or seeing the expression on a grateful receiver’s face?

There’s a good chance you’ll have heard the saying “count your blessings”.  It’s sometimes easy to lose sight of how lucky you are.  Indeed, it’s often the case that we compare ourselves to those with more than we are – whether that’s the idea they have more money, better looks, a better relationship and so on.  Rather than focus on what you lack, it’s better to appreciate what you have, as this will attract more of the good stuff toward you.

Is A Strict Routine Really The Best Approach To Parenting A New Baby?

 

No method of parenting works as well for some as it does for others. There is no miracle solution to make any part of it easy, that’s for sure! But many parents have started to approach parenting new babies in the same way they might prefer to approach other areas of their life. Routine makes things become easier over time because you can turn those tasks into a habit. They soon become like second-nature, and you don’t have to even think about them. Best of all, the physical side of routine tasks becomes quicker and easier because it is so well practiced.

 

So what parts of bringing up baby can become routine for you as a parent?

 

Nursing

 

If only nursing were easy! It’s a natural process so many moms mistakenly believe it should just happen. But you’ve never done it before. And your newborn certainly hasn’t. Don’t think for a second that some inbuilt instinct will take over. It rarely happens that way. Like most other parts of parenting, you need time to learn this skill and plenty of practice before it becomes a routine part of your day.

A lot of new moms find they need support and coaching to get things right with nursing. And some moms and newborns never find a way to make it work. That’s OK, and it doesn’t make either of you a failure. After all, breastfeeding can be very painful, and it can be difficult for your little one to do well enough to gain a healthy amount of weight each week. Does making feeding time routine help? Yes, and no.

 

New moms know that leaving it too long before feeds can make your chest hurt. A longer nap than usual, or simply having to go to work can lead to this dilemma. Equally, offering a feed before you’re ready means little one isn’t going to get a full meal. Sometimes any baby crying can set you off! Like napping, you just have to deal with demand on this one most of the time. Getting into a routine of sitting, positioning, and comforting can help make the experience more pleasant. It can help to become more easy-going for you both.

 

Washing

 

Some babies are very uncertain of the water. Others don’t want to come out! Washing your newborn at the same time each evening can help them prepare for bedtime. This same activity works for us throughout our lives to trigger the body and mind for sleep. Making the activities in the tub routine can be helpful too. But you might be missing out on opportunities to aid development for your child if you rush too much.

The texture of bubbles and the sensation of water running over the body are important for your child to experience. Over time, you’ll want to introduce different color and shaped toys. These help with vision, attention, and the reaching response. It’s OK to mix up the things you do for play with your child.

 

As for the process of washing? Keep it gentle and warm. This is the time of day you start to notice potential problems. You might spot skin disorders and cradle cap. It’s important not to panic. Most of these are normal and can self-correct over time. Can activities performed every day support healthy development as your child grows? Yes, it can, but over time, new challenges and tasks need to be introduced to develop new skills. If you have a set time each day where you can massage your baby or help them to get moving, this can be hugely useful. There is nothing to say it will speed up the first crawl, or bring out the first word any quicker. But it does help you feel assured that you’ve spent that quality time with your baby.

Simple things like taking a walk each day can become routine. Of course, the time of day might have to change, depending on the weather and your other commitments. When your little one is a little bigger and stronger, tummy time helps to introduce your baby to the process of independent moving. It can help with rolling and crawling. It all takes practice. Should it be routine? Chances are your baby will be overtired sometimes, and hungry at others. Tick it off the list, but don’t expect 1 pm to be the best time to tackle this every single day.

 

Mom and baby groups are great ways to help you stay socially active. It also helps you to share your mom stories with others. You’ll soon hear that your worries and experiences are common to most moms. Best of all, your baby can experience social gatherings and identify those sounds as normal and comforting. Most groups are held by community nurses, midwives and other infant specialists. They can help support you through any problems. Most importantly, they can help you pick up any developmental difficulties your baby might be having. Make it a routine part of your week to attend these types of sessions.

 

Diaper Changes

 

Some moms, especially with two or more kids in diapers, tend to find it easier to change diapers at a routine time. Others prefer to wait until the diaper is full and then change it. This is far more cost-effective, but there is a worry that urine might have been in contact with your baby’s skin for too long. Redness and sores down there make a grumpy baby and this, in turn, makes you grumpy and tired! Routine checks are certainly a good idea, but it’s probably not necessary to change a diaper every time the clock changes. Find the balance that suits you both.

There are three different diaper changes. The first is the full diaper that will emit an odor telling the whole household it’s time to change it! This requires copious cotton balls, water, and wipes to clean up. You might need to add some cream to soothe sore skin in the area too. Of course, these can turn up half a dozen times per day or more. Getting your clean-up routine up to speed can be very helpful for the sensitive nose!

 

The second is the wet diaper. These become more common as your little one gets bigger. They don’t tend to smell, and often are difficult to pick up. Diapers tend to be very good these days at drawing wetness away. Still, some soreness might be evident, so don’t be afraid to use a little warm water to wash and then some soothing cream.

 

The third is the fresh diaper because you’re putting the baby down for the night, or you’re going out. You don’t know whether it needs changing, but you’re going out fresh anyway! Not every wet diaper has to be changed immediately so don’t feel guilty if you find it has become quite full of wet without you noticing. Change more regularly if your little one’s skin is sensitive to it.

We are creatures of habit, and most of us had quite strict routines before we became pregnant. We got up at the same time each morning, brushed our teeth, had a shower, ate breakfast and went to work. Even at work, we tended to do the same tasks at the same time each day. Then, back at home, we watched the same TV shows, ate the same meals on Friday nights, and enjoyed the same bedtime routine.

 

It’s important you keep up as many of your old habits as you can. A newborn can’t sleep for many hours before feeling too hungry. This will interrupt your own sleeping patterns. Still, try to start your night as you did before. It won’t be too long before they make it through the night. Then, in the morning, try to get back into your regular routine. It’s easier to do when you’re super tired because it’s so rehearsed!

 

Strict routines are probably impossible with a newborn. Still, some routines are incredibly helpful. You’ll undoubtedly pick up many new ones along the way. Others will require you to become more flexible than ever before. Which routines have helped you as a new mom?

Trying to balance your work and your life can be incredibly difficult, which is why it’s best to look for a way to work at home so you can take care of your children while making a living. Fight for your Rights! Understanding the Miranda Warning

Sure, you may watch a whole lot of crime drama. Most of us mouth out the words as someone’s being arrested on the television screen: “you have the right to remain silent, anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law”. But do you understand what that actually means in legal terms? Would you know what to do if you were wrongfully arrested? Sure, it may seem highly unlikely and perhaps it is. But it’s still a situation that many people find themselves in every day. For this reason, it’s important that you know and understand your legal rights and ensure that that are upheld. Here are a few things that you should be aware of to gain the best possible treatment should you find yourself in a sticky situation with law enforcement.

 

The Miranda Warning

 

The Miranda warning is an extended version of the line so commonly stated in soaps, TV dramas and films. In full, it has five parts.

 

  1. “You have the right to remain silent”

 

This essentially means what it says. You have the right to remain silent. You don’t have to speak if you don’t wish to. You can if you do. This is a right that is essentially irrelevant unless you decide to use it to your advantage. However, bear in mind that remaining silent when questioned on something can indicate guilt. After all, if you have done nothing wrong, what do you have to hide? This, however, cannot be used against you or as evidence.

 

  1. “Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law”

 

From the moment of your arrest, anything that you say or do can be used as evidence. Chances are that it will be. You’ve been arrested for a reason and there will be a lawyer out there forming a case against you on behalf of the plaintiff (or individual who has accused you of doing wrong).

 

  1. “You have the right to an attorney”

 

While you have a legal worker out there fighting against you, you have the right to a criminal defence attorney of your own. This individual’s role will essentially be to fight your corner; to prove your innocence. If you request an attorney, all questioning has to stop until they have arrived and you have consulted with them. If you do wish to have an attorney, state so clearly. Don’t tip toe around the subject with phrases such as “I think I might need an attorney”. Simply state that you do want an attorney and refuse to answer any more questions until one has arrived.

  1. “If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be provided for you”

 

While you may not be able to choose your own attorney if you don’t have the financial means of paying one, you can still have one assigned to you.

 

  1. “Do you understand the rights I have just read to you? With these rights in mind, do you wish to speak to me?”

 

This is where the investigation can continue. Having consulted with your attorney (if you choose to have one) you will be able to answer any further questions comfortably and confidently.

 

Actually understanding each part of this will ensure that you are as comfortable as possible in the situation and can progress knowing exactly what is going on.

4 Reasons Freelancing Is Better Than Starting A Business

As a mom with a lot of time on your hands, there are many routes you can go down for work. Of course, you could always go back to work and get a part-time job, but I think the flexibility of working from home is beneficial for parents. So, you’re left with two main ideas; start a home business or become a freelancer.

 

For me, freelancing is the better option, and I’ll explain why in the points below:

Far Cheaper For You

While running a business might generate more money, it will also cost a lot more to run. You’ve got the overhead costs to think about, which could be very high depending on what business you operate. Let’s say you run an online business from home where you sell products. You’ve got the cost of the products themselves, plus shipping costs, marketing, etc. When you freelance, you don’t really have any operating costs. At the most, you’ll pay a little bit to market yourself better and find more work.

No Employee Issues

Some people say they want to start a home business and work on their own. However, this will only happen for a certain amount of time. At some point, if your business does well, you’ll need to grow and hire additional help. This then throws up the potential for numerous employee issues. They might be unproductive and hold you back, or they could cause problems for your company. If things turn sour with an employee, they might try and sue you, meaning you’ll have to go through the effort of hiring an employment lawyer. Again, this reverts back to the first point in that it costs money. Save all these potential problems by freelancing and only having yourself to depend on.

Less Stressful

Make no mistake about it; running a business is stressful. Even people with successful companies will struggle with stress as there are so many things to worry about. Plus, add a family on top of this, and you’re pretty much living a permanently stressed life. But, as a freelancer, your job is much less stressful. You will be doing something you’re good at, and it could even be enjoyable for you.

As a freelancer, you also have more options when it comes to working. There are loads of people and businesses out there looking for freelance help. If you run a business, your options are pretty much limited to trying to find customers for your products/services. Plus, if your business fails, that’s it. But, if some freelance work falls through, there’s another option somewhere waiting to be taken.

So, if you want to step back into the world of work as a mom, why not give freelancing a go? It’s a flexible way of working that means you can stay at home and still keep an eye on any young children in the house. Plus, you can earn a lot of money once you get into the swing of things. It’ll be like a regular job, only more enjoyable and without the strict 9-5 schedule.

Save Or Invest? Money Management For Moms

Being a parent is a wonderful experience that offers many challenges, sure, but alongside them there’s a whole new perspective on life and a kind of love the pre-baby you never even thought possible. From the moment our children are born our psychology changes completely and we dedicate our every decision on this Earth to protecting and looking after them. Thus, when we find ourselves with a meaningful sum of money it can be difficult to know how best to use it for the good of your family. After all, many parents (especially new parents) are so used to living hand-to-mouth, especially when there’s so much to be paid for with the arrival of a brand new bundle of joy. The very prospect of owning a substantial sum of money can be bamboozling.

When it comes to managing our money sensibly, we’re often faced with a binary choice. Do we save or do we invest? Each has its benefits but each has its caveats. Neither is inherently better than the other, it’s simply a case of weighing up the pros and cons and deciding which option is best for your family.

 

If you save

 

If the thought of any sort of risk makes you nervous, then saving is the way to go. While saving is a safe bet it’s important to remember that not all savings accounts are created equal and that there’s still a risk (however slight) that you may lose some of your money. Fortunately, there are many options open to savers and if you’re okay with keeping your money in long term savings (over a space of years) you may benefit from a higher than average interest rate. The only trouble, however, is that you may not be able to access your money in the case of an emergency.

 

If you invest

 

Before you invest, it’s important to know that any investment is a gamble. Even an investment in a PLC with a trusted brand or off the back of a hot tip carries with it a certain risk. Stocks rise and fall and there’s never a guarantee that you’ll get out more or even the same amount as you put in. If you buy Starbucks stock then this is a fairly safe investment as Starbucks is likely not going anywhere. Nonetheless, since few huge innovations in the realm of coffee are on the cards it presents less chance for a big boost compared to investing in the pharma or tech industries.  

 

It’s always a good idea to invest in a diverse portfolio of stocks to maximise your chances of a bump and insulate you from risk.

 

If you do neither

 

Of course there’s no obligation to save or invest, although letting your money sit in your current account is the surest way to lose it slowly over a period of months or years. Keeping it in a separate account with limited access and using it only for emergencies is the best way to hold onto your money.

If all else fails, you can have the best of both worlds and allocate some of your money to savings and some to investment, although this may compromise your ability to get a high yield on your interest or make a substantial return on your investment.
