If you find that learning to cope with stress is a struggle, inevitably, thoughts turn to the concept of luck. Some people ask themselves why they have bad luck. And with various cultures using talismans to ward off bad luck, avoiding the number 13, or participating in superstitions, these are all things that may seem strange on the surface, but when we seem to think bad luck follows us around, what can we do?
Take Action
When we seem to think that bad luck is a part of our lives, it is so easy for us to sit around and think about why we have bad luck after experiencing setbacks. Naturally, there are many people who may believe they have a lot of bad luck in light of the pandemic. There have, unfortunately, been stories of family members who have buried three members within the space of a couple of weeks, and it’s important that when we are putting the situations that make us question our entire concept of luck, that we take action. There is grief and death support available in abundance but when people experience any form of setback, one of the most important things we should do is to take action, because this moves us away from the idea of even considering the notion of luck.
Believe That You Are in Control of Your Life
If you ask yourself “why do I have such bad luck?” you are not in possession of what they call a growth mindset. You have to believe you are in control of your destiny. This means you’ve got to believe that change is possible, but also take responsibility for your life. When we take responsibility, we are being accountable for what happens to us. There are people who experience setback after setback, and they believe problems are opportunities. When bad things happen, the best thing to do is ask yourself “what is the lesson?” When you start to change your perspective and see obstacles as opportunities, this is important because it will help you reframe the idea of bad luck.
Face Your Fears
If you feel that you are being bombarded with bad luck, you’ve got to commit to overcoming your fears. What is it that you are afraid of? Having fears isn’t due to having bad luck, fears are the cause of bad luck. When you start to address what the sources are of your biggest fears, you will start to make changes in your life. It will help you to create meaning, and it will make you think that the idea of luck is something that you create yourself.
Learn to Be Grateful
Gratitude is so important because it’s another reframing device. Gratitude cannot exist with negative emotions because you are looking at the positive of anything negative. Learning how to practice gratitude is important, and when you start to become happier by realizing what you are grateful for, you won’t spend your time wondering why you have bad luck. Your life is what you make it, but also, you make your own luck. Things happen to us, but it’s how we respond to them that will dictate the course of our lives, and this is one of the many lessons we learn as we become more in tune with ourselves.
