Being at a good level of health will mean something different to us all. What is health to you and your family, might not be to another. But, there is one thing that we can all agree on, and that’s sometimes we all need to make sure that we’re on top of our health checks and physically (or mentally) running right.

 

When you focus on the set areas of your health that will always need the most attention, you’re doing your bit to consciously lead a healthy life. You’ll often find that you’re promoting and sharing the idea of having good health with your children too because you’re leading by example. If you want to do your bit to improve your health and ensuring that you’re on top form at all times, here are the ten areas of health that you should never neglect.

 

Muscular

 

First up, you’re going to want to make sure that your muscles are always in good shape. Even if you’ve had a healthy youth, if you don’t use your body, it will become useless – especially as you age. So, if you want to ensure that your muscles don’t waste away, or that you get rid of the idea of having aches and pains as you age, you’re going to want to make sure your muscles always stay healthy.

 

Teeth

 

We all know that we should be staying on top of our oral health, but it’s easier said than one. Knowing that you need to have an appointment every six months doesn’t mean that you always do it. The best way to stay on top of it, or at least try to exert some form of control, is to ensure that you don’t smoke or drink to excess. Your eyes do a lot of work, so it’s important that you’re prepared to keep them in good shape. We often have a range of eye tests during our educational years, to then assume that we’re good to go for the rest of our lives, but that’s simply not true. Fitness

 

In our youth, fitness is something that we take for granted – even if we don’t mean to. But just like caring for your muscles, you should do the same with your fitness levels. As they say – use it or lose it. You’re only ever as fit as you choose to be. So, do your best to leave an active lifestyle, and you’ll be sure to keep a good level of fitness into your old age.

 

Stress

 

Stress is something that will affect us all at some point or another in life. Some of us are better at dealing with it than others, but that doesn’t mean that you have to deal with it. In fact, it’s important to you health for you to be able to stay as stress-free as possible, or at least know how to minimize any stress that does come your way – for your sanity, if not your heart. So, start working in ways to destress into your day – your health is counting on it.

 

Ears

 

Just like your teeth and eyes, you need to make sure that you’re not neglecting your ears. You need to make sure that you take care of your hearing to know when you need help. Although our hearing may naturally deteriorate as we age, there are things you can do to keep your hearing as healthy as possible. Let’s play ball!

 

When you are trying to motivate kids to exercise, it best to stay away from the more traditional activities such as running around the block. For one these aren’t always appropriate for the little ones, and they can seem a little intimidating as well.

 

Instead, the focus should really be on fun, with the activity just being part of that. This is the way to establish a positive connection between getting them to move around more and having a good time.

 

One of the easiest ways to do this is to set up some competitive ball games within your own household or neighborhood. Things like basketball, baseball or football are a great way of getting the kids up and about. Also, they get so into the competition element, that they will forget all about how many times they have run up and down the court, pitch or field.

Another easy way of getting the whole family doing some exercise it to organize cycling trips out. These can be over a shorter distance to somewhere in your local area, such as a park. Or you can strap the bikes to the back of the SUV and head on into the country for some longer routes.

 

The combination of seeing new scenery and getting there under their own steam is very appealing to a lot of people. It also helps to change the focus from the physical activity to the fun they can get out of it instead.

 

Trampolining

 

Now, why doesn’t like trampolining? This is a brilliant physically activity as it uses up calories, but also allows the whole family to work on their balance and coordination as well.

Trampolining is so much fun that many people already have them in their own back yards as toys. But you can make them into a more thorough but fun workout by setting specific challenge like forward, or backwards rolls. Or you can even visit trampoline centers where there are a lot of different ones to play on.

 

Dancing

 

Something else that is a wonderful activity that will make everyone forget about how hard they are actually working is dance. Dancing can be done by any type of person and any age.

 

You can dance at home if you like, or at parties or even in a club. You can even try a Zumba dance class in the gym if you like. These can work especially well for families, as there are child level ones available, as well as one for the grown ups.

 

Or if they aren’t quite ready for a class yet, there are plenty of kids TV shows that includes a dancing segment as well. These will get the little ones up and exercising, while having the time of their lives.

 

Active Antics: Keeping The Kids Fit This Summer

There is a severe lack of physical education in schools across the country and because of this, there has been a rise in extra-curricular activities for kids. These activities are not always free, so for families on a budget trying to keep the kids burning energy through the year turns into a challenge. Active kids make for happy kids and their health is dependent on a good balance of healthy, hearty food and exercise. There’s nothing that changes your life as much as having a baby, and you might feel that you’ve lost yourself a little. Here are some tips on how to feel like yourself again…

As much as you’ve always loved fashion, it’s time to change it up a little now that you have a baby. It’s a good idea to go for dark colours in case of stains – make sure that you have a couple of pairs of comfortable jeans that you can throw on with anything. Leave off the jewellery until your baby’s old enough not to grab at it, and go for a waterproof coat with a good hood that covers your head so you can stay warm and dry when you’re pushing the stroller in the rain with no umbrella.

 

Get Fit Again

After having a baby you might be a little heavier than you were before. Although you shouldn’t feel in too much of a rush to lose the weight – your body did something incredible! – you might want to get back to normal and into your old clothes. Be careful with ab workouts as your core muscles will be weak. Start up with some walking, running, swimming and a post-natal yoga class – and make sure that you get plenty of fresh air. Get Dressed Every Day

It sounds simple but you need to try to get dressed every day. Even if you’re exhausted and tempted to wear pajama pants every day for the rest of your life, make the effort, even if you’re only pulling on some yoga pants and sneakers to run to the grocery store. A slick of mascara will do wonders for your confidence and make you feel as if you’ve got it together. Try to leave the house every day, even though it might seem like a lot to organise. It’s important to socialise and to talk to other adults, and not just your baby who, although delightful, probably isn’t the best conversationalist.

You might not want a mom bob, but if you have hair that requires a lot of upkeep, now might be the time to change it. Talk to your stylist about what might look good with minimal effort so you don’t have to spend too long on doing your hair every morning. Go for layers and make sure that it’s long enough to tie or clip back from your face.

Get Time For Yourself

In order to stay sane, you need to take time for yourself. Talk to your partner and family and arrange time that you can go out to hang out with your friends without the baby, go to a fitness class, or even just go to a coffee shop and read your book with a cappuccino and croissant in blissful silence. You may be a mother but underneath you’re still the same person and you’ll regret it if you give up too many of the things you love for your child. Take time out for yourself and you’ll be a more present and involved mother when you’re home again.

Your diet is one of the leading things that can cause you to become overweight. If you, or your children, are gorging on junk food each day. Not getting a good intake of fruit and vegetables, then you aren’t doing yourself any favours.

One of the first ways we introduce young children to food is through weaning. At the time, your child doesn’t know that they dislike anything green. They are curious to the new textures and tastes that they are about to experience. But, many parents don’t take advantage of this. The thing is, a child has to try something at least eight times before they can make a conscious decision of whether they like something. Especially at this age. If they spit it out once many parents assume they don’t like it and never offer again. But the chances are the next time they will eat it. The issue is we set a lot of the habits from this age. Most children will try something new or eat their meal if they are surrounded by others doing the same thing. Plus it is a great opportunity to spend some quality time together bonding. Eating a meal as a family is something families don’t do enough of. But it’s a great time to reconnect with one another.

Try and not make a drama out of food or meal times

Finally, when it comes to food and trying new things try and not make a drama out of mealtimes. Easier said than done when your young child is refusing to eat a lovingly prepared meal. Just accept that there will be good days of eating and bad days. But being consistent with healthy options is key for good habits to be developed in the future.

Getting active

Being active is another thing young children today don’t do. Smartphones and games consoles are far more appealing. Too many times you will hear about children residing in their bedrooms playing video games non stop. While technology is great and it’s important to encourage healthy use of it, it is also vital to ensure that children remain active. This means getting outdoors and burning off energy the old fashioned way.

Have active family days out

Again sometimes the best offence is to do things as a family. So enjoy active days out by going on a hike, heading for a walk in the local woods, or just playing with a ball at the local park. Sometimes the chance of spending quality time together is enough to entice a child from their beloved tablet. To do something fun and active for a change. On the more serious side a good level of fitness is vital for good health in the future.

Encourage extracurricular activities

Another great way to encourage a more active lifestyle is to enrol your children in some after school clubs. Or extracurricular activities on the weekend. You will find that there is literally a class for anything, so you are bound to find something your child will take an interest in. From gymnastics for preschoolers to soccer and baseball practice there is something for everyone. Many times your school will offer such clubs. But researching online will often unearth some great local clubs. It’s also another fantastic opportunity for your children to socialise with other children. Allowing them to make some friends outside of the school environment.

Listen to what your child is interested in

Finally, it might be hard to stray away from the dream you have for your child but you need to ensure you listen to them. You may want them to be the next tennis star or football hero, but they may have other ideas. The last thing you want to do is force a more active lifestyle on your child. This could cause rebellion in the future. So make sure you listen to the things they will like to try and ensure you encourage that wholeheartedly.

Drinking plenty of water

The last thing to consider is the amount of water your child drinks. We can be too easily strayed towards cordial drinks or sugary alternatives, but in the long term these are no good for young children.

Avoid sugary drinks

Try and ensure you stay away from the sugary drinks alternative or diluting water with flavours. This develops a taste to your child that will be difficult to break away from as they get older. Especially as most schools offer just milk and water as drink options now.

Added benefits

There are some great added benefits to drinking water. Not only could it improve the mood of your child but it could also help them sleep at night and increase their energy levels. In a good way. Water is a great detox, even for children, so try and encourage a decent water intake from an early age.
